Yes, I’d love to hear about olive tones. I feel that the olive skin tone doesn’t get talked about often because it makes the cool vs warm system more complicated. Fair olive skin tones are even harder to find information about.

I've been working in the jewelry business for many years now, and would like to share my thoughts on choosing gold or silver coloured jewelry. I don't think the colour theory works 100% for jewelry. For example you look amazing in both gold and silver, and sometimes I find gold suits your even more and I'll get to that. Some people look very obviously better in one than the other, then there's people who can wear both. I've seen some people with very clearly cold undertone (pink hue) but because their hair is blond, a light gold color just looks so much better on them. Note that there's different shades of gold depending on the karat, and the alloy put into the gold. Some 10 or 14kt gold are light yellow, whereas usually 18kt or higher would be a very rich yellow. Same with rose gold, some are so pink it looks almost like copper, and others are just slightly pinker than a regular yellow gold. So try different shades of gold, as one might suit you better than the other. I personally find, if you want the colour of the metal to suit you, go with your personality and general vibe. This is from years of experience and because I find the skin colour theory just doesn't work for many people when it comes to jewelry. First, jewelry only takes very little of the space on our body as supposed to clothing and other accessories, secondly gold or silver are metallic, and work differently than just a colour. For example, polished silver coloured jewelry without stones have a hue and shine that's like knives, very clean, sharp and cold, whereas gold is warm, rich soft, and luxurious. Going back to choosing the right metal, for instance I find that, because you have a very warm presence and personality, gold has this warm glow that compliment this aspect of you. And some people appear more cold and distant, who have more of a "ice queen" kind of aura, in this case the sharpness of silver would enhance this trait. Now this is just my theory and observation. I'm not saying it's right, just putting it out there to see if people find it helpful or not at all. And I'd like to hear what others think of this theory using themselves as an example.

Thank you for this information. Especially for mentioning the "ice queen" effect. I'm a light redhead - golden frackles and strawberry blond hair. So people always tell me I should wear gold. But I just hate anything gold. And it makes me look old and boring. I absolutely love anything cool toned like silver or steel. And since I'm deffinitely the "ice queen" personality, cool metals feel much more like "me".

Very educating you guys, You don’t know how much I get inspired by others ladies even in comment section, as you said , all explains a lot ,maybe the best way is to go out and start trying different jewelry on ourselves, from your writing I realized one I had 24k yellow gold which is very yellow,as I am warm skinned it looked too shiny and light on me, then I bought 18k yellow gold and Magic happened, it was less shiny and made my skin glow, also the silver I tried ,they have different colors, those polished lighter silver never suite me,then I start buying those worn out colors or antique silver jewelry instead or buy kind of mat silver color which is not as much shiny.

I think a video reviewing how to determine undertone would be wonderful....I am a 'neutral'...so my veins are neither green nor blue but somewhere in between but for years I was deemed a Winter because I, too, have Irish coloring so dark hair, light skin and dark eyes....I could not understand why I looked OK in gold or silver when I was told just to use silver/white gold.....a more detailed approach to truly finding your skin tone would be soooo very helpful...Big Hugs Angel....great job as always...

I have the same colouring as you. For years I thought I was warm but I am actually neutral with a tendency toward cool. I can wear all of the colours for a deep winter and some colours for a deep autumn. Usually, the brighter, more jeweled tones. I don’t look good in rusts, browns or beiges. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mary. Funny 😄 as I purchased an olive silk shirt from Everlane last year and it suits me well 😁😁. And typical cool deep winter colors do too - in the past I would never have purchased olive anything before I realized I was neutral not a full on winter 1. . Undertones are so much more important than I realized. Big hugs

Thank you for this comment! I have a mostly Irish background, and have been trying to determine my undertone for many years. I *think* I'm neutral, but my eyes are olive green, which causes me to lean warm. My skin is light and my hair is dark, and I can't find any obvious warmth or coolness in either. If I stand next to a very cool person, I look warm. If I stand next to a very warm person, I look cool. But there are people that say that you cannot be neutral. 🙄

MerriamStyle has great videos on “neutral” skintones. I thought I was neutral as well, but we all lean cool or warm slightly, even if you’re also olive skin-toned. It just won’t be as obvious as people with more “radiant” skin tones. You are probably cool and delicate or warm and delicate, meaning you will look better in softer, muted colors. I look okay in silver and gold. I look slightly better in silver so I assumed I was cool. But bright colors don’t look right on me. A better test is to try rose gold and gunmetal, since these are less bright and closer to neutral.

I got my colors wrong for a long time and now I'm fascinated with the subject and glad to see it addressed here. There are a lot of mistakes on the season charts for (natural) blonds and redheads. I have gray eyes, light blond hair with a little gold (warm? Not really) in it, and pale cool toned skin. Soft summer is correct for me, because there is little contrast between hair and complexion color depth (soft) and I have cool toned skin. Any bright colors/patterns make me look even more colorless beige than I already am and anything warm toned makes me look pale and sick. I love pretty jewel tones but they are not for me, sadly, and I have to stick with more muted colors. I'm convinced now after staring at lots of photos that there are no warm toned natural blonds. Blue eyed redheads are all cool I think. Brown eyed redheads with auburn hair are warm. I can imagine it's worse for brown hair/eye people to figure this out because there are so many colors of brown!
@dinahweisberg7504 жыл бұрын
Interesting...I am definitely a warm-toned natural darkish blonde, brown eyes. My mom has a lot of Mediterranean lineage, and my dad is more Scandinavian. Silver alone looks really dull on me, and gold looks much nicer against my skin. When you do a vein comparison mine are more on the green side.l
@susanholl59944 жыл бұрын
@@dinahweisberg750 I'm N Europe descent too. I think I'm confused about what is considered blond and what is brown so I googled it. "Dark blond" pulled up a bunch of images I had thought of as towards the medium side of brown so clearly I need to recalibrate!
@GiaTheSweetPotato4 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree! I am a natural blonde with pale skin and brown eyes, and I'm pretty sure I am a Soft Autumn (so I have neutral-warm undertones). I was light blonde as a child and have slowly turned dark golden blonde with age. In winter I look quite neutral, but I tan very easily and turn a bronzey yellow in summer, I don't turn pink like most cool toned blondes do. Both my hair and eyes have a rich golden glow in the sun. However my veins do appear slightly blue at my wrists and green everywhere else, which is very confusing to me! 😅😂
@susanholl59944 жыл бұрын
@@GiaTheSweetPotato Yea I'm wrong, thanks for opening my eyes. I thought what most people think of as dark blond was a shade of brown. Brown eyed blonds are probably warm. My hair is very light beigey blond, but not icy as my mom's platinum was.

Gia The Sweet Potato Same! My hair was light golden straw colored as a kid, even now it lightens up a lot naturally in the summer. Early in my marriage I was given a beautiful necklace of tricolor gold: yellow, white and rose. Since I wear that necklace frequently, it seems to coordinate well with any other metallic color. Yes, I would LOVE a video focused on olive skin tone, particularly fair/pale olive!! I have very pale olive freckled skin, with tinges of red because of how sensitive my skin is. My hair is medium brown with a few natural dark blond highlights, all of which has a reddish tinge in the sunlight. And my eyes are almost black. The resulting reddish/yellowish/greenish/grayish/freckled skin with brownish/blondish/reddish hair means I'm kind of ALL the colors. Which results in me usually feeling like I look good in NONE of the colors. Every article or video I watch on clothing or makeup advice for olive skin tone assumes my skin is darker and more golden, so none of the advice works for me. But neither does the advice for cool/neutral/warm skin tones. It's very frustrating!

A wonderful video and explanation about choosing the tone of jewellery. Like you, I also have an olive undertone and wear both white gold & platinum pieces and I have many yellow gold items that I love to wear. I would be interested in a video about undertones.

Thanks for this. Very helpful as I struggle with white gold vs gold as a gift choice. Your video gave me a clearer perspective.

I love you in silver. I’m very warm but I think silver is more casual so I chose it for both my watch and my first Chanel and I’m happy I did.

I like the 5 minute approach (if a topic can be adequately covered in that time). Like Losshe said right below this comment, there are tones of gold and even of silver, so we each should take that into account. I tend to agree with the assessment that many of us can wear both.... but now I will be more aware of the tone and polish of the metal as to whether it will work best. I would love an analysis of earring styles: stud, medium, round, dangle, chandelier, stick..... what is best for what face shape and hairstyle?

I have olive skin also. I mostly learned about it from watching your videos. I would be so grateful for more information. Thank you!

Thank you for making videos about Olive undertones. One of your previous about undertones helped me realize that I have olive undertones. I’ve been struggling to find resources addressing Olive undertones so please what more of your knowledge. 😀

If your sisters are willing, I would love to see the contrast in your skin tones - I find this to be so tricky, even with verbal explanations, I need the "visual" to really understand it. My daughter and I are both struggling with this, and I've even had a makeup sales clerk "give up" on mixing me a custom shade because she couldn't figure out my skin tone! So yes, lots to unpack in this topic!

You look way better in white/silver tone sparkly jewellery. You're right about that. I would recommend white gold for you!

In my teenage years, i always prefered silver over gold. But recently, i am all about the gold! The reason for that is probably the fact that i dyed my hair ginger (level 6 on a scale of lightness, just like my natural brown) and i feel like gold looks better with it. I assume my new hair looks natural with my complection since people often ask me if my hair is naturally this color. My skin truely has neutral undertones and is very pale. My eyes also have warm and cold tones, as they are warm light brown around the pupils and dark blue-ish on the outside. Sometimes they look green if i wear a green shirt. Recently I bought gold and dark olive green glasses, which suit my look. I am now on a hount for some gold earings and a gold watch. With all that being said: i feel like hair color plays the biggest role in my example.

Five minute Fridays, great idea! I am wondering if you can do a segment on wearing silk. Specifically, white silk blouses. I bought one from Everlane but returned it. Can you discuss how to wear them (cami underneath), what to style them with and some other places to purchase them?

That was so interesting. Would love to hear more about skin tones. Would like to learn how to pick the best skirt length for your height. I am 5’1”. I feel dumpy in midis. Thanks

How about platinum and white gold? I'm cool toned so I wear those instead of silver.

Similarly, I much prefer rose-gold and copper/"tan"-looking golds, rather than a shiny gold. (I'm warmish-toned.) Just adding onto your comment. You are right there's more than just silver/gold.

YES! Please do something for olive skin tones. I am struggling with this color issue, am I warm or cool tone? I am an olive skin tone with a high color contrast. I thought I was a dark winter but something else said I was a dark autumn. I am so confused.

Imo, gold makes you look more vibrant despite your coloring! But honestly you could pull both off :) I’m the opposite...I have very warm undertones, but for some reason I just gravitate to the “vibe” of silver more for my personal style, it’s weird.

it can be because your personality and style match the silver personality
