Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Yamaha DD-10 Digital Drum Bank. Is it the ideal vintage lockdown electronic drum kit?

@@segfault-berlin A lot of the magic is in the sequencer and the level of control you have over samples. It can be used really simply, but if you dig into the workflow it has a lot of capability for the price. Polyrhythms, parameter locks, conditional trigs, etc.

The DD-10 was used by the band Model Plants (look up "モデルプランツ「普通の恋の結末」"). It's based on the YM3301 RYP6 or YM3302 RYP6-2 IC, which is also used in the PSS-560, PSS-570 and a few other things. It uses very low quality versions of the samples from the Yamaha RX series drum machines. I actually like these sounds better than the RX series. The sounds are also possibly identical to the ones in the YM2608 OPNA sound chip, which was used in the NEC PC-8801/PC-9801 series computers (although this IC only has 6 sounds). The YM2608 is described in the datasheet as using ADPCM drum sounds. Likely the YM3301/YM3302 also use ADPCM, which may account for some of the grit. The sounds are also sampled at either 18.645 or 9.3225 kHz, which is considerably lower than the 25 kHz sample rate used in most of the RX series.

Thanks! Good to know!

My parents bought me this one when I was 16 and I still keep it! Back then I liked the DD-5 as its big pads could be played with sticks, but finally I chose the DD-10 as it can record and store 2 user programmed patterns. Years after I realized the DD-10 lacks a MIDI Output so you can't play its pads and get the sound from another instrument! I regret not getting the DD-5 instead, which does have MIDI Out and could be useful today. I just was dragged by its sequencer when I still had no computer with MIDI capabilities. My favorite sound is the 'Castagnet' (white kit, pad 6) which can add nice low end to a regular kickdrum. I never expected the DD-10 to appear on your channel. This IS real bad gear!

Oof, those punchy old prosumer -ish drum sounds remind me of TMBG's early demos. Have you considered looking at the Roland JD-XI? I've had it for a while and haven't really found much of a use for it outside of short 4-bar songs.
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. The JD-XI came up a few times, I'll take a closer look!

Really wanna see you Korg Monotron, Kaosillator 2S, and the poorly working mess that was the Oasys PCI soundcard, as well as the MIDI sounds of the Sound Blaster 16....

BTW, I just tested the current incarnation of this, DD-75, and was a bit surprised about how horrible that sounded and felt to play. For over 200€, that's definately a piece of bad gear. m.thomann.de/fi/yamaha_dd_75.htm

Hahaha, no matter how ***** the gear you make it sound great *thumbs up* Like I said in the DR550 comments, this was my first drummachine back in ?????88 or so. I cant't even remember where and how I got it or where it is now. Had some fun with this machine, a consumer Philips reel to reel, a 15 Deutsche Mark microphone, a turntable from Sperrmüll and a 5 channel mixer (images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--V7G60Owv--/a_exif,c_limit,e_unsharp_mask:80,f_auto,fl_progressive,g_south,h_620,q_90,w_620/v1529433307/irlf8wdz7ctouuykfvki.jpg) and still have some (embarrising) recordings on tape. :-)

I had a DD5 with 4 rubber drum pads you could play with sticks, in 1987 the cheapest way to get midi compatible drum pads. Think the DD5 predates the DD10 or was released at the same time. Anyways, one could argue the DD 10 doesn't really belong in the DD line, you can't play it with sticks. However before the DD10 there was the MR10. It had 6 of the same drum button thingy things the DD10 has, 5 sounds and a whopping 12 preset rhythms. I still use a DD11, but mostly as a drum trigger. Though some of the 6bit? sounds (especially the chromatic sounds like Orchestral hit and Wurlitzer) are so bad I actually use them from time to time :-)

The DD range remains a mystery to me;)

Hehe, I have a DD-5 which is not even close to half a DD-10. Only 12 different sounds, 4 voice polyphony and no midi-in ... I've been tempted to figure out how to hack midi-input via an arduino or something .. lets just say it's one of my "long term projects" .. The most fun I've head by playing some of the built in rythms and sample those. Cut up as a crunchy backdrop for some minimal wave track. Kind of almost works.
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
Those built-in rhythms are really nice!

I'm surprised the samples are just 8 bit when even the Yamaha PSS 680 from the same year, has 12bit sample ROMs for the drum pads :o But still though… i bet it would sound great with some reverb added to it.

I have a DD-5 that came with drum sticks stored on the bottom of the machine. The four drum pads require a fairly hard hit so sticks are necessary to get sound without bruising your fingers.

I had a DD10. Was about £100 used it for most of my teen demos. Don't know what happened to it, I think I might have just chucked it in the bin in the mid 90s when space was precious. What a fool.

I am the proud owner of one of those. Proud owner? maybe that should be embarrassed owner? I bought mine when it first came out, don't think that there were many drum machine products around, or if so at that price, I forget how many £ I paid. I was hoping to use it with a second hand Sequential Circuits Six Track I had. It didn't 😞 . I remembered about it earlier in 2020 and was going to give/sell it to an old man I knew that played accordian and piano at a hospital. Unfortunately Covid 19 stopped that and I wonder if he survived the terrible pandemic because I have not seen or heard from him. 😑

its a boomboombox! I wish I had this as a kid, I got the kawasaki (Big Boom Bam!) instead lol. It looked like a big canon thing you would sling over your sholder and play it like a drumtar and it had 4, non-velocity sensitive pads, each triggering a 1shot sample, on the side was a row of pattern presets, a yellow 1shot boom! button, a volume dial and a speed dial. No cool midi or sequencer features but it still influenced me into loving music.

I've never understood the obsession with including so many crappy patterns on drum pad machines. Isn't making beats why you have one of these in the first place? Do people really like 'jamming' by adding some extra cowbell on top of a 4 bit polka!?
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
Many people were seriously using that stuff instead of a real drummer or for practice on other instruments

Recently bought a DD-11 which sounds way better (and way more 80s lol) than this, but I'm still considering picking up a DD-10 just for that lo-fi sound. Also got a PSS-580 which is a 2-operator FM "toy" synth with actual parameter control for the synthesizer so you can do a lot more with it than on most FM "toy" synths from Yamaha (and there's even an editor for it!). Other synths with the same synth engine and parameter controls are PSS-480, PSS-680 & PSS-780 (in case peeked your interest).

now possibly take on the Access Virus, please. I have loved using this synth, It's really great. BUT it is also an unstable mess to use in the "total integration" form they suggest. Also has been abandoned by the manufacturer more or less. If you look in the Virus TI forums you will find loads of people who both love this synth but at the same time don't feel like they can use it in a live or studio session setting because of drivers being old and the synth just generally not being reliable on a number of fronts. And that has also been my experience with it... :/

I’m not sure how hated they are, but it would be fun to see you take a look at the Korg Kaoss pad or kpII. The second one is so small it’s almost comical they expect you to play an actual melody on it. Don’t get me wrong, I picked up a kpII to use as a recorder/effects unite with my hardware setup and I enjoy some functions on it, but it’s definitely bad gear material
