Augustus Review - with Tom and Melody Vasel

While this definitely has a bingo mechanic, there is a lot of strategy that this review undersells. I have had this game for a month and would suggest that I can dominate anyone who sees this as "just bingo." With 4 or more players, there are all kinds of things going on. If you want to be mindless, you can be, but if you're looking for some decent strategy, you can find it. It's tough when you review dozens of games to really appreciate the subtleties of each one. First of all, there are card combinations that will either get you the bonus tiles or that will make completing other objectives easier. It is the decisions of which cards to pursue while keeping your eyes on your opponents strategies that can make for some tense moments. If someone is picking easy to complete objectives, they may trigger the end of the game far sooner than you want the end to come. It's no heavyweight euro, no arguing that, but to say it's just bingo is missing a lot of its fun

I love this game, play it frequently with my wife and my 5 year old. My wife's favourite game is Lords of Waterdeep, and this is right up there. Also good that it plays in about 20 minutes - perfect pre-bedtime game

Would you mind elaborating on that a bit? At glance, it really does look like a simple Bingo game--the only reason I watched the whole video was because of the Spiel des Jahres mention. :)

Is this the same game as Rise of Augustus? I don't see any reimplements on BGG and it's the same designer.

I've never liked Bingo, but this looks appealing to me. Don't know why, but reminds the Race for the Galaxy, as it also has a feel of racing to complete 10 cards to shut down other players. There is a lot of randomness because all tokens goes back to a bag every round, but you can control it with special tiles, so. It's an ok game.

You forget the best part of the game. When you complete a card you don't say, "I finished a card." You scream "AVE CAESER!" It sounds like it's silly but it's soooo much fun to yell.

Easy games get boring way way too boring. At least Ticket to Ride has some redeeming value in the fact that it doesn't remind me of going to Bingo night.

I played this game twice and it was horrible in my opinion, it‘s just bingo. I was surprised that it was nominated for Spiel des Jahres at all but that you think it‘s the best of the nominees when Hanabi was nominated as well is beyond me. No offense, everybody is entitled to their own opinion of course.

I hope Hanabi wins. Augustus is such a boring game. It's a little less boring than bingo, but just a little.
