I bought a JUNO 106 back in 1984 for $600.00 and a MSQ MIDI Digital Keyboard recorder for $400.00 later I bought a YAMAHA RX7 drum machine and a YMC10 tape to MIDI sync. It was the first time I used MIDI. It was amazing to sync the drum to the synth and sync record to tape. This was the beginning of Electronic Music. A few years later I bought a Tandy 1000 TL2 and a MIDI Maestro Kit which was an 8-bit card and a piece of software that recorded MIDI information and played it back. I don't remember how many tracks maybe 16 in line with the MIDI channels. Anyway, it had a piano keyboard display like an old piano roll. This displayed the notes and info as it scrolled by. Thanks for the video as always. It brings back fond memories of years ago.

One of my go-to synths. Sure it's limited, but it's a mini-synth. The small size and battery operation allows me to gab it, throw some headphones on and just explore. What it lacks in polyphony i make up for with other synths, bringing in additional textual layers.

The synth they used in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was actually an ARP 2500 and the guy that plays it in the movie is Phil Dodds, ARP's VP of engineering.

I'm VERY fortunate to have found an old Juno 106 years ago for a bargain price. I did pick up a JX-03 a few years back for the sounds. I can always double-track for more voices, but these little boutiques are a good way to pick up some classic sounds without doing everything in the box.

Same. I was a teenager in the early-mid 2000s. I thought old synths were cool. I was just buying them up for cheap because they were still sort of unwanted then. I ended up with a pile of them. Personally, I think they're way overvalued today. And yes they sound badass, but they're big, old, heavy, temperamental, etc. I like that one comment where someone said the JX-03 sounded "factory fresh". There is so much new stuff out there that also sounds awesome, even Komplete software.

After looking at the JU-06A and the offerings from Behringer, I eventually went with an actual Juno-6. After using TAL U-NO-LX-V2 for years, I can say that it is a better emulation than these newer hardware emulations while also taking up no physical space. Still, it is only 95% of the way there and Juno nerds can pick out the small acoustic differences easily. That being said, it is of course not a hardware synth and cannot inspire that level of creativity that one gets when fiddling with real knobs. For prospecting buyers, here is my advice: If you want the closest emulation you can get of a real Juno, TAL-U-NO-LX-V2 is something you should look at. If you want a hardware synthesizer with Juno vibes and doesn't totally break the bank, the Deepmind-6 is probably where it's at. However, if you want the true authentic Juno sound, there is still nothing out there that I know of that can accomplish that. Depending on the features and sound you want, a Juno-6 or 106 are where it's at. The Juno-60 sits in between those but at over twice the price.

I mostly agree, but think the System-8 is a damn good option as well. At least you get 8 voices there. It's also a great synth in its own right. But ultimately, I'm with you. Nothing would suffice until I bought an actual JUNO-6 last year.
@schmapps12 жыл бұрын
Personally, I feel like the ACB Juno emulation is right up there with Tal - they are both very accurate. The one thing I will say in the JU-06A's favor though, is just the quick hands on control with the sliders. Yeah, I know you can map midi knobs to the Tal software...but it just ain't the same. At least not in terms of feeling like a "hands on" synth. IMO

The Ju-06s it´s a beauty. Unfortunately the polyphony is only 4 notes, but otherwise it sounds absolutely amazing and it's super easy and fun to program, from beefy bases to smooth synthwave style pads.Roland´s ACB sounds truly amazing and I use this little one all the time. After seeing this review, I went and spite bought a JU-06a!!! On a serious note, I love the sound of these things; they really are in the ballpark of the original 106's. (I've never owned a real Juno 106). What I'm finding is the 4 note polyphony actually has me thinking outside the box and finding different ways to voice and phrase chords; this limitation is actually having a positive effect on my playing. Lastly though, I might break down and buy a second unit in the near future for 8 voice polyphony.

This seems like an instrument where its simplicity is potentially its greatest strength. It invites one to be a keyboardist/performer creating new soundscapes with a narrow pallet of sounds that work really well in any genre/band -- molding the sounds in real time; at will. Modern sound designers might look down on it as too simple, but that would miss the point entirely. It might be one of the stratocasters for a keyboardist -- the musician makes it their own (especially with a pedal philosophy as an added dimension). As you stated: it's interface forces you to get personal with it very quickly (paraphrased). Because of the direction that my imagination is taking this piece of gear, I would have three preferences: 1.) Hardware. (unless your MIDI controller can comfortably map the same vibe -- which mine cannot). 2.) A bigger keyboard (at least a couple more octaves). 3.) 6 voice (minimum) polyphony would be a deal breaker for me. Bonus.) Maybe a keytar-controller if you are in a band and want to stand & perform to the audience. I'm imagining a guitarist and a Juno-user dueling like sonic-Jedi already. I probably don't get out much, as I'm certain this already exists. I don't think of it as a perfect synth (might not exist), but it seems very useful in the right hands. I could see a black-belt user almost not needing presets -- only having them as quick button presses for live acts. A black belt user would have those patches as recipes tabooed on the metaphorical back of their hands.

I owned and loved an MKS7 for a good few years, so I got used to limited tweakability and chunky sounds, but I'm much happier with a DAW, the Cherry Audio DCO106 vst, and the automation, stacking, and unlimited polyphony that provides. My retro-futuristic coffee table/melted beercrate is only big enough for two nanosynth modules, and the Roland boutiques don't offer enough va-va-voom or polphony to displace the TI Snow and Plugiator on that valuable hipsteroid real estate. The fanboys will love it regardless of its limitations because it provides a faint whiff of a bygone age, but I can't justify the voice limitations or the menu faff when I just want to create music.
@mrz802 жыл бұрын
Buying DCO-106 was probably the second greatest money-for-music-stuff purchase I've ever made (after my main electric 6string). I was never in a position to cost-justify a Juno, and now I don't have to. :D Pair that with Eight Voice, and you can just about rule the galaxy. :D

@@AudioPilz Bang per buck, Cherry do amazing virtual things with antique analogue synth recreations. Occasionally, in a blind test, you can tell what's Cherry virtual and what's original rust, but usually it's because the old synth has wonky old components that are getting ready to fail. If you use musical instruments to write and release music, it's much easier if they aren't at the repair shop.
@alexwest9092 жыл бұрын
I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it was at least a 6 voice; A pad machine with only 4 voices doesn't make sense. Deepmind does a good enough "emulation" for me and the 12 voice gives crazy nice trailing pads. Even a crippled 4-voice Juno boutique sounds amazing. Because that Juno sound. Mmm-mmm.

It seems like everytime I'm eyeing a synth you make a video about it. Because of this, I'm gonna get really into the Mellotron M4000D Micro and see what happens.

I had a 106 back in the early 90's, one of my favourite synths ever - think I only paid £200 for it. Wouldn't touch any of the boutiques with a bargepole.

Could it really have costed that much more chip wise to give us 6+ voices? It's digital and released in 2019, the future, come on.

Your memes are very clever - we have to pause which increases your view times. Well played. ....on the Juno 60.

Thank you for another, most entertaining and fun review on KZbin! :) JU sounds great and looks super sexy. As a fetishist, I was considering purchasing it, but as you said, I'm concerned about connectivity. 1. For some reason, "Roland being Roland" uses (in all?) Boutiques a micro USB port, which in my experience is the most susceptible to mechanical damage. I understand that installing a USB Type B might be difficult in this size factor (although they managed to do it in Tr-6S, so I don't see any strong arguments against it). Even if so, I would prefer a USB C or oldschool mini USB any day! 2. Using more than one Roland device inside a DAW is a pain because they connect as an audio interface. You can somehow get around this by creating your own virtual interface-combo, but it somewhat missed opportunity to create a device that would be a smooth bridge between the digital work environment and tactility. So I'm more and more inclined to use a regular VST, which for a person who doesn't perform live will be more straightforward from a productivity perspective. However, my own practicality makes me sad, and doesn't fit your wonderful channel. :) Thanks!

Awesome video, as always! I must say i've tried my JU-06A as part of my live set and it performed quite alright, especially the sequencer (believe it or not). Besides, it's a great tool to take out on a trip and make sounds on the fly with (in case you can't / don't feel like carrying a laptop).

I’ve watched every one of your videos sir, and you are a top five YT channel for me sir. Genius. Korg Microstation has so much potential, yet is so hard to use. Has anyone recommended Korg Microstation yet? It made me think I was stupid. Korg Microstation made me hatred. There has to be a whole subculture with pausing your videos. So many great synth-memes. You are a blessing sir.

Please do a video on the Avalon 737. It is a huge staple in hip hop community. Yet hated on left and right, for having such a slow compressor.

One of my clients has that as her 2nd favorite channel strip or preamp, behind the ultra rare Giltronics 356AT. Pretty much always has the compressor circuit engaged for gain stage coloration but with settings to keep it from doing any traditional compression.

Surprised this wasn't done way earlier. I do love mine as an affordable way to own the Juno sound (no way am I thirsty enough to get an original), and you get both Juno's too, which is a bonus. Can't remember if there's any note-stealing on long-release sounds (because of the 4 voices).

Juno 60 was my first analog synth. It's long gone, and I don't miss it-I liked my JX3P better for what I was doing. My friend got one of these recently. I tried it. Sounds pretty good, but those little sliders are a joke. You can't be very subtle with those tiny things. I'm not a fan, but I'll play it when I'm over at his jam space and try not to talk shit about it...too much. It's a toy.
