Hmzzz, I hope AudioPilz has experience in running from angry lynch mobs, but of course, it could be worse. He could also grab a 3K and designate that bad gear 😂. But samplers of all kinds have convoluted workflows, especially if they wanna be an "eierlegendewolmilchsau" as the new generation of MPCs so desperately wants to be. Personally, I don't bother with them too much. If it's a DIAB, my box is a 12 Gb laptop soon to be replaced by 64 Gb machine. Run the software, add a silver Studio controller, and go F them all. Still convoluted but with more options to fiddle with (in my case, including the Cremona Quartet). And as an ICT drop-out, I've spent enough time behind a screen not to be bothered by them at all. Unless they are touchscreens, then I hate them with a passion.

Also more or less true of using an ancient DAW on an ancient OS. A DOS box with Cakewalk, an Atari with KCS Omega, an OS 9 Mac with Studio Vision Pro. Software can finally be be reliable once it's "dead" and you never update it again, and you are free to bask in that sweet workflow. Obsolete systems can be productive as they have loads of abandonware and none of the distraction.

If you're going to do a bunch of work in the box, I recommend a touchscreen stylus. Makes life a lot easier. The "MPC Software" DAW also offers fantastic integration with hardware MPCs, you can use the on board controls pretty much seamlessly to work on the same project files on a large screen with mouse and keyboard, with some other added benefits like full VST support and more audio tracks. I have the Live 2 and I love it. It has replaced practically all of my other gear.

Good overview. Things that are cool that weren't mentioned: the lack of IO can be addressed with an external mixer or interface off the USB Port. For live performances, I plug it into my X-18, and can use all the 18 channels as ins or outs over USB. Haven't touched the built in audio IO in years. Thing that I don't like about the unit: all the things you would need for live performances are spread across all different menus/ pads! Track mutes, sample mutes, sequence changes, ect, all have to be their own seperate section. So if you want to mute something to go into a new sequence, you've got to jump between a bunch of different menus in a very short amount of titime.

Okay, I'm a bit surprised you did the MPC family, but hey - nothing wrong about what you said in the video, I totally agree with you. I have the MPC Key 61 which I use as my controll-all-be-all master magician of my entire studio (it has twice the memory), but I don't use it much for sampling, but I love the MPC's excellent midi-recorder and the fact that the USB midi can recognize the most obscure midi device that not even Windows would be able to love or find... I tested the Casio CT-S1000v I mentioned to you last week as a prime candidate for "Bad Gear" on Windows and it would not have it - but ... MPC just loved it and I could send Midi SysEx to hack the unit into features I thought only was possible in an alternate universe - so yeah, that lil thing is crazy powerful, you might want one, it's a swiss-army-knife of a midi studio and all synths-that-be.

I was trying to use it mainly to sequence hardware Synths, and running their audio back through its internal FX. In the end I sold mine and went back to my trusty MC-909, which is very limited but actually has a wonderful workflow. Weekeenndddddd!! As usual, I enjoyed the video. Using USB and a USB hub, the MPC One is quite the studio center piece. I'm using mine with 6 synths/drummachines that provide Midi over USB. @@AudioPilz Yip, was about to post the above. Ext. audio interface and USB hub adds a lot. Agree it's a mixed bag; clunky ui; steep learning curve; not enough storage; should stream audio; only 4 Q-links can be annoying, because UI is inconsistent with how they're setup; doesn't play nicely as a MIDI slave, should be called MPC Dom. But there's more I like than dislike. For all it's annoyances, it's still a bargain, because it's very good for a number of uses: drum pads, performance, hardware stereo sampler with many voices, (unlike Digitakt, which I ditched for it!) nifty auto-sampler, hardware sequencer with good feel; plugins like OP-X are good; master clock and usb host for whole studio; cv/gate interface for small eurorack; supports class compliant audio audio interface. Useful as digital mixer. The mistake Akai make is pitching it like it's great for everything and paying no attention to UI/UX quality. When, it's only good at some of those things (sampler, sequencer, hub, sketchpad), and not so good at others (file management, recording, detailed arrangement, full plugin-track host, final fx/mixing, mastering).

I gotta say, this little gadget is my jam! I'm out there rockin' stages as a touring guitarist for a bunch of talented folks, and I've got my MPC One right by my side, layin' down those sweet loops and FX sends. It's seriously mind-blowing! And you know what's a real hoot? Tinkering with this compact wonder on a train or a flight, makin' music in the weirdest places - it's like a musical adventure, I tell ya. But, here's the kicker: I wish it had a couple of things - a kick-butt reverb and some MIDI effects and sequencers. I'm scratching my head, wondering why they haven't added those yet. I mean, come on! As a fellow analog synth enthusiast, this thing would be the crown jewel of my studio if it had those MIDI FX and sequencers for separate channels, not just the old MIDI roll.

I used to have MPC One, but sold it because the workflow was a bit overwhelming and I didn't really have the time to learn all of the available features. Great gear, perhaps, not for everyone.

Really enjoyed the Hardware house :) I kinda liked the MPC Live with sw 2.3 at the time, later they added so much stuff, it became too bloated, laggy a also more buggy. But I have to acknowledge that the MPC One is probably the best all in one box a new producer can buy. It does everything and it's easy to finish things later in a daw. May the (akai) Force be with you...maybe next time :)

This is my baby. I got it just for the sampling but got drawn in by the power but in the end yes - in the end it doesn't replace a DAW. But I still love it for playing about and coming up with stuff without distractions of other things. You can get rid of that laptop whining for a start.

Had the MPC One for two years and was very productive on it, loved the daw in a box approach but eventually outgrew it and missed actually good reverbs and things like a proper wavetable synth. Now my eyes are set on the Push 3 instead. Just need to donate a kidney. 🙈

I went from ableton to the Korg Electribe Sampler 2, at the time it was purely to phase out DAW and CPU as much as possible (I was working IT and wanted to not feel like on the job while making music) The problem with the Korgs ES2 is that all my loops were very stiff and I have a very hard time to alter them in order to go for a full song. I did some songs, but looking back, they're not bad, but not great either. I ran into a second hand MPC Live for 350€, and bought it. It took me a couple weeks of fiddling around to find my way through it and develop a proper workflow, learning the ropes of the MPC behaviour, finding the limitations of the machine and then build inside this frame. And maaaaaaan, this is the best piece of gear I have. The pads are awesome and allows me to make those hihats rolls by hands, with all the subtle variations that comes when playing them live. I bought it in august, roughly three months ago and once I got the hang of it, I am making music on a daily basis, made 6 Progressive trance tracks with several others in the pipeline, experiments and so on. I understand people like to fight over their habits and gear, but the MPC Live is what I needed and I would recommend it every single time. Until now, I was always forced back to a CPU with a DAW to do most of the workload, fiddling around trying to fit sequences from the DAW to the KORG ES2, which was a PITA. Again, with the MPC I am making music daily with a great workflow. I haven't published any music so far but you can check snippets of what I made on my TikTok: Highway_Druid Best regards and thanks for the Bad Gear reviews! Always on point and fun to watch!

Probably because of the nature of the linux distro+he combo itself. Should be like those android phones you can move whatsapp updates to sd card… let’s hope the coding from the Force could be make compatible and someday add that must have festure.

@@dubbylabby6068 the Force OS (really GUI, since base OS is Linux as we all know) was forked from the MPC.. so really there is no excuse for such a fundamental feature not being on both Honestly I think it'd be cool if MPC+APC MIDI controller would enable Force functionality.. and Force+MPC controller would unlock MPC functionality

Sup buddy. I love my mpc. Granted it took a lil bit of figuring out on how to make it........useful. but now I find it amazing as an add on for a 3 or 4 piece turntable setup. Adding arps and baselines using midi sync while performing has been quite useful. I run this amd the minibrute to a mackie mixer, then to a gemini Bluetooth/ wired mixer. Amazing for recording samples straight from phone (mpc 1 isn't bluetooth but adding Bluetooth mixer for 100 bucks) made it worthwhile. I'd say the mpc one isn't beginner friendly but if your willing to learn can be a very amazing add on. I've also paired with a boss505mk2. Very expanding at that point but then your well over a grand.

I bought the black MPC Live2. Had to return it due to covid. I needed the money cos I couldn't do gigs. Then I bought the retro version. Sold it as it didn't match my needs. Then I bought the gold version when I started doing modular. I'm never selling it and I even bought an MPC one to control my regular hardware synths. It's a beautiful device. But does have a few quirks.

The current line of MPCs had a lot of growing pains. They're powerful machines, but it took a while before they developed the feel and workflow of the classics. I bought an MPC X when they came out, and coming from an MPC1000 and MPC5000, I freaking hated it. It took a lot of years of updates for them to be more usable, and now that they're better machines, I've got an MPC Key 61 and an MPC One Plus.
