This is how You Lose the Time War is one of my favorite books from this year! It is really confusing (I actually read it twice, and the second read helped), but I don't read much sci-fi, so I was more interested in the characters. They both stole my heart, and the letters they wrote each other were so beautiful and so filled with emotions that I really connected to. I liked the creative ways they wrote/destroyed the letters, and all of the writing is gorgeous. I also really like that there's not a huge focus on the fact that it's two women-of course, we need stories about discovering sexuality and accepting it and such, and it's also nice to read something that's simply a love story, and the two people happen to be women.

Mari It’s a slow start for sure! It’s my favorite series, but even I struggled through the first half because I found it a bit slow and repetitive-but trust me, if you can stick with it, by the end it’s so worth it! Sanderson is a master at great endings. Just keep in mind that this is a 10 book series and a lot of groundwork and worldbuilding needs to be done before the epicness can truly begin! :)

That whole thing about Mark Lawrence is disappointing to say the least. I was looking forward to reading his books after you talked so much about them. This is just my opinion, but hear me out: just because he is what he is, I don't think you should force yourself to stop loving his work since you've enjoyed it so much. Sometimes it's hard to separate the work from the author which I completely understand. I don't think you should make yourself sad by depriving yourself of a story and world you enjoy to this extent so let me recommend an alternative: buy the books used! I personally buy most of my books from a website called betterworldbooks. They are great and also donate a book for each book sold! I personally always look up his books there to catch them when they're in stock since I do not wish to support him directly (or other authors). I understand tho that some people might not be ok doing this for different reasons and that's ok! Just wanted to share my opinion and offer a solution 😊

In my mind when I’m reading books like the Nickel Boys I rate them based on importance/impact/how well it taught me about that topic or time in history ect more so than “enjoyment”. Maybe that would help you feel less weird giving difficult books 5 stars? 🤷♀️ I read This is how you loose the time war and Loved it!! I went in totally blind though, didn’t know it was a romance and so watching that relationship develop was really sweet.

This Is How You Lose the Time War ticked so many boxses for me, so I very much loved it. I love wlw relationships and epic love stories and I've come to realize that I love when letters are used to tell the story. The book did also so many things right. If it would've been any longer, the confusion would've just gone on and on and it'd have dragged the story and decreased enjoyment. The writing style was also a hit for me (I just love pretty sentences). The only thing that I knew could be a problem was the time travel itself (in general I hate time travel) but it turned out to be just the type of time travel that I enjoy. I feel like this is the type of book that will survive many rereads amd may actually just get better with time.

I read VE Schwabs twitter, and it made reference to the something said in the past. He explained it, and I am tired of everyone expecting everyone to be perfect. And before everyone goes off on me, I was the victim of child molestation for five years at the age of five to ten. I was sexually assaulted again at 12. I have been through therapy, and the comments people make at different stages in their lives are frequently due to immaturity. He apologized about not setting the record straight. We don’t know the man personally, so I am going to give him grace until I know otherwise. Let’s see current comments. I had really horrible things happen to me, so people’s stupid comments don’t change who I am. As the Lakota say, “Did their comments turn you into those things they called you? No, You cannot forget what they said any more than you cannot feel the wind. But if you learn to let the wind blow through you, you will take away its power to blow you down. If you let words pass through you, without letting them catch on your anger or pride, you will not feel them.” Why can’t we all stop giving people’s words so much power and just ignore the stupid things they say. I am sure at some point I hope people ignore my stupid and incomplete thoughts. I am only human.

I am sorry Emily but I disagree with you (do not happen often). I do not think that we as readers and women should be that sensitive and jump to every word said on twitter. I know - because I follow you for a really long time - that it is one of your favourite series, and I have read it because of you, and also loving it! In my small opinion don't let this thing - which is not that big of a harm I think - ruin one of your favurite book! I will not let it myself. And I consider myself a feminist as well. I think people have a beef with 'female' because it's a cold, scientific term usually used for animals, and not human women, which could lead to 'othering' women especially by a male author (see what I did there, it's ok as an adjective, but not a noun). BUT if you are in the military, you are VERY used to hearing 'male' and 'female' nouns for humans...so it totally depends on the type of exposure or the context of the comments.

I am so disappointed with Mark Lawrence that I couldn't continue to read Holy Sister and stopped half way through.

Why is saying females wrong? I say "males" all the time. Maybe I'm missing something as English isn't my first language? But I'm genuinely curious...

Red white and royal blue was meh for me. I just couldn't believe in their love. I totally get that characters wanted to bang each other all the time, but why they loved one another - I had no idea. + I wish enemies to lovers part was much longer. I totally lost any interest in the story right when the guys started dating. Disappointing...

What happened with Mark Lawrence? (I'm not on Twitter) Can you give more information, I want to decide if I continue to support him also. All I know about his personnel life is that he takes care of an handicaped child.

Just finished Holy Sister and I'm glad to hear you raise these concerns with him before I bought The Girl and the Stars. So gross and disheartening to see that kind of language being used.

Having your tweet mentioned in one of your favourite booktubers videos 😊🥰 but it being a tweet full of information causing immeasurable disappointment 👎🏼. I’m also in the difficult place of loving Book of the Ancestor but nevertheless feeling slightly nauseated whenever I see his name.

BookswithEmilyFox it was disappointing more than anything. And it really was telling that he decided to keep Kate Elliot, a true veteran of the fantasy genre, tagged in on the conversation. He really does not respect anyone who isn’t a cishetero white man.

I always wondered why You like Red Sister so much since You find such a displeasure in reading anything that is even remotely sexist. I found that book to be very questionable. For sure that author can't write young female character. For me it was a mess I also felt kind of uneasy while reading it.

I HATED this is how you lose the time war. HATED. I cant tell you what happened to save my fucking life. BUT I'm autistic so if it's too whimsical or weird or whatever my brain jsut rots

i don't see you throwing away J K Rowling books. so why would you throw away Mark Lawrence's books? can't you see that the shaming and cancelling of authors based on every little thing they say can change how they write books? you don't have to agree with everything the author ever said. people are different and sometimes have different opinions. if you like the book that's all that matters.

I did remove them from my main shelves yes. Other books by her I haven’t read won’t be read. Same exact treatment.
