Great video. I'll never get tired of hearing Jay talk about cars. In regards to the dashboard, the word "dash" in this context refers to a sudden shaking motion that causes material to fly through the air. Think of a "dash of salt." The dashboard was, as Jay suggests, originally a panel found on horse-drawn vehicles, which prevented muck kicked up by the horse's hooves from hitting you in the face. What's the connection to the dash in your car? Google a picture of a "Curved Dash Oldsmobile". Truly a horseless carriage, it's the first American car produced in significant numbers. The dash is down by the driver's feet. It provided a convenient place to mount some gauges to monitor the engine's functions. Thus the term morphed into the modern sense. By the way, to car a designer, that thing in your car is NOT a "dashboard". Those are found on Amish buggies. An automobile has an INSTRUMENT PANEL, or I.P. So now you know.

People live hundreds thousands of years but the car was invented only less than hundred and forty years ago. It was just almost two weeks ago if we look back at the history of mankind. It is such a pleasure to enjoy car history and development of technologies, automobile sport etc. over the last more than hundred years till today. Not mentioning other technologie that we have a great pleasure to enjoy today. How lucke we are to live today.... You guys are doing great work, I love your channel. Every episode is a small masterpiece. Greetings from Ukraine and Good Luck!!

Oh my! Jay! My grandfather had a patent for a water injection system near 1900. It was meant to retard the timing for Les pinging on inferior gasoline. It was also advertised to be used in the cold winters of Rochester NY by then filling it with raw gas as a choke/primer. We have all the parents and a few of the parts!

The early history of road racing in France is fascinating. They raced on public roads used by horse drawn wagons. Spectators would stand in the road having no idea how fast the cars were coming at them.

Donald and Jay might enjoy a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, called "The. Horror of the Heights". It was written in 1913, but set in 1924. It's a really interesting projection of technology, some awareness of the effects of atmospheric gas pressure, (completely wrong in parts), and an unconscious prediction of a real, but then unknown hazard to aviation. (Thunderstorms.)
