Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the cre8audio West Pest. Is this affordable semi modular analog synthesizer and hommage to Don Buchla 's West Coast synthesis The Pest? Can it keep up with competitors like the Korg Volca Modular, is it worth it without adding even more Eurorack modules and can it create the strange sounds of the antithesis to Bob Moog 's East Coast synthesis? Should I get the cre8audio East Beast instead?
Thanks to Klangfarbe for letting lending me one of their floor models:

The West Pest is my most used piece of gear: I've had one since December 2022, and probably play it every day, if not every other day. There's some pretty unique sounds you can get using feedback patching, and especially by adding a couple externals you can get really carried away. The Dynamic Gate and the Wavefolder alone make the pest worth it. I would concur with the general sentiment that for some applications the sound can be awfully "clicky" which isnt always ideal

You can get rid of the percussive click by patching in an east coast style ADSR with a slowish attack - I use one of the envelopes on my Neutron for this. Obviously the clicky-ness is a major part of the instrument’s character, but it’s nice to have options :)

@@lolatu4402 the multi press functions are... annoying. But fortunately I find a lot of it is set and forget, so you don't spend too much time fiddling with it. I don't think the criticisms here are taking account the biggest selling point of this thing... Its Price. For $250 you get the equivalent of what would be nearly $1000 in separate euro rack modules (Oscillator, Wave folder, Low Pass Gate, Sequencer, Midi to cv converter). On it's own it's not the most robust thing but alongside other gear or as a starter piece for your modular set up it's an incredible deal.

Your work is intoxicating, as usual: a mind-bogglingly entertaining drive-by of yet another questionable for-quick-profit musical appliance. I was so happy as soon as I sent mine back; my suspicions that it wasn't me were verified when I realized that looking at the empty spot where it had been was way better than seeing it sitting there ever was. Your excellent as-always review (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) was a great reminder of how aggro & plonky it sounded no matter what knob- & button-wrangling moves I tried. Way more fun to curl up with my two darling little twin volca modulars & easily call up impossibly alien gamelanic sound tapestries seemingly emerging from the swirling mists of timelessness.

I had the West Pest for a while. Fun little box, but my Eurorack already could do 99% of its features. Aaand something happened for which I needed the money elsewhere, so it went back to the retailer... And if i visit Vienna, I really have to pay Klangfarbe a visit, just for keeping your show going. :D

You've finally gotten to a piece of gear I own! This was my first "real" synth and also my gateway to Eurorack (much to the chagrin of my wallet.) I do agree with the bit on the hate-wall about the outputs being weirdly low and I just take a "push the button till I like it" approach to the more arcane functions hidden in the UI. Love it otherwise.

its one of couple of midi controllable west coast style synths , also cheapest gateway to Low pass gate (LPG) Buchla Bongos. you can use it to process external audio too .. with that LPG . which is quite the premium of a feature !! it has very nice analog rich sound , which is way too loud for your usual line level mix presets.. it has more possibilities when combined with other modular or semi modular gear.

This thing has a lot of value and isn't bad gear at all. A lot of people have one of the cheap Behringer synths at this point and adding a patchable wavefolder, lfo that goes from 40 seconds well into audio rate, switching waveform VCO, extra random source, basic sequencer, LPG style VCA, and random clock source would be considerably more expensive if you added individual modules. It's arguably worth the price for the wavefolder and VCO alone. Saying there is no way to clock the sequencer other than tap tempo and external is sort of incorrect because there is an lfo sitting right there that can be your sequencer clock. I agree the 4 bit display is borderline impossible to remember in it's entirety but I just rotate through them and listen until the setting sounds good. Depending how you use the thing they don't need to be adjusted too often. As for build quality time will tell I guess. Finale jam sounded really good!

The West Pest sounded phat and dope in the mix for sure and the wave folding is a definite pro and the price is decent for an analog mono with sequencer of that caliber. I guess I need to revisit the specs of the Volca Modular, too, though. Sidebar: I attended the 2007 DEMF and witnessed many modular rigs that were just out of control 1960s huge, making jams that were "meh." So I guess maybe the West Pest is good for dabblers in the field who like to travel light. Thanks for the music, clips, and a great show as always!

Awesome that you got to experience the pest. The intro had the twangy characteristic sound. It definitely has a special and limited sound palette. I actually got a pest for the wavefolder to go with grandmother and the barp2600 in my semimodular foray. Another toober, Bata, got his pest to do some insane bass. I was impressed. This is why I want a rolca s1 to feed the wavefolder waves it can't even imagine. That 4-bit info code truly sucks, but it is easier to use it semi modular with any controls externally, like you have discovered, and skip all the sequencer stuff. I learned a couple of shifts just to get my stuff done, but color me clueless on most of it.

ok but it sounds incredible for the small range of sounds it can do; also I like that the prices are in behringer territory but it's an original machine with a real personality and still quite a few features (for a small portable setup I can appreciate the midi to cv, the s&h; the arp). yeah take that behringer stans. It was a rocky start because the og firmware is horribly buggy with midi (and the step sequencer was only 31 steps!) but after unscrewing a few screws and figuring out the firmware tool it's a lot better. The precurser to the West Pest is the Pittsburgh Modular Double Helix Module. I'll tell you what tho, PGH MOD just sounds good. It's strangely no frills, and yet precise. It just sounds clean all the time.

Ah, nice, a very well done episode that marks the return of featuring really bad gear. The only way of making this horror box worse, would be adding a tongue operated D-Beam and samples of Nick Batt expressing his love for pulse width modulation.

I like anything that's unique &/or quirky with a reasonable step or pattern sequencer as a feature included. There my favourite tools more & more so nowadays. There are the gear we have got to know by standing out for magic sequencer & sound box trickery by now... & there are more of such devices coming thru than ever, without the bigger main spotlight on them as yet... as the bigger players have got. This box is a ace to play a hand on the table tho... Great video once again, I can rely on good product demo's & people like yourself... Who get on with the job of reviewing well, (the ones who leave any ego on hold should be the most successful on here imo) U make knowing what to buy or keep in mind as gear, new or old... Much easier to decide on... We can't as easily demo gear in-store as u once could b4. All this reviewing & video production time now u put into things... Will, & is making u a great producer & programmer of outboard equipment especially. Make sure u turn this period of life & experience... Into some real time afterwards, that u can really take the time u want, with the best gear u find & keep thru this... & there will be may fans of this now, that would like ya music too. U get a good DAWLESS jam up working for the ingredients of releasable electronic music... as quickly as u also do the videos too. If u were a producer living in my city, I'd be trying to get to know u & make music or a project from 4 sure... lots of people get stuck on starting tracks & ideas for inspiration to spring off with electronic gear... The DAW is a blank canvas of infinite depths & direction to open ideas into & begin from. & DAWLESS mean u have to actually open a manual & take interest in a bit of gear to start enjoying anything from it?? So people get stuck starting good material imo & mid age experience of doing this too... U R good at it 4 sure tho.

Awesome vid, again. The West Pest was the device that led down the rabbit-hole to Eurorack modular. $2500 US later I can almost do 4-note polyphony when not doing chaotic beep-boop. 😛

There just aren't a lot of options for West coast style synth, and we'll take whatever we can get. Even with eurorack, a west coast oriented setup might need a soldering iron and some obscure kits to be complete. User interface might be 1/10 points, but that it's affordable is worth at least 20/10 points.
