It amuses me that the likes of Timothy Dalton, Toby Stephens and Michael Fassbender are passing for unattractive in these adaptations.
@monmothma33587 жыл бұрын
I know they were trying to be very true to the book and include practically everything, but they *might* have considered leaving that one line out.. :)
@yvonnewood17 жыл бұрын
Zed Flower Dalton really doesn't fit the "not handsome" role.
@kirsteni.russell59036 жыл бұрын
Considering how short Zelah Clark is next to him, this Jane might not consider him handsome. The way she becomes interested in him to begin with is through her conversations with him--that's the way he appeals to her in the book as well as in this series.
@Morgana8886 жыл бұрын
You're right; especially when the novel has him as a tyrant. Fassbender shouldn't have attempted this part and it was horrible to have George C Scott do him in 1970. Susannah York was Jane? The only good part was that John Williams (Star Wars) did the music.

I am struck by the attention to detail in this version. In the book, Jane wears a "lilac gingham" dress the day after Rochester's proposal, and that is exactly what she's wearing in this scene. The dress as Brontë envisioned reflects Jane's liberation from her cold, solemn, friendless self, being so different from the usual black and grey that readers picture Jane in.
@Morgana8886 жыл бұрын
The dramatist stuck to every detail; however, the wardrobe mistress, Gill Hardie must have had Timothy wrapped around her little finger. She's the one who did the incredible costumes. His in particular because she had so much green to bring out those sparkling green emerald orbs.

But for the time period he was not. That version of "Tall Dark and Handsome" that we espouse now did not exist back then. Men were supposed to be slightly portly, blonde, pale and "foppish" to be attractive... and always smiling. Think of Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice as an example of what was considered really "hot" back then. Even in Gone With the Wind... Ashley was to be the "hot" one all pale and blonde.
@maineclayton24192 жыл бұрын
At that point, Jane considered Mr. Rochester as handsome but she chose not to admit it to him by joking that he's not. She was capable to crack a joke when she's in a good mood.

This is everything I wanted BBC's Pride & Prejudice to be minus the production value. Obviously it's two different stories and Rochester and Darcy are two different characters but still.
@zuzanka19814 жыл бұрын
Did you like the 2005 P&P then? Austen's characters behaving like they were written by one of the Brontës. Not my cup of tea but lots of people like this romanticized version.
@iwillstom4 жыл бұрын
@@zuzanka1981 Well, the only thing I did like was the freer expression of affection but I thought everything else about it was horrid. 1995 is really the only version for me, just wish it had a tinge more warmth between D&E than just looks.

Miss Ingram, is that YOU??
@gillianstapleton77414 жыл бұрын
Then the production team did their job correctly - Jane is supposed to be plain and dressed very simply. When she refers to her 'Quakerish' clothes, that doesn't mean they are poor quality or ugly, just that they are made with little or no adornment.
@monmothma3358 Жыл бұрын
Even this dress?? I love her clothes, except the dark colours, because of the silhouette. The 1840s silhouette is very beautiful and flattering. I read somewhere that while this part of JE actually takes place in the 1830s, they usually move the adaptations forward a decade because the fashion is prettier.
@barbarav40466 ай бұрын
To me, the fact she looks older than him is more disturbing because no way she could pass as an 18 yr old - even considering they looked older then
