It would take a lot of projects like this to justify the cost. But it would make it easy to copy most of the exterior dimensions of the one in Bovington since it is the reference for the Tamiya 222.

How good is Alan at stick welding, so lucky to have his experience in all aspects of the job , how lucky are you to have people like Dmitry help with parts etc, thanks for another great update
@silentotto5099
@silentotto5099 Жыл бұрын
As your comment suggests you might know a bit about stick welding... In a couple of shots, after a weld was completed Al took a hammer and knocked off a ridge of built up material, revealing the weld underneath. Could I impose on you to provide a quick explanation of what was happening exactly? (example at 14:25 ) What is the built up material he was knocking off? Surely it wasn't part of the metal weld. I've seen plenty of video of people welding before, but I don't recall ever seeing anyone knock off a ridge of material like that. Usually they have to take a grinder to get the weld flat. Thanks.

That's the slag layer formed by the flux in the rod. Normal process in stick welding
@stephencox4224
@stephencox4224 Жыл бұрын
@@silentotto5099 What Al was removing was known as Slag Stick welding rods are not used with gas but have a covering of flux material to prevent oxygen contaminating the weld leading to porosity and weak welds and what ou see was how the flux coating protects the weld keeping it's integrity. Back say 40 years ago welding equipment was AC alternating current to stick weld and it was not an easy task welding rods would often stick when trying to start an Arc and it was a special skillset to get it right, Nowadays with Inverter technology we more often use DC Direct current and it is much more controlable and easier to weld much easier to strike the arc which is when you bring the stick welding rod close enough for an arc to start the welding process but not too close the rod welds itself to the base metal you are welding. Still a vital process as for instance Piprlines such as water , Gas or Fuel are still Stick or as it is known MMA or Manual Metal Arc welded and Pipeline welders are certified and obviously the weld must be perfect as say for instance it may be the cooling pipes for an Atomic Reactor, Failure is not an option so such certified Pipeline Welders earn big money. For instance welders that weld the Hulls of Hyundai ships actually get paid about one third of what the CEO of Hyundai Shipbuilding Corporation gets paid it is a vital and specialised field and the modern world could not exist without these people and their skillsets

I concur. For cast parts and general layout it would be a game changer. You don't even need hand measurement at all in this case as it would be leagues ahead of using a tape/square. In their video of the Polish guys restoring a Tiger, they were using 3D scans which they then edited to reproduce clean CAD.

This channel is one of my favorites. I am not an armor or artillery expert. But I find the restoration process fascinating and entertaining and educational. Have you guys thought about investing in one of those handheld 3D scanners and use that for measuring some of the pieces like that turret? It would eliminate missing some key measurements and can be imported into CAD to get more precise angles, etc.
