I want to connect audio interface to a mixer (backwoards). But im new in audio interface market, cant find a perfect for my need. My idie is to conect all instruments and mics to audio interface first, for axample in 16 inputs, then i need 16 outputs on interface to conect them to a mixer. The idie is to record all dry signals, meahille playing with all eq and efects on mixer, and between interface and mixer add some preamps, efect pedals for instruments, some pedals for vocals, maby some modules, sound filters. Soo im trtying to find audio interface with 16 ins and outs, plus with main outs, soo i can filter main signal but soome of them i could want to conect seperate to a mixer, soo maby there is 16 and 16 out interface with button ''main'' off and on? And im still not shure for those audio interface outputs. If they have 16 input and 16 output, do they mach as No5 in -is 5 out and 11 in - is 11 out? I found some called personal monitor dbx TR1616 16x16 , can it record dry signal? and send seperate signals to mixer? and maby there is something similar but with buttons ''to main'' off anf on?

A mixer is a problem solver, you can use it as an advanced patch bay, you can use the mic pre-amps, the eq's, hook the monitors to it. You can mix in analogue and send the the mix to box. They look cool and have the WOW factor. Last but not least you can find some nice old quality mixers for cheap !!

I use my analog Xenyx mixer as a 0 latency amplifier for my headphones ignoring buffer size and driver BS. I connect the analog outputs of my high end desktop PC to the console directly with RCA cables, then 3.5mm to 6.5mm adapters. Since i have a high quality motherboard with high quality analog outputs and converters, this trick works. For my laptop, i definetly need an external interface.

I use a mixer in my studio. For a while I use the Mackie CR 1604VLZ yet it needs to be cleaned via an electronics repair shop. I sometimes used the Yamaha MG06X as additional inputs. I also use the PMP2000.

That's a great question. It depends on the gear you're connecting. A professional console will generally either sound transparent with low-noise or will have a pleasing effect on the sound. But some gear is noisy with a lot of undesirable distortion.

@@AudioUniversity thank you, I have two cheap mixers to increase the number of inputs, my Steinberg audio interface has only 2 inputs. I use two Moukey mixers, but it seems to sound OK (BTW they sell so well that the 8 input is unavailable). I know my ideal options would be 1/ to get a rack mixer 16 inputs and keep my 2 input audio interface or 2/ two 8 input adio interfaces or 3/ a multi-track mixer/interface like Zoom L20 But since it seems to sound OK, i'm nor sure I really need it

Awesome, i use my xenyx2222 to plug all mi vocal mics and quickly find the sound i want through the onboard channel strip. Also use the main output to get the signal with fx, and the insert to record a dry signal (as safety net).. having two versions of each take. Which can become handy if later you want to tweak the dry signal in the DAW. Also monitoring from the mixer headphones with zero latency improves expressiveness of the artists.

I’ve started looking at mixers for this very reason. I was hoping that I’d be able to have my DAW record both a dry signal and one processed with the onboard comp and eq so that I could monitor with the processed signal and not use CPU on plugins. Would I be able to do this with any of the xenyx usb models?

@@slayabouts Hi, definitely. you'd be monitoring a signal with comp, Eq and FX(Del,Rev) from the channel strip of the mixer (thus zero latency and leaving CPU of your PC free) and recording both versions of the same take simultaneously (dry/colored fx). So, in order accomplish this check Xenyx models above "x1832usb" series. these have inserts per channel (where the dry signal prefader will come / one clic method) and the main output (where the colored/fx signal will come). other higher end models such us the X2442usb have direct output per channel, so the same can be achieved on a more sophisticated fashion.

@@tukoramirez8478 Actually what I was thinking of doing now is getting an XLR splitter and running one directly into my interface and the other into one channel on the mixer. Then using the headphone out on my interface and sending that to the second channel of my mixer and monitoring through the mixer rather than my interface. I think that would pretty much be zero latency, right?

@@slayabouts indeed, if your audio interface has direct monitoring capability. that means the audio will be fed directly to the headphone jack, before A/D and D/A conversion take place.

@@tukoramirez8478 well the signal I’d use for monitoring would be fed directly to the mixer (mic > splitter > mixer) while the one for recording would go to the interface (mic > splitter > interface). I’d then feed the headphone output of the master bus to a second channel of the mixer

I have an Allen and Heath 10-channel mixer (zed-10) and love it. Totally recommend. It has really nice-sounding EQ on every channel, some great routing options, and the 3rd and 4th channels have special solid-state preamps that are designed to overdrive in a tube-like manner when the gain is cranked (they recommend using these channels for recording guitars directly, and I can attest, this makes DI guitars sound so much better, even sans effects). Oh and I got it for less than $400. Totally recommend. Anyway loved this video! Thanks for making these.

When you using a mixer as pass-through could the quality of the sound goes bad, because of the mixer quality?

Yes - noise and distortion could be added to the signal from the mixer. However, most mixers have very low noise floors and distortion levels.

What’s the benefit of connecting an audio mixer with usb connection to an audio interface vs jst directly connecting the audio mixer with usb directly into the computer ?

Good question! There isn’t a huge benefit in this case. Honestly, it’s just the only small mixer I had to make the video. However, there could bebefits if your audio interface is higher quality than your mixer. For example, if I plugged a mixer into a UAD Apollo Twin (instead of the built-in USB on the mixer), I would get better A-D and D-A conversion, less latency, and perhaps some other benefits. I'm getting to where I'm understanding the whole interface vs. mixer debate enough to know that I def should be using a mixer, and I'm also beginning to get a better idea of what mixer price-points to start researching, but I'm still in the dark about certain routing scenarios that I know I'll need to understand more clearly before I can start narrowing it all down to the mixer that's best for me. The current scenario that I've got stuck in my brain is when I'm recording live guitar while hearing tracks that have already been recorded like drums-n-bass playing back through my monitors "OR" headphones. I have seen a few tutorials that suggest I can "somehow" route the tracks/audio that I've already recorded (aka "backing tracks") from my DAW back to a channel(s) on my Mixer, but I've yet to see anyone fully-n-clearly cover the reasoning behind this routing option as well as the possibilities that are afforded by taking this route?? I do know that I can monitor my pre-recorded audio through the outputs of my interface and record that way, but if re-routing my finished tracks back to the mixer for playback while I'm recording guitar tracks offers me some more/better tonal options, then I'd really like to know more about that option before I buy a mixer that I discover later on cannot do something that would've been very important/useful to me had I known more. lol

I have a Behringer LP 9800 Powered 14 channel mixer. I need to connect it to an audio interface so that I can stream my live mix. However it only has one set of outputs on the back. How can I accomplish this? Buy a splitter. It has pre-amp outputs on the front side of the mixer, but I'm not really clear how those work.

You should use the preamp outs. That means the signal is not amplified for speakers. Sending the speaker out to an audio interface could cause damage to everything involved.

That history lesson with tape is a little off. Originally in the mid 40s and 50s they did only have mono and stereo tape to record to so the mix had to be right on the spot. However by the late 50s (around 56-58) when 4 track was invented, TRS inserts were implemented into consoles and allowed recording and playback to and from individual tracks on the tape machine.

You could use the USB on the mixer. I did not use it for the sake of demonstrating a more universal method that works without a USB mixer.

The mixer requires a power connection, but it doesn't have to be a "powered mixer" (a powered mixer is a mixer with a built-in amplifier for powering speakers). Are you sending out of the mixer into the interface? Or are you sending out of the interface and into the mixer?

So, I'm an idiot. I bought a mixer because I was tired of unplugging and plugging in instruments into my audio interface, but I didn't realize that it would mix it all down to stereo. Now, my mixer does actually have separated outputs over a DB25 connector, but my 2i2 still can't take more than 2 inputs so it's moot. However, what this does allow me is to have all my gear (3x synths, 1x mic and 1x guitar) plugged in and set at the correct level but they're muted (and panned) and only go full volume when I actually need it. This has made producing a whole lot easier. Another thing I like is how hands-on it is. Yes, I have a midi controller with 8 faders and Ableton integration, but it still doesn't have any physical meters and the workflow on the mixer is just faster for me. Best of both worlds would be a mixer with individual outputs for each channel and an audio interface that can take that. Because the best part about a mixer is that you don't need a computer to actually get sound out of it.

I’m using a audio interface but would like to use my usb mixer so that I can alternate between the two when I’m doing a podcast, recording a tutorial, or just making a beat. If I’m recording a song I use the audio interface with a tube pre amp. When I record a tutorial I use the mixer via usb to record my vocals and have control equalizing my voice since I can’t do it in my video editing software. Finally I produce my beats 🎧 through my audio interface since I do all my beats effects through my DAW. Am I doing this right or is there a batter way? I heard that by connecting both mixer and audio interface, some engineers record into the Daw. Play the song thru the mice and record back into the Daw for that analog feel. Have you tried this concept? Is this a good concept to utilize? Should I use this for Beats, Tutorials, or Pod cast? This maybe a next video lol.

I do have a YAMAHA mx12/4 for occasional use and I said occasional because I would like to avoid letting analog signals go through many amplifiers (keep in mind that there are tons of operational amplifiers inside an analog mixer). I’m saying that analog mixers can be pretty nasty when all you are trying to achieve is to have instruments’ sounds captured with precision. I really wish most analog mixers had EQ-bypass buttons at least which would have made things far easier for me in terms of phase-shifts they cause. So the only times I’d use my mixer is when I need multiple microphone amplifiers with phantom power supply, and, well, when I livestream on my phone using UA-25EX in UAC mode. If I were to buy another mixer in future times for setup upgrade, YAMAHA DM2000 would be one and only choice for me because EQs on digital mixers (when set to the neutral) won’t do any harms and they serve great as multi-channel ADC/DAC.

Isn't it a bit doing the same thing multiple times. So using the DAW with effects and mixing does that not root out a mixer? Upgrade audio interface to more channels in same price range comparison with mixer gives you higher quality mic. pre amps and with keeping up to date more durable. There are multi tracking audio interfaces that do a lil mixing as well as in the future I see the mixers disappear in software and a more complete audio interface device especially with potential of A.I.

if i connect the line outputs of the interface to one of the chanells of the mixer(like your third example) where should i set the level of the output on the interface? I would recommend setting the output level of the interface to a level that requires the least preamp gain without distortion. That way, you won't add preamp noise.

I just need to know if I can record my guitar digitally with my audio interface, without latency if I were ti get an analog mixer? I've been practicing the Law of Attraction for awhile now and would like to make positive affirmation subliminal music? Meaning I'd like to record my voice underneath music (very very very low) saying things like I AM HEALTHY, I AM LOVE, I AM POSITIVE AND ETC then place the music or calming sound music over those positive affirmations. There's a 4th use case for an analog mixing console, amplification for headphones. For this to work, the computer must have a top notch motherboard with a very low noise floor and no jitter and many audio outputs. You get 0 latency amplification.

You never mentioned using mixer for zero latency monitoring Basically, it doesnt record anything, you just hook it up to reduce latency in monitoring by not having to deal with what the DAW tries to handle

Why could you not tweak EQ/Pan/Volume after recording into your DAW when recording this route? Meaning... why can't I use the mixer to adjust levels on the DAW just like I would through the DAW with my mouse? That's what I want to avoid... mixing with my mouse (or keyboard short cuts). You will need an output for every track to come out of the DAW, into the mixer, through the mixer, and out of the mixer into the inputs on your interface. In most cases, it’s better and easier to mix in the DAW rather than using an analog mixer, in my opinion.

I liked the video but, since i am new to these things i still need help: I have a mixer EURORACK MX 1604a, a MOTU mk3 traveler and two pair of speakers. I tried so many times and I could not get them to work together for me. What I want is: to be able to record and listen to the speakers and through the headphones ( as I can not make noise at night). PLEASE tell me where the cables should go. Any help will be very much appreciated!

You can connect the "Main Outputs" to your speakers, and you should be able to send a microphone to the speakers through the mixer. You might instead choose to connect the mixer to the interface through the "Main Outputs", then you could record the microphone into the interface. It just depends on how you want it to be set up. It looks like you can use TRS cables no matter how you decide to do it. I hope this helps!

Really nice video. I just have a 2 channel mixer going into my interface to blend guitar tones. I’m curious though at the beginning of the video during you talking about recording. You panned all of your drums to the left and everything else to the right. How exactly does that work going into the DAW in terms or a stereo image? Wouldn’t that end up like a Beatles album having the drums on one side and everything else on the other? I myself don’t enough inputs on my mixer to do that but I’d like to get one so I can record drums at some point.

In that technique, you would record the left output of the mixer and the right output of the mixer to separate mono tracks. In the DAW, those mono signals would start panned to the center.

@@AudioUniversity That's what I was doing, I have a track in my DAW, send it out through the outputs 1 and 2 of my interface connecting them to line in on channel 1 and 2 of my mixer, connect the outputs of the mixer in the inputs 1 and 2 of my interface, make a new track with inputs 1 and 2, play the original file, set the levels and EQ on my mixer and I get instant feedback. What am I doing wrong?

When I record in the studio I use input monitoring without any problems, but when I'm at home and use a simple set up with an audio interface, a 4 channel mixer and a laptop, it's a PITA. The thing is, when I use output 3 and 4 of my interface I don't have any problem, but when I use output 1 and 2, I need to turn up the main output on my audio interface to get any signal into the mixer and that gives me the feedback. I suppose that's pretty common on simple interfaces with just two main outputs. Any workaround for that?

depends by what mixer you have and how it's routed, bigger mixers have more routing options so it all comes down to the mixer you have. On some mixers you can bypass the EQ section, on others you can't.

In order to do that, you'll need an audio interface with 32 outputs and 2 inputs. You'll probably connect the outputs of the audio interface to the inputs of the mixer with 32 1/4-inch TRS cables and connect the master outputs of the mixer to the inputs of the audio interface with two 1/4-inch TRS cables.

For live sound recording, I would recommend driving the PA speakers with the main left and right output in most cases. You can use an AUX to send a separate mix to your Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. On more advanced consoles, you can use Matrix channels to route the left and right mix to multiple destinations, but on a simpler mixer the above method is best. I hope this helps! Thanks!

Hi...thanks for this video. I have always been using mostly only my audio interface, Roland Quad Core or Audient iD22. However, I do have a Behringer SX3242FX mixer which I don't really use. I was wondering if I can send my music from my DAW to my mixer and back but have had no success so far in getting it right. I tried plugin in my monitor outputs left and right on my interface to my mixer channels 1 and 2 and then my main outs of my mixer to my interface input left and right but no sound coming through. You mentioned something about sending like perhaps a guitar track from your DAW to your mixer and using its eq and affects and sending it back to the DAW via the audio interface. I just wish I knew how to do that. I wanted to send my drum track to my mixer and back to the DAW but no success so far. Wish you could make a video on how with as much detail as possible showing the cables setup and DAW settings as well.

I'm trying out scenario 3. I have a Scarlett 18i20 and Octopre Mk3. I can't use the outs from the octopre for some reason and I have outboard gear connected to the i/o of the 18i20. I dont use a patchbay. Is there a way I could get the outs of the octopre to feed the mixer? I've tried almost everything but I'm baffled. Anyone have a suggestion. Hope I've explained that well

I'd like to connect my mixer to speakers, but I also want to route two microphones (connected to the mixer) to my interface. I can't quite figure this out or find any resources for it. I would connect the “Main” outputs of the mixer to the speakers. If you want all microphones to record to separate tracks, I’d connect the “Direct Outs” of the mixer channels to the interface. If you want to mix the mics together into one track, I’d connect an “Aux” to the interface and send the mics to that aux.

your videos are the best and yes i use a mixer in my home studio , it’s a Sony dmx p05 portable mixer and it’s got some awesome compression on it , and the crazy thing is this thing literally have like tons of adjustments through 2 knobs and a very small panel on the front to show you the numbers and let’s you save up to 10 different types of custom compression and limiter settings, it also has a Low Cut filter that works up to 400hz and the good thing is it does have a mid side link that i can do magic with when i’m recording my artist

I’m willing to pay someone to help me with a very infuriating problem I’m having trying to record. Very simply put, my gain knob is set all the way to zero on my audio interface, but the track in the DAW is clipping. When the gain is at zero, I shouldn’t be getting signal , especially one that is so loud. I cannot figure out this problem. Someone please help me.

The old nameless 4-channel mixer I have, with very nice pre-amps, gets connected to the 4-channel interface (UMC404HD) directly into the return to bypass the interfaces pre-amps. The setup is mainly used for talk radio.

Yes. But your computer must have many analog inputs and a top tier soundboard or analog to digital converter with the smallest amount of noise as possible and jitter. I don't have an audio interface, so i use my Xenyx console as an amplifier for my DT 770 Pros headphones and the input is the motherboard analog output from my desktop PC. Basically no noise and 0 latency because the chain is analog. I don't hear jitter as well. I still want to buy an external USB interface for more channels and my laptop that is very noisy and only has one analog output/input.
