I didn’t expect to cry towards the end….but then Nathan is just captivating as always. Truly a fantastic actor!

Much well-deserved praise here for the incomparable Nathan Lane, but I'd also like to appreciate John Glover. An immense talent, brilliant comic timing, and that wonderful undercurrent of mischief. Plus his versatility--you may not be able to tell from these clips, but here Glover is playing twins with very different personalities.

I'll never forget Lane's truly spectacular performance in this role written especially for him. And I'll never forgive him for the now infamous act of betrayal that saw him reneging on his promise to Macnally to do the film version. The absence of anyone else suitable for this difficult part consigned this outstanding play to on-screen failure.

10:30 perfection as the humour of his rant disappears, replaced by genuine anger.

This is amazing! I remember watching the movie version of this in theaters with my crush when I was 16 years old. I’d love to see the full recording of this!

All I can think about is he and the late great Gregory Hines on the Tony’s that year “if I did a summer salt right now the ratings would go through the roof!” Thank you so much for posting this!!!

That was the first Tonys broadcast I ever watched, and they're still my favorite hosts. I taped and rewatched that show so many times I could do their bits from memory for years afterward.

Two thoughts. 1. It's fascinating how the same director and writer can produce two wildly different versions of the same material for different mediums. Lane is permitted to go for very broad comedy which sells well with a theater audience, while Alexander is far more understated and real in the film. 2. Whoever shot this must have been hired by Lane for his reel. Even when other characters have lines, the camera never leaves Lane.

@Chambers.Channel 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah probably so, but ALSO Buzz is simply a force of nature that sows great doubt within the videographer who wasn’t 100% off book before filming. And honestly, as long as the lines remain basically unchanged for the feature version of this show,then Jason Alexander cannot use ‘film’ as his crutch to disappointed audience members. Bc if you’ve ever either lived with or constantly convened with queenier behaving gay men, then you’d KNOW the drama ISN’T injected by Lane’s tendencies this time. Buzz is JUST a dramatic mess whirling into and around everything in that show. Add cameras and remove the live audience aspect and ANY emotionally honest attempt at the’ musicals all dying’ section REQUIRES queen power!
@chocolatesouljah
@chocolatesouljah 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chambers.Channel I agree. And let's hear it for queen power! To add to that, I saw a local production in Berkeley California's venerable Berkeley Rep and Patrick Kerr also lacked queen power as Buzz. Seeing Nathan Lane here is like a breath of fresh air.

Thank you for this! Just saw the movie again after a long time and agree about how much better the film would be with him! A good movie in parts, but something wrong with Jason Alexander trying to be gay. I also miss the breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience.

Do you happen to have more clips? I was not fortunate (old) enough to see this play when it came out... I was not born yet haha. If you have access to more of this brilliant play or even the whole thing please post it! He is so brilliant and moves you so profoundly it's hard to compare him with anybody else.

Why didn't you cover Nathan Lane in the film? A mess. Fantastic actor, he's so awesome in every genre he plays (A Funny Thing In Happened and the way to the Forum, The Birdcage, Mouse Hunt, The Iceman Cometh, The Nance, The Good Wife, Angels In Ameria or Penny Dreadful City Of Angels). Is so Underrated in Hollywood (movie or tv show), shame Hollywood, shame !

I would like to see Nathan Lane in Digimon as Gomamon. His broad sense of humour makes him the perfect choice to play Gomamon.

That's very random to say! I was just looking at Digimon Clips today. Hopefully videos like these will give me reasons not to lose faith during times like these, especially the clip at the beginning starting from 0:13.

@@TheJFish94 Splendid. If Nathan Lane appeared in Digimon as Gomamon, Ernie Sabella would've played Tentomon.

Was "Tommy Tune and Elaine Stritch" in the original play? I've only seen the movie (watching it again right now, in fact), and it was Robert Goulet and Cher. Both make me shudder, of course.

What a difference a virus makes! Now we have people dying alone, while their dearest, most loyal and beloved are standing in another room 'skyping' those last moments . Its not shame, bigotry and loneliness that isolates us when we most need to be touched, loved and kissed. Its institutionalized fear, Hospital protocol and CDC best practices recommendations.
