You are a wonderful teacher. I'm 84. When a negative thought hits...I stop and compel myself to do 10 mental "pushups" to offset the thought. Example: name 10 of your favorite songs, name 10 countries you've visited,name 10 friends you had in grade school. And by the time I hit ten...I've forgotten the poison thought. NEVER too old to learn!

Thank you so much , Mel . I am in my 60's , and through the majority of my life I've been known for my great attitude . I was also an athlete. After a series of negative things my body has been through, my attitude changed. I worked very hard to ' repair ' my body . Your comment about "mental pushups" just made me realize I hadn't "repaired" my broken spirit/mind . Please know by taking the time to share your technique, you literally saved someone . Now just as I do my physical exercise, I will add your suggestions , as well . God Bless You !

Realizing that I am not my thoughts - that I don't need to listen to them, to act on them, that I can simply observe them - is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. Previously, I allowed my mind to keep me miserable, worried, angry - every single day. After practicing Eckhart's teachings I now only feel that way sometimes, and even then, I have a way out. I now realize that I create my own suffering. And that I can stop doing this any time I choose. I can accept this very moment as it is. Dwelling on the past leads to so much regret and resentment. Thinking about future leads to so much fear, worry and anxiety. When I live in the Now, everything is OK. And Now IS everything.

@zaoria123
@zaoria123 4 ай бұрын
@@ElenaRata-iv5pk I have found that whenever obsessive thinking arises, it is important for me to switch to the perspective of the watcher. That way, I can simply observe the thoughts and they don't have to affect me. This is hard, of course, but the alternative is a great deal of suffering, as I am sure you know. Also, I think it is essential to develop this ability when things are good. That way, when things are difficult, I am better equipped to resist the tempation to participate in or buy into my obesssive thinking.

Yeah, we can't stop thought. Some call it the 'inner voice', 'inner monologue'. I've just found out there are people who don't have an inner voice or an image in the brain. It's a condition called Aphantasia. I believe that J Krishnamurti may well have had it. I've watched aphantasiacs on KZbin, it's amazing to hear them explain how their mind works.
@ivceballos

This is not a good approach. By not giving attention to your inner voice, you are not able to know what’s going on. Why you react to things the way you do? In what ways your biased point of view affect those around you? Specially your loved ones. It’s best to approach this voice with wonder and curiosity. See what you learn and grow from it.

I too am an overthinker due to a cruel childhood. Mine only strikes when I have a disagreement with my partner if she pushes me away for her own space, rejection. I keep myself busy and I'm building in my hobbies and getting out in nature and finding my own place in this world at 54. Every time I hear that voice I tell it to shut up, I visualise it and I get a spade fill it with soil and bury it, I muffle it and find something positive to do with my time, walking my dog, the gym or simply creating something with my hands. But seeing that voice as a foreign invader and burying it, focusing on the earth I bury it with and listen to the muffled sounds as the voice becomes choked and eventually buried until I can no longer hear it, then I smile and go about my day. Your not alone.

It works because it's distraction. It isn't healthy in the long run, though. You're choosing to focus on something that is more pleasant than your negative thoughts, and since the conscious mind more or less runs on a single thread, you're feeling fine for the time being. However, suppressed or repressed thoughts have a way of integrating into your subconscious, where they become much more permanent and difficult to deal with. Healthy distraction in small portions is fine as symptomatic treatment. That is what single-pointed meditation is: a conscious choice to dedicate all your attention to a single point of interest - your breath, your fingertips, your sensations - so that it rids your conscious mind of the capacity to focus on anything else, including the negative thoughts. Contrast that with analytical meditation, which is a holistic mindfulness of the here and now, offering an opportunity to treat the real problem. The Dalai Lama talks about the difference between these two forms of meditation.

@@regulareverydayhalfbirdguy You've hit on something I've often wondered about. At first glance, it would seem that replacing negative thoughts with positive ones is good. Dear friend, I have very strong feelings and memories about my childhoods perception, at that time I was true natural. And I remember how it was terrible, when a thinking mind of adults took away the naturalness of my being, as their thoughts and behavior shackled me in chains. And that entry into me of the thinking mind was accompanied by nightmares and horrors. Therefore, right now you are witnessing how your born magical divine child is turning into a rationally thinking being roughly shackled by adults.

WOW (Words of Wisdom). "The mind cannot differentiate between reality and a thought". Most of the time all of us are going through life reacting to the thought rather than reacting to the reality of the situation. I understand this on a fundamental level and yet remain "hypnotized" by the never ending cavalcade of thoughts. And yes, the mind loves to slurp up negative thoughts because they are so much more "juicier" than positive thoughts.

I just started trying transcendental meditation, it's helping a lot. I'm a serious over-thinker. I just researched it, made up a 3 syllable simple word that has no meaning, and started for 20 minutes right when I wake in the morning. I sit comfortably in bed, breath in without thinking about how I'm doing it, very quietly say the word slowly as I release the air. It works! I can go longer than 20 minutes now, with no thought, and it's wonderful! I'm about to start doing it in the evenings as well. It's really calming, I need that!

This is a huge thing to realize. It explains a lot in our culture--the nervous system doesn't always know what's real and what's not. That's why horror films and violence are so bad for children to watch. They program the nervous system with trauma that's not even real! No wonder most people are crazy. My mother wouldn't let me watch stuff like that when I was a kid.

The reason that it is easier to focus on negativity isn't because we are predisposed, precisely, inasmuch as the brain and ego is combing thru the details to figure out how to avoid the direct and associated pain of what happened. And because we have primal, generational patterns that are traumatic, we stay in victim/survival spiral. The brain recognizes patterns. When we change the "algorithm" of our lives, we change our 'vibration' and align ultimately with the vibration we prefer. It's challenging tho! And consciousness is very key to stop that primal brain cycle of fight/flight (victim/survival mode) and change the patterns. Thank you for your perspective on this, Eckart. I am grateful for you.

The past just consists of memories, the future only consists of expectations. Live in the present. The rest are just thoughts. Every time you struggle at night, think of this comment. I care, you are loved, you can move past it. You are awesome.

Going through the pandemic was so much easier for me thanks to Tolle's teaching. I don't fully grasp the spiritual aspect of "awareness and being" but switching my focus into the present moment has helped me a lot!

There's not much to grasp or understand, just simply (although by all means not alway easy :P) what you already said: be here, now.

Many are harder on themselves than anyone else could ever be. A lifetime of "doing everything wrong" and being constantly downgraded develops the negative voice. "It" deserves an award! 😑 Thank the Lord your video came at the exact perfect time. ✌️🌴♥️

Unbelievable depression at the moment non exist problems comparing myself to others led me to a downward spiral destructive. Mindfulness is the key. Hopefully I will come out better.

Mr Echardt Tolle. You have grown to be such an important Teacher and Friend. Through all of this. From you, there is clarity, insights, and direction. I appreciate, and have appreciated it a long time. It layered in for understanding, gradually. And i also appreciate you releasing these teachings and past recordings of your teachings at the right time. Almost like you guage the need of the hour. So Thank You So Much. Love.

Voice in our head is the self created suffering by the mind. Learn to listen to silence. Life speaks in silence.

I wish the incredible person reading this all the best in life; don't over-blame yourself, accept things, and move forward; don't let others define "success" for you; get up, learn the skills you need, and get after it; the keys to a happy life are in your hands.

Thank you to the spirit we call Eckhart Tolle. He has taught me so much and made me understand how much my ego and pain body are not me, and how being present or mindful can dissolve both.

“Indulging” in negative thinking. 100% correct, such an appropriate word. We decide to participate in it when in fact we can choose not to and to observe.
