What what? 4K? What a great excuse to rewatch a brilliant fan film! I remember back in the day, waiting for the next instalment on the website - back when it was split into parts. Such a great concept for a Trek show, and fascinating characters, and all long before official Trek gave us shows that weren't about Starfleet's finest!

Better than anything Star Trek has put out in the last 15 years, I loved it the first time and I still love it today in 4k. The CGI work is amazing, the writing is brilliant, the characters have a great amount of depth and the moral of hardship builds character and treasure your family while you can. It really will draw laughter and tears from anyone with a functioning heart. Best part the main character is not a member of Starfleet just a merchanteer with an old ship trying to make a living. Kara Carpenter is no Mary Sue. Seeing Alt-Universe Kara leave Starfleet and go back to her family in the end is so touching, and seeing the friendship grow between LoneStar and Aurora with no dialogue, just score is in itself masterful work.
@Auroratrek3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad the technology caught up with me to allow for a better-resolution version of this show. Kara is one of my favorite characters, and I think the most interesting characters are flawed, like all of us, and that a real hero isn't somebody who always wins, but the person who picks themself up off the floor time after time. And, yes, I'm a big believer in conscious gratitude for even the small things that make me happy, and that we'd all be a little better off if we think more about the things we have, and not about the things we don't. Envy is considered one of the deadly sins, but it hurts the "sinner" more than anyone else.

I am a fan of old and new Trek for various reasons after I made my peace with reboot TOS from 2009. As an LGBTQIA+ person me stumbling about the Mudd episode first was a bit unfortunate, because I went in with a pre opposed attitude, however I watched the episode and I really liked it. It isn't the outmost beauty but the lovely a bit rough around the edges look, the adorable voice acting and the surprisingly complex stories of both episodes. I even liked it so much that I made a character build on Star Trek online as another universe variant. For me this two episodes play very well in the same league as my favorite "Original Trek" episodes. Thank you for reworking them and by doing so give me another reason to watch them again. My best wishes for you and your loved ones. Thank you for creating this little gems. Yours sincerely a Germany based Star Trek fan.🖖🏽💜

Thank you! I appreciate you giving these episodes a chance. Star Trek at its best reminds us of our shared humanity (even among aliens!), so, while I didn't approach these episodes with any agenda other than to tell a good story with these characters, setting them in the Star Trek universe just naturally points the story towards inclusivity. That you compare these episodes favorably to TOS is about as high a compliment as I could ask for, so thank you for saying so! And I hope things go well for your variant! 😉

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it--I'm really pleased myself to have been able to improve its look. I used AVCLabs Video Enhancer on "Ultra", which did a pretty good job (for $39 for a month--I'll probably keep it for just a month). They have a Demo version if you want to play with it. I think going from 640x360 to 4K was pushing the software a bit, tho, since there were areas that got smoothed out and lost texture, so I ended up bringing the upscaled version into After Effects, and the original version just transformed bigger by 600%, and overlayed the AVC upscaled version over the blown up version at 50% opacity, and that allowed some of the original texture to fill back in, while adding a bit of smoothness and tightness to the overall look. It's not perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better! VHS might come with its own challenges, so playing with the Demo might be a good idea. There is a more expensive product called Topaz that might do better out of the box, but hard to say--I did play with their Demo version and I didn't think it was that much better for the price. Good luck!

Technically I've already exceeded my allotment with these characters at two Aurora episodes, buuuuut...I have noticed that other long-running productions (like Starship Farragut, for instance) have continued to produce videos longer than 30 minutes, and with continuing characters, and Paramount hasn't swooped in (maybe because they aren't making money and paying actors), so...

@@Auroratrek I think that's the key, right there. (NO PROFIT) As long as you don't profit from it, they'll leave you alone. And I like the idea of you doing new characters! Maybe Jacob could be a focus?... He feels like such a cowboy type! lol Be fun to see his day to day.

To me as well: I had been lamenting for some time that the resolution of the original upload didn't look that great on newer screens, but I discovered new methods for upscaling lower-resolution video and gave it a try, and I think it worked reasonably well. I hope you enjoy a fresh look at this episode!

I love this story. Was it not possible to re-render the material at a higher resolution, or would that incur too great an expense?
@Auroratrek3 ай бұрын
Thanks! It wasn't an expense issue so much as the fact that the software I used had changed so much since it was published that I couldn't open my old animation files to re-render them. Upscaling it certainly isn't as good as creating it in 4K, but I think it still looks pretty good considering!

The music was done by John Catney, who kindly volunteered to work on the music for Aurora, and did a really great job. You can get the music from his site at SoundClick: www.soundclick.com/johncatney/?content=songs

Hi! How cool is Aurora in 4k. But is it AI upscaling? ...ah... yes, OK. I am reading it now! Sorry for the stupid question.
@Auroratrek3 ай бұрын
No problem! I used a combination of AVCLabs Video Enhancer and After Effects. I think I pushed it a lot farther than the software was comfortable with--it was only 640x360!--so to get it up to 4K was quite a feat. It's not perfect, but I think it looks remarkably good, considering. Hope you enjoy it!

And so the video returned to us as was foretold in the ancient prophecies... A great delight to see this back as i loved it back in the day and it was a terrible thing when you had to take it down. May i ask, how have you been able to reupload because i seem to recall you took it down partly after the trek fan film debarcle over Axanar
@Auroratrek3 ай бұрын
LOL--an upload of Biblical proportions! ;-) As it turned out, I didn't have to take it down, just not make any more episodes. Since this is the same video, just higher-resolution, I believe it still follows the rules set out by Paramount/CBS about not creating new episodes. I hope you enjoy this refreshed version!

@@Auroratrek Apologies. I thought the name tag indicated the name of the person in the suit, not the name of the ship. Why does the suit have the name tag showing the ship on her breast?
@Auroratrek3 ай бұрын
@@Stalazon No problem! It's a bit confusing, even within the original Star Trek, where they kind of went back and forth whether all of Star Fleet used the "Flying A" insignia, or if each ship had its own insignia. I went with the latter, as noted in my Yorktown's "Tricorn" insignia. But in any case, the ship's insignia was always on the left breast, where Kara's "Aurora" badge is. Also, in current U.S. military fatigues, the branch of the military (i.e. "U.S. Navy") is on the left pocket/breast, and the person's name is on the right. With a crew of two, Aurora dispenses with name tags--LOL
