After Jesus and the Apostles, perhaps no one in the first thousand years of church history had such a formative influence on Christian thinking as Augustine. In this message, R.C. Sproul considers the theological and philosophical achievements of this intellectual giant.

AMAZING!! Thank you so much for making the entire series available! I started watching this in 1998 and, unfortunately, was only able to watch about 7 episodes before I moved to a different state. I look forward to watching the entire series.

Thank you to those posting these vids. Love R.C. and while he made it home, he left a big hole on earth. I watch John MacArthur and Steven Lawson age - and the tears appear - these men are such true Godly preachers - pray for just as strong preachers coming up.

Avoiding skepticism and rising to certainty……..is a desire of the flesh. “You shall not certainly die”
@person6768

Nice strawman would be interesting if he didn't make it clear someone is right. You really missed the whole point. Two men, one says it's raining the other says it isn't someone's right. The whole thing was about sensory and rational perception not there isn't certainty and even in this he and Augustine aren't saying there's no certainty. You literally took a part of the conversation cut it to a sentence and heard what you want. This is so much more ironic then you even understand.

It is an explanation which remains a formal belief of the mind. In other words, if I do not believe in God and his creation, we start again from the beginning, at the level of the sensory perception of reality which is incapable of perceiving things beyond the senses... This becomes a vicious form of understanding whatever that is ... One believes this ... The other believes that ...

Great lecture by Saint Sproul. Why do we die? How do we live? The science/reason perspective says we die because of disease or injury. We live by following the cures discovered by science/ reason. The New Age perspective says you die because of negative karma or energy or bad thoughts. New Age says we live by conjuring up good karma, energy and thoughts. The God of the Bible perspective says we die because Adam listened to his wife and ate of the forbidden fruit. The God of the Bible says we live by the grace of God in choosing us to believe in the atonement for sin made by His Son. Only the God of the Bible perspective has solved the problem.

You know all this, yet in other comments you slander him and relentlessly try to get Christians to stop going to church. Horrifying.

@Yesica1993 I criticize RC because I am not a cult follower. He is a Saint but not perfect. Going to church as a building is not possible because the Church is the body of believers. Go to a building all you want. It's just not a church according to the Bible. We mostly do agree.

Wasn’t Augustine very much influenced by Plato in his hermeneutic? The Alexandrian school had an affect but arguably we derive amillenialism from a platonic root.

95% of John Calvin‘s theology, matches identical with Augusta, who was previous before out. You may not know exactly what your truly saying if somebody is a Calvinist they are also in Augustinian to be precise. Everything Calvin believed truly comes from theology which is biblical theology they are both very very, devout scripture in scripture along these men are great great great men that have went before us who took the word of God for exactly what it is, and had no care for what a man thought of them. Instead, they wanted to fleas God these men should be looked up to in a sense to learn fromto read about if you were speaking on theology matter they’re almost identical

@@JakkWagon curious what is your evidence that augustine and Calvin didn’t go with scripture because they actually sided with scripture in every single council or event in argumentation that they had they were on the side of Gods word, I would suggest digging into church history and reading councils and creeds and what has came to pass; they both are great theologians whom had burning desire for the word of God to serve God in live better than 99% of Christians today these are in far far far ahead of you and I we need 2 understand what the word of God has to say just as they have, they went to fight for the word of God we should respect these men we can sit back and argue over a screen type out recklessly and have no worry. Please look into church history and understand what your saying

Shame. Guy introduces Gnosticism via his manichean ideas. Reject him and Calvin. Know God more truly.
