That's exactly what i thought it's giving summer fling I just watched the series " The Summer i turned pretty" and it fits perfectly. It has summer, a love triangle & everything😭😂 Personally, it reminds me of my situationship. He was never mine cuz he didn't want to commit, and i knew that to him, we will always be "just friends" despite him acting differently, but i stayed and played along. "Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all" After a long time i had to end it, i established some boundaries & things got weird between us, i was devastated & i felt like i was losing him but at the same time felt like i don't have the right to feel this way "Cause you weren't mine to lose"

I know I'm a year late but here's an analysis the popped into my head after I watched urs and listened again to the song. Notice how because it was a summer fling, the only thing she's holding onto, or the only memory she had was meeting him behind the mall etc. It shows in the lyrics because it's all repetitive that she can't say anything else because that's all she got. (Meanwhile in cardigan which was Betty's perspective, idk but the lyrics were a lot. It's more wordy compared to august where it was few n repetitive (?)) Might be a reach but yeah lol

i don't think it's a reach at all, i totally agree with what you're saying!! 😊 this protagonist has so little to truly hold on to, the memories are limited bc of: a) the circumstances this took place in (with james being a cheater

Thanks for another evaluation, I could listen to you for hours for your thoughts on this album. Like you said I believe there are more than the "3" songs for the lovers triangle. And I believe there are more twist than meets the eye. I believe (from a couple of the songs, that I don't want to express now as I want to hear your evaluation) that Betty has a dark road of her own to climb😔

Oh I never realised the second time it was august SIPPED away! So glad you pointed that out! SO in my feels for the instrumental part - it is very dream like. So much Jack Antonoff production vibes in this song.. like you say especially with the ' vroom'.

why do i never hear anyone talk about the fact that the title august is all lower case indicating it could be the month or a name. "cause IT was never mine" and "cause YOU were never mine" she could literally be talking about the month and a guy named august its so complex thats why i love it sm

Subscribed!! Love your work ❤️‍🔥 Would like to note that sea water/ salt leads to corrosion so maybe august girl was reminiscing the rusty door at James’ beach hut/summer getaway place. Since this is a view from the outside it shows how eager she was, knocking, getting there early, waiting to see him. “Are you sure” (other than James asking her if she wanted to do this *thing* she’s never done before 😉) could also refer to august girl asking him if he’s sure about being here with her when she knows he has Betty, and her saying I’ve never been attracted to/ “been with” someone who ..*wasn’t single*
