they were never businessmen. They were people loyal to putin that he gave billions in govt contracts to and then sent them out to cause trouble. The sochi olympics cost russian taxpayers 60 billion dollars that all went to 5 oligarchs. The head of the wagner group was given govt contracts worth hundreds of millions a year to provide food services to all the schools and universities in moscow and St petersburg. Then a single oligarch goes to moldova and completely buys a bunch of politicians, same with georgia and even ukraine. The oligarchs just act as a middleman that allows Putin to own poorer countries, using secondhand russian money. In 2014 ukraine overthrew the puppet of a russian oligarch which is what started this whole mess.

Excellent analysis as always from McGlynn. One issue is what is Russian? They are a country that defeated the Mongols because they finally had the musket imported from the West. Their Religion and Politics were imported, the fact that they have colleges, hospitals and a navy is thanks to Peter the Great who went West and imported these concepts - their technology is all from the West! Even Borscht is Ukrainian!
