I tried Microsoft’s Hololens at a museum in Seattle and it was mind blowing. The exhibit was a scale model of a monastery built by medieval monks. The AR layered information based where you were looking, and you followed a sphere who was narrating to you. It was a really neat way to experience an artifact, and I think they should be integrated into more exhibits. The FOV was really bad, like standing 6 feet away from a window which allowed you to see the AR layer, and a sharp transition to the real world after that. Your point about lighting was absolutely right. The environment was extremely homogeneously lit, and it would only work in a really even environment.

In architecture an design there is still development on going for AR. I know some design studios that use AR technology as a replacement of physical models since it allows to view projects in different phases of design and see different proposals in a "3D" environment. Microsoft Hololens are still quite popular in both design and construction environments.

AR will require good eye tracking and hand tracking. The big dataset that this creates is too valuable to the corporations looking to make AI driven robots. The ability of tracking what people are exactly looking at (and for how long) is way too valuable to advertising companies. AR headsets will continue to be developed.
@torreong91
@torreong91 2 жыл бұрын
There's eye tracking devices already. They get used for flight sims. The quest 2 has hand tracking, and it has a "AR" mode. It takes the camera feed and overlays the menus and windows on top. I would argue the quest is the most popular "AR" headset right now.

Here's a practical user for AR that I'd like: Compress the world around me until it's small enough for my eyes to see all of it so I can have 360° vision and calibrate it so that it stays level regardless of my orientation so I can flip without effectively going blind for half a second. (I realize this would mean it would have to have cameras on all angles and I'd still have a blind spot consisting of my own body, but it would still be better than my usual vision (well assuming it was fast enough.))

I love the idea of AR, but to me it seems to have a lot of problems that are going to take way longer to solve than a lot of people want to face. The magic leap people obviously way over hyped themselves in what they could accomplish in five or ten years. I wouldn't be surprised if in five, even eight years, we're still waiting for those demo videos to happen they all put out in the mid 2010s, like the whale jumping out of a high school gym floor. I remember when magic leap first hit the news, and here we are almost ten years later.

I had pretty high hopes for this kind of tech to find a place on the consumer market for more practical reasons - I have prosopagnosia, and was very interested in the possibility of a discrete hud to help identify people in my online contacts, where I am not able to recognize many people out of specific contexts. Even local maps and directions to a requested location would be super helpful, but not to the extent of helping with face blindness.

I've always considered AR to be something that you wouldn't necessarily wear but something that could be integrated into various devices to make it useful. I could easily see a car with a processor in the engine and using an AR windshield to display various pieces of information around the edges of the windshield for easy visual reference without having to glance down at one of the gauges or consoles. Perhaps across the top of the windshield you would have a digital clock as well as the street name you are on and some GPS information such as when to turn while on the side you might have your current speed, your gas gauge, as well as a camera window showing what's to the left of you as a combination of side mirror and blind spot prevention while keeping the middle of the windshield clear to ensure safe driving.
@tommykarrick9130

My personal guess for at least the start of widespread AR is as a feature on VR headsets. Most new headsets are using inside out tracking with cameras all over them, and if the cameras are high enough quality, theoretically, developers could use the pass through function or those headsets to develop consumer AR experiences that aren’t locked behind a massive price wall, because it’s built right into the consumer VR headset that they already own.

You don't necessarily need cameras for AR. Transparent displays are in fact a thing, even for LCD screens, but they're actually good when made using OLED or MicroLED pixels. The major benefit of cameras is simply that it helps with integrating the virtual layer into the environment, but for simpler forms of AR (e.g. HUDs), they're not strictly necessary. Even for more complex stuff, like being able to walk around a stationary 3D model, that could be done with onboard motion sensors in theory.

To get rid of the lighting problem, you could just have your whole house mapped with small lidar sensors on the top of each room constantly mapping your house, sending it to a the wireless hub. Then have a pair of glasses that tracked your location and field of view receive the optical signal... That way your eye device doesn't have to do any computing work and can be thin and light. It wouldn't work anywhere else but your house, but it would definitely look as realistic as the concept videos...

Lot of potential to have fun with such technology, give it another 20-50 years and this might even be a thing people are used to already, but I would imagine that most of the uses will be for leisure activities such as gaming, but only time will tell. Love this channel, and all of the trippy, speculative stuff our noble host "Tyler, of Knowledge Hub" shares, such fascinating thoughts and presented in such a pleasantly palatable way. Augmented reality is a lot harder than VR. I don’t know why people thought that would be able to happen now.. I mean, we can make some stuff appear, like those 3D dolls, but we’re not at the point where you can just get a TV added to your room or something. Might be possible eventually, but it requires a lot more power and tech than VR or self driving cards, plus most homes are cluttered and would be hard to predict.

One might've as well put up a "VR: A Failed Promise" in 2010. We don't have suitable hardware yet, that's it. As for the software, Machine Learning explosion in recent year... solves a whole lot. If we had proper hardware, we'd've had filters to change reality to look like anime or whatever in a week. Ora day. Utility stuff? We can spawn screens whenever, that's trivial - and it's most of the utility. If hardware provides good field of view, eye tracking (to replace mouse cursor) - it's a killer product. It basically replaces all other computing devices (along with the cloud). Lots of people would buy it at $5K even.

I seem to remember in the early 2010s having an app on my iPhone that was basic AR, in the it used the camera and basically overlaid information as to which direction nearby tube lines were. I didn't use it much, but it was interesting. One thing not mentioned though and that has limited this kind of app is that using the camera and screen in this way on a smartphone basically killed the battery life. Without fixing that this just won't work on a phone. Also there needs to be a problem that only AR could fix. Without this it won't sell in huge numbers and will remain just a gimmick.

like today? We have people buying facebook headsets, sharing intimate life details on social media broadcast to everyone. And the NSA has still been doing their shit combined with the five eyes for two decades. Snowden only slowed that part down slightly. Unless there is a major cultural push away from this nonsense it will inevitably get to the point of mandatory ar systems in everyone who still wants to participate in societies lives.

I think the US Military is currently working on AR headsets, and the Israeli military developed AR scopes in, like, 2015; they're just too expensive to deploy en masse. The tech is there, it's just not civilian tech (like just about anything, honestly). Also, Iowa State University has an AR room in the Aerospace Engineering building that works totally different from this stuff. It's a chamber that has screens on all 6 surfaces that change their display based on the position of the user in the room who wears polarized glasses. It takes a building-sized computer, though.

Have you seen the Mario Kart ride at Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Japan? It's an interesting use of the technology. Since it overlays elements onto a predetermined ride path with lighting information baked in it's able to accomplish quite a bit, but still has a ways to go.

AR was one of the few Future techs I was really hoping would become the miracle we were promised. I really thought the Google Glasses idea would of been a beginning to the dream but wasn't adopted.

Google glass I would not even consider not even real ar, as it could not show images over the real world. Only notifications in the tiny corner of your vision. The thing it is most comparable to today is a smart watch. Sony launch their first smart watch for the xperia phone in 2012, the pebble in 2013, and the Samsung galaxy gear in 2014. All of those served the same purpose as google glass in 2014. This is not even accounting for the Apple Watch, which was massively popular and came out in 2015.

Whimsu... the second channel is called Whimsu. Why won’t you just say it?? Is KZbin against it? Did you have a bet with your brother that you could get folks to go there without saying the name?? Or are you just trying to get us to click links instead of searching for it by name??? Or ???? L. O. L. Love your content so I guess I’ll go check it out ... if sharky who doesn’t know we’re in a commercial says it’s ok ... 🤓

I earnestly think that AR will never be fully integrated into our lives. Humans have what appears to be an innate need for tactile feedback. Watch a car review and you will find people evaluating the tactile feedback of the buttons, knobs, steering, brakes, accelerator, etc. The same thing holds true in any other field. How something feels to manipulate evokes a response from users. AR largely eliminates that tactile feedback to which I think average people will not acclimate. It will probably get very good, but it will most likely be niche forever.

I had this idea once, that seemed amazing, but I knew there had to be a reason this thing didn't exist. Because if I thought of it then that means thousands of others have had the same idea. I thought, what if they combined laser tag with AR? If they built special rooms and had sensors around them and they had special glasses or whatever technology is needed for it to work. You could make the room look more interesting and you could have whatever you wanted as enemies and there's a lot that could be done. But then a realized how much that whole thing would require. And maybe in the future major theme parks could do something similar to this... but it would not be cheap or easy to pull off
