so many beautiful parables in these confessions. i find the beginning of chapter 12 particularly striking: "oh good lord when you look down upon me as i bend at the knee and hip, to receive thine good graces... and my eyes shall fall upon my reflection in the spittoon as i've bent over like a bovine in repose, waiting for the [grace] of the lord, to wash upon me and dry out my sins"

This is a great start, but I encourage you to go further. Catholicism is a steppingstone to Christianity, but it is not Christianity but you must pick up a Bible and read it to understand what I’m saying. I was born into a Catholic family and raised Catholic and it wasn’t until I was in my late 20s and started reading a Bible that I realized Catholicism is not Christianity at all. It is, the Roman Catholic Church. I won’t get into details, but I will just say this pick up a Bible and say a prayer to God to fill you with discernment and to guide you where he needs you and just start reading and your eyes will open just put it all in God‘s hands, and he will get to work on you. Don’t say the Catholic Church is a bad thing because I was raised in a Catholic family and it is what brought me to Christ but it is the reading of the Bible that made me realize I couldn’t stop it Catholicism because that’s not really Christianity. it is the Catholic Church controlling people telling them that it is Christianity as long as they do what the Catholic Church says, but the Catholic churches monstrosity and would probably disgust Jesus for how it has misinformed and misslead how many people to a parallel path to Christianity that looks like Christianity to anyone who’s never walked the path of Christianity so please continue seeking God and continue your journey, but trusting God and read your Bible. Jesus came to abolish religion, and when he said “it is finished” he absolutely meant it. Christianity is a deeply personal relationship with Jesus there should be no church in between you and Jesus. The church is supposed to be like a community and a family that you follow Jesus with it is not a power structure or some form of leadership to substitute for Jesus. And it is blasphemous for Catholic priest to tell people that they can forgive their sins when only God and the blood of Christ can forgive sin. I could go on an exposé about the practice of blast for you in the Catholic Church, but I will just encourage you to pick up a Bible and read it yourself and look into why the Catholic Church is not considered Christian by so many but I’m not trying to show you from your journey. You are off to a great start if it encourages you to pick up a Bible. Put your faith in God not the catholic church.

You can tell he was a really great orator and writer. Roman North Africa produced some very significant figures, Carthage was a really important city. Its pretty amazing how well it reads from 1600 years ago, though the classical world is known to have produced some excellent works, Plato's Republic also reads very fluidly. He's very hard on himself in the book, the last part as well I got really into, on the more philosophical questions and why he doesnt believe on a literal 7 day creation. Augustine understood christianity extremly well I think and his influence has been immense. It also marks a very important time with the ending of the classical world and the start of the early middle ages. There was a lot of chaos and upheaval towards the end but Augustine argued that yes it was true, but it would be heaven that would be the ultimate salvation.

Nice that you have set up this channel! I was learning for my exam for philosophy where I have to analyse the first book of Augustine’s' Confessions. After searching for a book summary on KZbin, I came across your channel. Although I haven't found deep analysis material about core points, I have been inspired by your honest opinion and experience of the book. I also decided to actually reread the first book and make notes myself after watching your video. As a Catholic myself, I directly subscribed to your channel after having read your mission statement. I saw some video covers of yours discussing books that I am interested in reading. I especially like the idea of an academic student, and a Catholic, who reviews interesting books in honesty and understanding. Most channels that I watch, such as Pints with Aquinas, already speak out of knowledge. Therefore, it is good to have a student also speaking about these topics from their personal perspective.

I think his expressions revealed a form of confession in literature, where he was under a lot of pressure obviously to prove his Christianity, but at the same time the secular nature of Rome's collapse; he merged the classical styles with his teaching, his summary is found in the theology of the church today, Saint Anthony of the Desert inspired him, mix these like ingredients, he made the highest compliment of the mind, minds are made to untangle God's will, thank you, for showing-us-a-bit-of forgiven community. Saint Augustine pray for us.

@@BiblicalBookworm Meaning he was right about the seven books and St. Jerome as smart and smug as he was, he was wrong and didn’t know everything about the Bible. Not only that but the pope and other church father’s knew better not go by the Rabbinic Hebrew translations because that was canonized almost 200 years after the gospel went out via the Greek / Hebrew. The Jews didn’t even know what books of the Old Testament were inspired or better put didn’t agree on which books were and were not. Saint Ambrose.

What a great video Elizabeth! Very interesting and intellectual. I am grateful that you put a lot of effort and time into helping me grasp this masterpiece by a great Saint. What stood out for me was Saint Augustine’s comment about one Bible passage can have different true meanings as long as The interpretation doesn’t contradict the Bible! Wow! I think there’s a lot of contradictions going on for awhile now in the Church that stems to the problems effecting the current crisis in the Church! I also wish my only temptation was to shake a pear tree. I hope you don’t mind me asking. How is it that you don’t know much about beauty? And that you don’t look too much into beauty? I think a good priest wrote a book about the importance of beauty. I am going to have to try to remember so I can recommend it. However I think you know a lot about beauty.😊🧁

For me beauty often feels like a waste of time. When I read a book I never care about how well written it is but only about the information it contains.
