Duuuuude, you should have a segment in one of your end of the year videos where you do an "In Memory of" for all the books you dnf'd. I'm imagining black and white slow motion clips of you holding up the books with the title of the book on the screen and how many pages you read out of the total page count. Sad piano music too of course.

I'm glad you're getting over.the slump. This year has just been hard all around. I think this may be the first time our opinions on books have diverged so much. I loved Leviathan Wakes. My favorite book of this month is actually Nemesis Games which is book 5 in the series. I love the tv show as well . I also really liked Children of Ruin even though it was similar to the first I liked the octopodes and the thing with Kern enough to overshadow the iffy end. 2001 was weird to me too so we still have that in common. :)

I definitely know what you mean about the Wayward Children series. I haven't loved any of them but they have enough story to want you to try the next one. At least they are pretty short so they are worth the read. I didn't even know another book was coming out, I will probably pick it up 🤣

I may be biased because most of my favorite movies are older, but 2001: A Space Odyssey movie is very much worth watching. Even just for how visually stunning it is. There likely will never be a modern adaptation of it because the film is widely regarded as a masterpiece. Any modern adaptation will likely set itself up for comparison and thus failure.

I'm curious what you'll think about The Expanse. I watched the series first because everyone told me how great it was. But I really had a hard time getting into it because I didn't care for the characters at all. This only changed at the beginning of season 2 (episode 3 or 4 I think) but then I fell hard for the story and the characters. It was only after season 3 that I read Leviathan Wakes and I actually liked it a lot (because it gave more insight in some of the things I was confused by in the show). I guess it was good to read it after I fell in love with the characters in the show (although my favourite show character doesn't even appear in the book).

I actually watched the Expanse first and then read Leviathan Wakes and loved it!! Book 2 has two really cool female characters as POVs and the Expanse actually brings one of them into season 1 which I really enjoyed (though I'd warn that the first two/three episodes of season 1 are a little confusing and also kind of try too hard to be edgy but then it really settles into something good). I'm usually one of the people cheering you on when you point out ridiculous quotes (because tbh classic scifi has so many of them) but for this one I think it's probably from Miller's POV, and, well, he's kind of a loser with a miserable life, so it fits him lol

Since you like magic schools you might want to check out Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor. It's not a traditional magic school by any means but a cool story (duology) nonetheless. Also reading Thick by Tressie McMillan Cottom, trying to finish Voyage of the Basilisk by Marie Brennan (seems I've been reading this for at least a year, lol). Thanks for sharing!
@bassholic7054 жыл бұрын
Haven't read the books but I've watched the whole tv series of The Expanse and loved it. I think what really appeals to people is that this sci-fi world is the most believable yet. The technologies you see in it are much closer to what might happen than Star Trek for example. As far as "the quote" it might be because it's from the POV of Miller, and he's pretty much the "seedy detective" type? Not sure though lol.
@amivanzyl88764 жыл бұрын
I thought the same! Miller is an intentional cliché and that sounded like the type of thing he'd say. That doesn't mean I'm into it... I feel like the world would not have been any poorer if they'd just cut that sentence 🤢 The TV show is incredible, how do they end every single episode in such a satisfying yet intriguing way? Without resorting to cheap cliffhangers? So impressed.
@pamelatarajcak56344 жыл бұрын
I had watched the Expanse series before reading the books, and book 1 was disappointing to me too, because they had included a character in the first season who didn't show up until book two, and she was my favorite character. So deflating. Technically I only have three books on my pile of shame and I completed one this month, Vanity Fair, a British classic lit book. I loved it. I wasn't surprised though. I loved it when I put it down, but I was in college at the time and got too busy to read it.

I don't think that the love interest in "The Name of the Wind" was written in the way that readers should care too much. At least I did get the feeling that's sort of done on purpose. Yes, there's one, but it makes sense that a young boy has a crush on someone, but this someone doesn't have to be too important, because there're other more important things to the story. It's not the typical setting of the romance, but that's why I actually really liked it. It felt genuine to me and I don't think that one book should strongly focus on everything that story can provide. :)

Methinks you put off CoR for more than a year because you subconsciously knew all along it was going to be a disappointing read. For the 2001 movie, maybe you might have been thinking of Interstellar from 2014? It has a few Easter egg references to Space Odyssey. Definitely worth a watch regardless if you haven't done so already though a word of warning it does require you to look at Matt Damon's face.

I’m currently finishing up Darkdawn and hating every moment of it. I’m actually really surprised how much you liked this series, given how problematic I’m finding it from a feminist perspective. Yeah, that line from Leviathan Wakes isn’t great, but that series is filled with amazing, actualized, nuanced female characters (full disclosure: this opinion is based on my knowledge and love of the TV series; I’ve yet to read the books). It’s far more troubling for me when a supposedly “bad ass” female character is really just a sex object in disguise - Mia isn’t a real person; she’s the fantasy equivalent of the “cool girl” (as described in Gone Girl). Not to mention the extremely male gazey-ness with which Mia’s relationship is viewed.
@missburn4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I don't ever intend on reading Nevernight but I have never heard anyone critique it like you do, most people seem to think it is super feminist. But often times it seems like a "feminist book" is all about a female character being "badass" and violent. What you critique here about male gaze is rarely something I see pointed out in reviews. A lot of feminist fantasy books seem very superficial in their supposed feminism. But again, specifically Nevernight I have not read.
