I have been on a producer’s kick recently. I would sell a kidney if I got the chance to see this when it was live. But I was not born.

What an event this show was, and at a time when we desperately needed to laugh! I don’t know that I can remember a show in recent memory where each part was so expertly tailored to its stars. The best lines and bits from the movie were there - and it was musical nirvana that creative team coming together when they did. What a treat this was - thank you as always for everything you do Spiderwoman!!!

I saw the original pre-Broadway Chicago tryout, absolutely magnificent seeing them already having it in hand and hysterical.

This opened about a month after my husband and I moved to New York. Money was tight and even though there were still seats available for performances a few months out a couple of weeks before it opened, we were hesitant to splurge on a full price ticket. We thought, let’s wait until it becomes available on TDF. Talk about learning the hard way. We never did see it! Consequently, I’m really happy for these videos!

This brings back so many memories of when I had the opportunity of a lifetime to be in a local production of this in 2008. I had the privilege of being the stage left tank.

Nathan Lane is so underrated in Hollywood (for too many years), shame. I love him. Brillant actors : The Lion King, Birdcage, Mousehunt, The Front Page, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Iceman Cometh, The Nance, The Producers, Angels In America, Penny Dreadful City Of Angels, The Good Wife, Modern Family.

I don’t think Lane is underrated at all, except by a few members of the general public. 3 Tony Awards (6 nominations), 2 Daytime Emmys (3 nominations), 6 Primetime Emmy nominations, 2 Golden Globe nominations and 6 Drama Desk Awards (11 nominations) tell a different story.

@@seamus1956 When I say he's underestimated. I speak of course at the level of proposals that he does not receive in Hollywood. His film career did not explode. Fortunately he had the theater (he himself said it). But if not, real fans know how talented he is, capable of playing anything ^^.

Does it seem as though Nathan Lane is staying off pitch, straining vocally, and struggling to get back on beat around 2:40? I believe this performance would have occurred after his bout with vocal nodules (which he developed because of this part). I’m not criticizing this legend at all; I just think it’s fascinating to see such a gifted professional show some imperfections like that. I love to follow singers’ vocal trajectories throughout their careers because I love to see the humanness behind the legendary facade.

Indeed it was after the troubles you mentioned. Consider this footage comes from Nathan and Matthew's return to the show in 2004, and those problems he developed in 2001 when he was still doing the first run of the show. He actually, I've read somewhere, had to stop doing the role for a while during said first run because of his vocal problems. I'm actually impressed that he went through the strain of doing this show every night after that, then return to it three years later and then cover Dreyfuss in London in such a short notice. He truly is a professional of his craft.
