just a lil comment about the toxic relationship segment - as someone who was in an abusive relationship and went back to my abuser, and was then abandoned by my friends….. this is often the abuser’s goal. to isolate their victim and leave them with no support system. just something to think about, most of us are just trapped and not at all trying to be annoying ! xoxo

I kinda wish Chris and Caitlyn told the caller with the friend who’s in a toxic relationship that she should express to her friend how she feels and that’s she’s concerned for her emotional well-being. I think the caller wants to avoid just saying I told you so or we already talked about it. I’ve been in toxic relationships and have had family and friends tell me that it hurt them when I was suffering in the relationship. I realized that even if I didn’t care for my own happiness, the relationship was hurting the people around me and therefore hurting me.

For the toxic relationship segment- even if someone decides to take a step back from the friendship because their friend won't change their behavior, make sure to express (if you mean it) that you'd be there for them and a safe space if they were to leave! Sometimes the victim of abuse isn't even telling friends the worst of it, especially if they've 'complaining' for a while and everyone is getting tired. They may actually be *scared* to leave, or think the abuser's efforts to separate them from friends/family is beginning to work and they wouldn't have a place to go. Not saying ya'll should have included that, it's impossible to cover all the bases in a quick podcast on such a deep topic!! But if somebody's reading this who has someone close in a toxic relationship- just remember you can set boundaries that you're not going to be complicit in a cycle, while still being there for them in the long run!
@Elliehallbergswe3 жыл бұрын
I though about that too. As a friends you should stay- whatever happens. Answer, ask and be there whenever that friends decides to leave that toxic relationship. It’s not yours to decide a friends relationship, if you’d be a real friend you’d just stick with the bullshit til the friend realize the red flags themself. For someone that’s in a toxic relationship and doesn’t know how to leave, there is help to get and real friends that will stick with your truth. Don’t give up! You are not alone.

@@Elliehallbergswe Yes, but you also shouldn’t sacrifice your well-being to help someone else. If you need to distance yourself from the situation, you should. Taking care of yourself doesn’t make you a bad friend. I agree with OP’s approach, if you can handle it. Communication is key.
@Momusicrec2 жыл бұрын
@@Elliehallbergswe i dont have the time to babysit people. if ur being manipulated, thats fine, and its not ur fault. but.... what you do about it is on you. you have the decision to leave you have the decision to stay (unless they are holding you at gunpoint.) i blame both the abusers and the victims. both are stupid people. people who are easily manipulated usually have a weak willpower and low self esteem which is why i always say to work on yourself before you try and get in a relationship w someone. i dont befriend stupid people. im not wasting my time waiting for you to realize your stupidity, because its not on me, its on you.

Hi! I love u both. Also I am a clinical social worker and I wanted to offer some thoughts on the crappy boyfriend conversation. It's difficult to support a friend through a toxic relationship. The conversations are circular; toxic dynamics create codependency and prey on existing attachment issues. They are literally crazy making. When possible I encourage loved ones to express themselves clearly about what the see, maintain boundaries for their own emotional sake, but to remain as engaged, nonnudgemental and empathic as possible. "Tough love" is rarely helpful to the already defensive and alienated.

So Caitlin is cool, and it's awesome that she's helping to spread awareness for people with Alzheimer's and their care takers (family and professionals). I wish that Hilarity for Charity better informed her of Alzheimer's. It's not just a disease for "old" people, you can start showing symptoms at a younger age. But I do love that the charity is supporting the care takers because they do work really hard and they need all the support they can get.
