Aurelia Dobre is amazing! The only Romanian gymnast that compared to her artistry in the 1990s and the recent years is CATALINA PONOR (Alexandra Marinescu was also lovely). It is hard to believe that Simona Amanar and Gina Gogean come from the same gymnastics program. They were technically efficient but lacked the elegance and artistry of Dobre, Silivas and Szabo.

Wow; her aggression on this apparatus is a joy to behold; no hesitations, or tenacious movements. She makes it look like a main road, instead of a 4 inch wide beam. She was the surprise World Champion in 1987, but well deserved; her artistry and grace and virtuosity is beautiful.Her Russian lever(where she puts her legs between her arms from the splits handstand) is breathtaking.

Aurelia was the unexpected star of 1987 worlds. Two months later she would have an injury to her knee that required at least two surgeries. I don’t think that Shushunova would have been able to defeat a healthy Aurelia Dobre. I love her beam exercise from 1989 worlds. Her beam work didn’t appear to be impacted by her injury and balance beam is second nature to her.
