The BNSF hi-rail truck from this previous video: • Burlington Northern Sl... , gets on Main 1 at the railroad crossing in Batavia, Iowa on April 19, 2017. After it gets on the track, it heads eastward in reverse.

Amtrak doesn’t need those trucks because they don’t own the rail. Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, and other big freight companies own the rail.

@@cameron-w mostly correct...... except the NorthEast Corridor. Scamtrak does own their own tracks from DC to Boston. and there... they own many of these & similar trucks.

This is called a boom truck, it does the heavy lifting and hauling of steel rail, ties, ect, they can also be equipped with a magnet to pick up tie plates, They also can have a hydraulic tool circuit on a hose reel for drills and saws and impact guns, They may also carry grease vats for loading the auto greasers on curves. Haul water tanks for fire suppression , carry large compressors for blowing snow out of switches. When the crew can get track time its hard and heavy work, 24-7 all year all weather.

on this day, there is a piece of rail in the rack on top. its a fairly safe bet they are about to remove a defective or broken section of rail.

All of the work is performed from the rear of the truck, hence why they back to a jobsite.
