I never, EVER found the gold/silver test to be helpful in determining undertone, and this explains why. Even though there are plenty of colors that don't work for me, both gold and silver look equally good on me as a cool-leaning neutral, IMO. Honestly, I think that both gold and silver flatter pretty much everyone. It just depends on the vibe you're going for.

That’s because there are a bunch of golds and the finishes can change a lot! Brushed silver is much more tolerable for autumns and springs can work with very shiny silver, for example. But no cool or cool-neutral season will ever find a really brassy gold or bronze flattering at all, and some very warm people will just never find silver (or even iron) that looks nice on them.

That’s not quite how color analysis works, it depends on your skin undertone for the most part. I’m not sure how hair color temperature changes as it grays, but I would guess that it doesn’t switch from warm to cool. Gray hair can be warm or cool toned. Figuring out your skin undertone is harder for some than others, but it should not be different from when you were younger. If you feel that all colors looked good back then, you were/are likely a more neutral colored person (rather than leaning extremely cool or extremely warm).

Same. The kind of dainty, multi-layered jewelry, that has been fashionable these last couple of years, looks 'silly' on me. This has really confused me, because I'm fairly 'average sized' in both height and weight. So I knew, that it wasn't simply about body size vs jewelry size. Big, bold statement pieces, on the other hand...even fairly 'out there' stuff...it just suits me.

Wow this is THE BEST content I've seen on jewelry! And I think it makes a lot of sense from personal experience. I'm a Dark Autumn and I have some neutral gold jewelry but it looks so harmonious with my skin it almost disappears (also, kinda of dainty pieces). However, my antique silver jewelry stands out much more (which is an effect I want in jewelry) so I quite like wearing silver that's a bit darker. I do feel depth it's the most important characteristic in my season. The only kind of jewelry I feel it can be unflaterring on me are pearls (which is a shame since I like pearls a lot). They can look really starkly white against my warm olive skin (except if I go for rosé pearls) but I'm gonna wear them as statement, I guess lol Light blue stones and diamonds can be tricky as well.

The silver jewellery shown at 3:10 is called oxidised silver. These pieces of jewelry are designed to have texture, then are placed in a chemical bath for instant oxidations, and then the piece of jewelry is polished, so only the deepest parts stay black, creating interesting designs

I love that you’ve toned down the beep noises in the videos it makes it much easier to hear you and concentrate on what you are saying! This video is super helpful. I don’t know my color season but I suspect neutral-soft part of the color wheel. Whether it’s gold or silver isn’t as important to me as whether or not it’s a softer more matte metal, vs super shiny and bright and blingy. The sparkles that girls go crazy over seem to overpower me, but when I wear matte soft jewelry it doesn’t compete with me, and complements my skin more, like it’s absorbing the light rather than reflecting it.

Yes, I’m aware that rose gold is “supposed” to be the best metal for neutral or even neutral/olive skin tones, but I’ve found that isn’t true in my case. My skin tone is a medium neutral olive (leaning slightly warm…& I tan well), but rose gold is NOT flattering on me & I can’t wear ALL colors so some of these rules don’t really apply. I can wear both silver & gold-toned jewelry, but in-truth, a more muted or antiqued gold or bronze metal is much more flattering on me- & I actually like a more vibrant polish in a metal, rather than matte as it gives my skin some life.🤷

Jenn, this video is so helpful! I’ve been torn for the longest time about what metal suits me best. I had it in my head that because I’m fair, silver was my only option. Add to that my wedding set is platinum, so my type-A personality told me I could only be matchy-matchy and wear silver. Well, after I self-diagnosed myself as a soft autumn, it turns out it’s all in the tone. A soft, buttery 9 or 10 ct yellow gold is so flattering on me. I also really only look fresh and alive in a bright, white silver/platinum. So now here I am, mixing metals and loving it. Thank you so much for helping me gain some clarity xxx

This makes so much sense of my personal experience. I can wear gold, Silver, Rose gold, gem stones and pearls. The important thing is they had to be shiny. Some golds and silvers don't look quite right but usually it's because they're too mustard, greenish or dull. It's one of the many factors why I was confused about my season all my life. I thought I was a summer and should only wear silver, but cheap jewelry usually looks better when it's gold plated and doesn't fade as quickly as silver, so I have more gold in my collection. Of course now that I know I'm a bright winter I understand that coolness(silver) is not the most important aspect.

My skin is very white. But I tan with no problems and can get fairly brown, and yet yellow gold overwhelms me. I guess the low intensity of my eyes and hair are the cause of that? My hair, my eyes and my skin don't really have a huge contrast between them. I have a muddy hair color in that it's ash blonde with lots of dark auburn. My eyes are muddy because I have 3 colors in my eyes that are very dulled in color but they change color with whatever I wear. So any bright color is out of the question for me. If I wear yellow I look yellow all over like I'm jaundiced. It has to be a heavily muted yellow to look good against my skin. No metals look good on me if they're brightly colored or too darkly colored. So far the only metal I buy is stainless steel earrings. It has no brilliance to it and is a really toned down silver color. Rose gold looks awful on me, I think I'm too yellow to wear it. I love jewelry, but it's really hard to find some that is beautiful but not brilliant. Sterling silver is way too bright with my coloring, but oh my there are some wonderful pieces on Amazon I would love to wear. When my hair was darker, before the gray came in, I had more contrast and could wear more colors, but now ....the gray has lightened my hair somewhat and I seem to have less contrast to work with. It's very frustrating to find clothes with colors that don't make me look sick in some way. Pastels make me look washed out, dark colors do the same. Jeez!!

Because of watching your videos over the past month, I'm pretty sure I've come to find I'm an Olive skin tone, which I would have never ever considered without you. Even after all I learned in Cosmetology school (along with continued education courses), and with 15 years working in the Beauty industry; you were the one who enlightened me as to why, even though sometimes Neutral foundations and such would "work" on me, they still felt "off". Not to make this a whole novel, but I come from a family of natural redheads on my grandmother's side, but as a mixed-race person, I ended up with an Olive-leaning complexion; and I've always LOVED my mother's and grandmother's hair, but every time I try a "natural red" (either dye or lace-front), I just always turn directly into Princess Fiona. The red hair FIGHTS my complexion! It turns me visibly "green" (to my eyes, at least), so I'd LOVE a more in-depth analysis on Red hair, especially to see if Red hair is possible with Olive skin outside of the "Stop Sign" red or "Ruby reds" that are just a little too loud. P.S. Before anyone asks, yes, I've tried "99J" (if you know, you know), I still look green with 99J.

Ahhhhh this makes sense! I usually gravitate to silver because it always looks good on me, and it's more affordable. But I've always felt like gold looks fine on me too. Watching your videos, I've realized that colors being muted is what's more important than color temp for me. I'd say I'm borderline between summer and autumn, because a muted rust red looks amazing on me. Super saturated colors wash me out, even if they're "supposed" to work on me, so I leave those for my accessories. Doesn't stop me from wearing a ton of black though 😆

@shinny4070 Жыл бұрын
I’m also a bright winter and what I learned was that bright winters typically have a neutral skin colour even though the undertone tends to be cool. Rose gold, having some pink in it, is a neutral toned metal, as it’s a mix of cool pink and warm yellow. I can’t say that I know this for sure but it’s just something I picked up along the way.
@momoso143 Жыл бұрын
Could it be your undertone? Maybe there’s a subtle pinkish hue that is accentuated by the rose in the gold?
@minervarose7664 Жыл бұрын
I think as a Bright Winter, what's important is the brightness rather than the temperature. So though you technically are cool, you lean more neutral. As such, a shiny yellow or rose gold (warm but bright) flatters you more than a burnished silver (cool but muted). As a Bright Spring things are quite similar for me too. Technically am a warm season but lean more neutral and so can take a lot more coolness than many other warm seasons (for instance i can pull off polished silver jewellery much better than an Autumn or a Soft/ True Spring). On the other hand, dull finishes or super light colours don't look so good on me. So it's always silver with a chromium, polished finish over antique silver or a very whitish silver. Cut and polished gemstones over raw unpolished gems. Shiny yellow, rose or white gold over oxidized bronze jewellery. As a Bright Winter, am guessing it's similar for you!
@minervarose7664 Жыл бұрын
Also as to why gold looks ok as jewellery but not clothing - Jewellery typically takes up much less "visual space" than an entire clothing item. So as a neutral-cool season, you can take warm colours in small doses (i assume by gold you mean either yellow or rose gold, not white gold). But if you had a huge block of gold near your face, for instance, it would be too much. It's the same for me as Bright Spring (neutral-warm) silver earrings or chain looks great but not if i wore a silver evening gown. I mean i suppose it wouldn't look terrible if it was a bright silver, but it still wouldn't look the best on me (would be amazing on you though!)

Good points here. Mmm… there are different “shades” of gold and silver - You have to wear jewelry that harmonizes with ALL of your features. You may be warm-toned, but are you bright or soft? Are Dark or light? You have to pick a gold that compliments those features. E.g., I’m a dark autumn, that means I only LEAN warm. I have a medium chroma and medium to high contrast. I look best in gold but only gold that meets that criteria - google champagne gold, or vintage gold and that’s my best gold… it has to be bright, shiny and not at all dull or I will look dull. Hence I will not wear gold like - copper (it’s ruddy and dull), - brass (it’s low chroma and dull) - yellow gold (too warm) Same is true for silver. A deep winter may look stunning in platinum silver, but they will probably look plain in metal/gunmetal silver.

It’s so frustrating to be black and look way better in silver than in gold but everywhere tells me gold is my color…

Indian with very green veins and bloodless pale yet wheatish-brown complexion. I look gaudy and cheap in gold. It's only the silver or silver/oxidized jewellery that looks good on me. On the other hand, light colour clothes wash me out.

Or gold plated! But go for gold filled since it won't strip/tarnish as much as plated :)
