I don't get why, when citizens pull out a phone and say they will record it, the cops ALWAYS say, "Well I'm recording too." Do they perceive that as some sort of win? It's an indication that we don't trust them to be honest and forthcoming with their own recordings. They always mute things or turn off bodycams when it's convenient for them, or drag their heels handing them out.

@@cmhsky Years ago during my criminal justice major it was a topic that Do people join the police because they feel comfortable with the strict and authoritarian nature of the job? OR do they get formed by the job into authoritarians because of all the crap they have to deal with everyday? 1) cops DO see an incredible amount of ...well Crap People and situations. They are lied to spit at, shot at, cursed at, maligned for just doing their job, and general shat upon for protecting law and order. It is no wonder that they would develop an attitude of hostility towards people outside their field. 2) Many of the police are prior service, which means they love and crave order and authority. Many are kids of cops or the military which can bring the same idea. 3) Neither of those is complete though and neither is why all police get to that stage. 4) This is a reason to try to understand and reform Policing in the US. We need to remove and replace this attitude with one of public service, and one that aims to protect the public as well as protect the law. So I would agree with you. There is far more to it than just that, but You are right, the first cop just wanted to deal with a "problem" and did not care about the constitution that he swore at least 1 oath to protect, and possibly 2 depending on the one he swore as a cop as well.

I think this is an important point that NEEDS to be addressed. When the state has to pay people for damages in court cases, that money should not under any circumstance come from taxpayer money, it should come exclusively from the donations and other sources of revenue they have (because make no mistake, the city does have actually sources of revenue, not just tax dollars). It is fundamentally wrong to use taxpayer money to pay individuals or groups for damages caused by the government because that is not a "punishment," that is just a redistribution of tax funds which hurts their entire taxpayer population.

Oh, they'll pass the test easily enough to get the badge. The problem is they forget it, ignore it, or in a work culture that pressures them to violate what they know to be the right thing. What *should* happen is mandatory re-training/re-education on civil rights and constitutional rights at *least* twice a year. And they wouldn't have to hire an expensive consultant with an extensive curriculum: just choose a handful of videos from this channel!

I had an experience similar to this a few months ago with the same police department. I was walking my two dogs on the public sidewalk near the beach. An officer stopped on the road, got out and told me “no dogs allowed on the beach”. I did see the signs that prohibited dogs on the beach, which is why I chose to stay on the sidewalk. When I mentioned being on the sidewalk, he immediately started yelling at me in an aggressive manner. I told him I would leave, went back to my car and got the hell out of there. This department seems to have a problem with freedom.

That’s not unusual. Disabilities don’t necessarily need to stop the person from working, or be readily apparent. They can be things that effect the individual’s daily life or their enjoyment of daily life (PTSD for example). Those are often referred to as “invisible disabilities” because the individual outwardly appears fine. It’s also common for veterans to not realize they qualified for disability from the VA and receive back pay many years later, or be forced into a medical discharge and receive disability as a form of severance pay. It’s really not as strange as you might think for someone to receive VA disability and still be fully employed.

After Vietnam, I was a homeless veteran for a time. I went looking for an old comrade but he had died from exposure to Agent Orange. I was just minding my business, but the corrupt local sheriff tried running me out of town. He put me in jail on charges of vagrancy, resisting arrest, and possessing a concealed knife. His deputies let it all happen. It triggered my PTSD and I snapped, fought my way out and escaped into the woods. They tried hunting me down with rifles, dogs, and a helicopter, but I used my deadly skills to eliminate them one by one. Eventually they called in my former commanding officer, Colonel Sam Trautman. But it was just a ploy to get my guard down while they tried blowing up the mine I was holed up in. I had to shed more blood then, because long story short, ACAB.

Try and make it make sense? If they catch anyone on disability in my state lifting more then 25 pounds, they will remove your disability benefits. I should be considered disabled, but I found the restrictions and hoops they make you jump through, not to be worth the effort. I broke 8 vertebrae in a car accident back in 2008 and suffered permanent nerve and spinal cord damage. I just work part time and run a tiny tea business on my family farm. Some days I can put 6-8 hours of hard work, while others I am unable to get out of bed. I barely get by and this guy gets to collect disability benefits and a cushy police salary. They have talked about this in several cases. As a witness cop your job is to enforce the commanding cops behavior be it wrong or not. You can't held liable for going rogue if the leading officer(s) commands you to do so UNLESS he commands you to break federal law or attempted murder (passing out a victim by pressing their knee to the throat for example)

I asked the tax office for the police policy...at first they said they couldn't release the info for "security reasons" and cited a Mississippi code, I read the code and it turns out I was allowed to get a redacted version....cost me 60 bucks or so. Based on "reasonableness" the officer was solidified in trying to restore what any reasonably thinking citizen would consider, normal activity.

What do you prefer? A load of cops that easily back down and aren't driven at all? There's nothing wrong with ego. This remained verbal and largely respectful seeing as how the guy really wasn't bothered about pissing the cop off. He even told him to de-escalate, meaning he knew that HE himself was escalating it - which he was. Reading his sign after being told "What are you doing" isn't an answer. The sentence on that sign isn't a 'doing' action. It's a claim that he thinks a mythical supernatural figure should bless homeless vets. And what does that even mean? That he thinks his 'god' is leaving them out? If they are homeless I guess they're not being blessed. So he's asking god to do it? The ego on him right? The sign was pointless and meaningless, only the sentiment remains. The guy had nothing better to do with his day than try to provoke reactions from cops/people in different places.
