In grade school, we might learn history in class and think of it as a straightforward recitation of facts and dates. Dr. Jade McGlynn however, explains that history’s stakes are high-shaping the collective memories and national narratives that can prepare a nation for great trials and even conflict.
McGlynn is an author and Research Fellow at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. Her research focuses on Russia’s war against Ukraine since 2014, propaganda, memory politics, and state-society relations in Russia. Her newest books include, “Russia’s War,” was released in March 2023 and explains why Russians support the war on Ukraine. “Memory Makers: The Politics of the Past in Putin’s Russia,” released in June 2023, discusses how the Kremlin rebuilt a mythical past to justify a militant present. Both books are based on over a decade of research into Russian politics of memory and propaganda, including McGlynn’s doctoral research she completed at the University of Oxford. You can find her journalism and expert commentary on all things Russia in a wide variety of international media outlets, from CNN to The Times. She is a frequent contributor to BBC, Deutsche Welle, The Telegraph and The Spectator. This is in addition to her academic work at King’s College London and her policy work with New Diplomacy Project and CSIS. McGlynn is often engaged as a public speaker and to consult on issues of foreign policy, diplomacy and defense relating to Russia and Ukraine by governments and organizations in the United Kingdom, the U.S., and beyond.

This video of the psychology of the russians makes me think of something good I have read recently, and that is Peggy Noonan's piece on War and Peace in the NY Times this week.

LMAO, there is a lot of insanity in the world, but surely citing Peggy fucking Noonan talking psychobabble about a nation takes the cake.

Quite a nice example of Western mythmaking on Russian history. =) "Ivan the 3rd was a hier to Kievan Rus dynasty..." Well, it's actually true, but not a complete truth. There was no such state as Kievan Rus. It's just a name of time period in Russian history, when the capitol of the state was in Kiev. Before, the Novgorod was a capitol and a bit erlier - Ladoga was (near present St.Petersburg). And the Rurik dynasty, as a ruler of Rus (Russia), came from Ladoga, not the Kiev. So, the Ivan the III was from Rurik dynasy. And his brunch of dynasty (Moscow) was the only one, that liberated it's lands from occupation of Tatar-Mongol yoke and, more over, conquered lands of yoke (Kazan, Sibiria and Krimea). While other brunches of Rurik dynasty did not keep their sovereignty - came under the rule of Poland or disappeared. The Rus was reassembled after Tatar-Mongol yoke by Moscow and it became a Russian Kingdom. And there were no other lands and states, which could name themselves Rus.

Wrong. Moscow was subordinated to the Crimean Khanat till the beginning of the 17th century. Then, Lithuanian dukes liberated Southern and Western Rus' from Mongolis.

And that the girl Mr.Beast became a scientist and studied our history?)) Laughed heartily, Putin is to blame for everything)My God))They didn't understand anything) In Russia, we laugh every time we see another suspicious historian, journalist or political expert who thinks he understands us) Lady girl, it would be better if you continued blowing up cars and advertising chocolates than trying to figure out our history)

Please recall that she’s explaining russian history as seen from the West. I’ve seen russian historians try to explain the mindset of Westerners to other russians, and I can assure you it is completely absurd as seen from here.

The tartars are a minority in Russia who for centuries have been beaten up to submission. Some, as we can see here, reduced to greater submission than others. Good luck to all tartars and all other Russian minorities.

Western neonazis and neofascists more or less all of them support the Kremlin dictatorship, but the support among Russian citizens are constantly decreasing. Nowdays probably a fifth or less of the Russian people support mr Putler.
