Always a pleasure to hear Donald Osborne speak on cars
@Team33Team3322 күн бұрын
14:45 - He's just another never ending drone of what every 12 year old want's to hear about cars. If you seriously think that BMW were STILL trying to get rid of the idea of the BMW Isetta in Europe in the 90's then think again my friend. BMW Isetta's were already looked upon as the coolest collectors item on the roads. Only 'Mercans try and hark on about the past and cling on to it as if their lives depended on it. I'm sure this man will tell you his father used to work in the cotton fields as a servant/slave. BMW cars were already a serious spoets car maker in the 60's. Mercedes was looked upon as a LUXURY car, NOT a sporty saloon. But all that has changed now when people like the Americans expect to buy: "one car does it all" sports saloon for 4 with extra space for 3 more at the back, with the handling of a two seater, a foldable roof and a great big growling V8 that does 50 miles to the gallon. Thats how you end up with the atrocities that are on the roads now.

We bought a M5 in Gibraltar in 1988. Drove it all over Europe for over 200,000 miles. Lots of 100+ MPH trips on the motorways. My girlfriend’s brother totaled it on the Elisabeth bridge. He claimed the brakes were “wrong” when he locked it up on black ice. Later it came out that the only other car he had ever driven was a Trabant.

To correct you both, the 300 SEL 6,3 came out in 1967 and was the first of the factory sports sedans, and it was a W109, long wheel base and air suspension chassies car. The 300 SEL 3,5 was next in 1969, 280 SE/L 3,5 in 1970 and the 300 SEL 4,5 together with the 280 SE/L 4,5 in 1971. They were all replaced with the W116 chassies cars in 1973 except for the US where the 108/109 was sold another model year, as 1973 year cars. The next beast of a sedan came mid 1975 when the W116, 450 SEL 6,9 was introduced.

You reminded me of good times and especially how to describe a big car. A big, friendly elephant. I hope to be like you if I get to your age. I'm only 43, but that doesn't matter. It's just a number. What matters is the people we end up being. It is a reflection of our lives with other people, kindness, and love. Thanks for reminding me brother. Never stop loving!
