I don't think lily realizes that a show can be both. All good media has some blend of genres. A drama won't really be interesting unless it has some comedy, and a comedy wont mean anything unless it has some drama. It's best if they coexist. A wholesome moment in a dark show will feel a lot more earned and it'll be a good contrast. If we only have the wholesome shit it'll just feel too saccarine and boring

My least favorite part of SU was when Steven pulled out a real gun and shot Lars right in the head. It was a pretty big character break for Steven, and I can't believe they actually let that on children's television, but the following episodes grappling with the idea of Steven being arrested and going to jail was pretty neat and an accurate depiction of how the justice (or injustice, more like) system operates was quite refreshing and never seen before.

People see some tropes being subverted and immediately scream deconstruction. I went to Zenkaikon 2023 and went to Zeno's panel where he spefically said that he would like anyone regardless of race to be able to voice any character of any race. Welcome back everyone! For anyone outside the loop, this video was false copywrite claimed by Lily and was pulled down. Lily was attempting to get Sai's channel taken down in it's entirety due to this video highlighting Lily's odd obsession with incest and the "Antartica show". I hope this clears up any confusion as to why the comment section seemed to freeze at the July mark.

I find it kinda funny that on her Tumblr blog she mentions Lolita, but only as a question of whether or not the book is anti or pro pedophilia, when that's not what the book is about. It's about unreliable narrators first and foremost, then it's a satire of pedophilia in US. She most likely didn't read the book because she doesn't talk about it further. Utena is like the Citizen Kane of anime but it's also such an unserious goofy show. One of the things i love is how often the show is goofy and also kind of 'cheap' (call me nostalgia-poisoned but reused stock footage is one of my favorite things about older anime, I love the opening of the Gate and Spiral Staircase leading up to the Castle in the Sky that take up a full 3 minutes of screentime it's like Cocomelon for me)

It seems perfectly possible to me for a piece of media to contain both wholesome and dark elements. I'd say Invincible strikes the perfect balance in tone between the two, which is a big reason why I love that show so much! It's got the gore and grittiness of The Boys, as well as the earnest optimism of My Adventures with Superman. When something's written well, you don't need to choose!

For sure, that’s definitely a great example. And like Sai said, the boys does also have its wholesome moments within the dark and edginess of it all. Like these last few episodes with Hughie and his dad were a perfect blend of wholesome family moments and regaining the lost time vs. The darker grittier reality of what’s going on and what Hughie has to do to solve it. Really fucking broke me when I first watched it, but it was also super wholesome seeing those good times even if they were only brief 😭

If they all have different body types then none of those individual characters can be a generalization of how black people look. Also ironic that they said SU "failed to account for intersectionality" when western society's ideals for what is "feminine" intersect with racism and fatphobia at times. There's people who shrivel up and die at any kind of media with topics like rape, gore, cannibalism, or sex (to name a few); and there's people who read and/or make art and fanfic that has those topics in them. There are people who carry on as fandom has since forever, enjoying both, but they're the quiet minority. Why do people think this debate is fake? Because its mainly localized to Tumblr, a site most people abadoned years ago and probably don't even think about anymore. Some of it breaches containment to Twitter and other sites with fandom interaction from what I've seen, but from my experience its mostly on the Beloved Hellsite, and it makes the fandom experience over there feel like traversing a minefield. Honestly Lily's issue was that she covered this topic in her usual shitty way, fuck I could do a better job at explaining this. Its not hard finding ice cold takes on media consumption made by people who unironically believe what they're typing.

Those articles about SU's racism were both insane, and shows how not having media literacy makes for bad criticism of media. Sugilite is not rowdy, tough, and angry is not because she's black, Sugilite has that personality because she's a fusion. Sugilite is made of Ruby, Amythest, and Sapphire. Ruby and Amythest both enjoy fighting, get angry/annoyed for long periods of time, and can be extremely stubborn. Their similar personalities overpower Sapphire's calm and collected personality, only letting the aloof side of her to contribute to Sugilite. I'll admit, this is not very hard to figure out, and most people can come to this conclusion if they actually watch Steven Universe. However, if you decide to never put a slight bit of thought into what you're watching and take everything as literally as possible, then you come to the conclusion that Sugilite is racist because "black coded character + non coded character= angry giant monster, there is no other way to interpret this"

They're very fun and descriptive, and always match the character they're narrating for. A fun thing about Epithet as a whole is how cartoonishly ridiculous it is (My favorite example is the dymanic between Ramsey and Percy in the second half of the show. Most people would expect Percy to be the straightman, but she's a straightman to such a cartoonish degree that she wraps around to being crazy like the rest of the cast, excluding Ramsey, who is the actual straight man). I have mixed opinions on Jelloapocalypse as a critic, but I personally think he's a really good writer

I might superchat this on your next Lorch reaction just to get the info out there; Disclaimer: It's been several years, so I might actually be a bit off on her precise reactions, just letting y'all know. On multiple VODs you mention how Lily's SU video and hatred lines up with Lizzie breaking up with her. As a former fan, I can confirm she had at least a few podcasts/streams before the SU is Garbage vid where she would discuss the episodes with Lizzie and Sketchy. I'm pretty sure it was their reactions as the series was airing, and they were still up. I dunno if they still are because I just. Don't seeking out Lorch vids anymore. One in particular I remember was about the episode we see of Yellow and Blue Diamond behind the scenes, discussing their trauma?(sorry I haven't watched SU yet but fully plan to). The way she analyzes their sorrow, the music, etc, is so vastly different from how she treats them in SU is Garbage. She was not nearly as absurdly vitriolic towards the series as she is post-breakup. I can't remember if the reaction was positive, but she definitely didn't treat the Diamonds like n*zis, and she definitely didn't hate the series overall. You might not be too far off the mark here. Would recommend seeing if anyone can find it. But, considering it also involves Lizzie and Sketchy, I would prolly recommend getting permission if you were to react to it. Wpuld be a great addition to the Lorch Lore. The Lorech, if you will. I also remember an MLP podcast where she actively discussed that shipping any of the female characters with their sisters isn't a problem.

Wha- Garnet wasn't sidelined at all, she got more focus then Amethyst! She just spends a lot of time dealing with fusion stuff because it's LITERALLY the entire character arc of the two other people that make her up. It's called knowing your characters, it makes sense to have Garnet deal with stuff that relates to the core of who she is. Pearl deals with insecurities over rose and getting over it, Steven deals with his powers and his responsibility, Amethyst deals with feeling inadequate as a gem that was born small, and Garnet deals with fusion and her role as the leader of the group. What, would it make the story better if Steven and Amethyst found the fusion experiments instead and just didn't have as much to say about them because they don't have that much knowledge or experience with fusion stuff overall?

Yeah, the Sugilite take is just really dumb. All the fusions are based on the personalities of the individuals. Garnet is balanced because it's a really hotheaded fighter with a calm and more thoughtful gem, but because they love eachother Garnet has an ego to her. Because she's literally in love with herself. So you take that ego and you mix it with Amethyst's wild and impulsive nature, and you get someone that just acts reflexively without any self-awareness or control. It's basically "What if Amethyst had 100% confidence in her childish impulses." That's why Opal is so controlled, because Pearl's super paranoid and cautious nature is able to hold Amethyst back, but Amethyst's own confidence makes Pearl more assured in her decision making. They struggle to work together, but when they do they complement eachother's personalities. Actual thought went into these forms. Like, why does she think Sardonyx is a weirdo stage magician? It's Garnet's ego mixing with Pearl's heightened sense of self, so you get someone really fun and full of themselves that wants to show off. But then you have Steven fusing with Amethyst and you get someone that plays into both of their quirks because they amplify eachother's childish natures. And then you have things like Steven fusing with his dad and they become a weirdo rock star that's putting both their cheesy natures together into something based on classic music, something they both idolize. Worth mentioning, this isn't just me bullshitting, either. All the fusions mix instruments, too, which is really distinct when you listen to any fusion theme with Steven because his Chiptune aesthetic is super easy to pick out. They didn't just sit down and go "Ah yes, I want the black fusion to be aggressive", there's a lot of actual thought that goes into these things. Garnet's not even the only black character, Amethyst is also pretty distinctly black-coded, but I don't see Lily making any gripes about her, lol!

A Place Further than the Universe was directed by Atsuko Ishizuka, who is a women. She was also the storyboard artist for eps 1-3, 12-13, and the OP, as well as directing eps 1, 13, and the OP again. It wasn't an entirely male lead production as is implied. There were women in high positions making creative decisions. Feels icky to leave this very important detail out to make the show look as bad as possible. I don't know, man. Lily could unironically slap back if she had a brain.

Just rubs me the wrong way a little, I feel like it delegitimizes women experiences (fans and creators) by blanketing everything about the show as for men by men, a bit. I do think it's valid to still be put off by it though, since a prominent creator(s) was a man, and no doubt less than pure men make up a good chunk of the fanbase and were in mind as part of the intended audience. Although, I think something can be said of the men who create or view the work as more than just fetishism in mind (don't know a lot about Hanada so not saying he applies or not). The thing about an M rating being equivalent to a PG-13 is Lily trying to rip off MovieBob. She misunderstood and reversed a reasonable thing Bob said in a video around 12 years ago. He was trying to make a gift guide for non-gamers who were interested in holiday gifts for gaming friends and family. In that video he explained that the ESRB tends to be more harsh in its judgement than the MPAA and as a result a story that if it were a movie would get a PG-13 would be rated M as a game. I kinda feel like Lily is almost neither left or right, and more someone who wants to be different and correct, most of the time she hates things people love because hating what people love makes you unique to her it seems. And it doesnt matter how much she talks badly about something, seemingly purposefully talking in a way that is meant to make the viewer feel bad for just enjoying it, if you critique her, even its a minor correction, its immediate harassment and she needs to bring up her trauma and how everyone abused her. But I think they had a partner die and they used to watch SU together and it became a show that was endearing for them.
