How to Start a Black Templars Army in Warhammer 40K

I've bought two boxes of Sword Brethren just because of how versatile the kit is. With the two boxes I've bought I've built 2 Castellans, a Marshall, and a squad of 7 Sword Brothers. And the upgrade sprue is amazing for kitbashing and lets you make some really unique looking models, I highly recommend it.

You can also use the loadouts to build non-Primaris lieutenants. A Firstborn lieutenant can take two lightning claws, for example, and if you scrounge up a spare jump pack you can put that on him too. And if you get some spare terminator stormshields you can make them into counts-as Bladeguard, too.

Ligniting claws and Flamers on Primars models, actual Primaris Neophyte models, Meltas on Impulsors and LR, and an actual 5+ on a LR... BT are perhaps the strongest contenders to take the cake, as the real poster boys in 9th.

@@magearamil8626 I myself am a massive fan of more "exotic" chapters, such as Black Dragons and Carcharodons, even if putting any of them together into a list that could rival Smurfs or the sons of Sigismund is very unlikely. I'm merely point at the fact that from a marketing perspective, BTs are looking really hot right now.

White scars are highly underrated...No one talks about them despite them being one of the strongest chapters right now...At least they are for me. Fast moving, hard hitting, advance and charge, fall-back and charge, advance and fire assault weapons with no penalty, and +1 damage in cc when the assault doctrine is active (the single best super doctrine in the book imo). What's not to love??

@@intense_pickle I'll tell you what, and the reason applies to all chapters, except UM, BA, SW, DA and up until very recently also BT: short bench of characters with good datasheets and unique options. WS are boss and I absolutely love'em (I have about 300 pts worth of Destroyers painted, but they are nowhere near as strong as WS, due to being successors). It's really the marketing, that incentivizes the balance update and interest from not only player's side, but also from writers, expanding on the existing lore etc.

Black templars are my army of the year project and I played my first game with them, it was 500pts and I ran a smash captain, emperors champion, 5 man assault intercessor squad and a squad of outriders, I was fighting necrons I lost but it was so much fun and seeing my emperors champion reck face made me really inspired to build the army further, I'm using the imperium magazine to get more units for it

I play an all Firstborn army, and was building them for the old "Knights of Sigismund rule". So I have a squad of Vanguard vets with Chainswords and a relic blade and Storm shields. Funnily enough, they still wreck face because I find people underestimate them. Especially when I've stacked fires of devotion and Exhortation of rage.

Love seeing my crusadey boys getting some limelight. The supplement changed this army from fast melee to very durable melee. Park some crusaders and bladeguard on central objectives with the 5+ FNP litany and dare your opponent to wade through a sea of chainsword attacks. It's pretty fun and the new models are absolutely gorgeous.

I have to say I've gotten into several communities on KZbin: music, guitar(specifically), cooking, electronics, art, and now warhammer among several others. This is the first community that isn't eager to answer any questions. I have maybe 8 or 10 of them floating around, not only videos here on KZbin but on Facebook and reddit aswell. None of them have a single answer, opinion, or even a like for that matter. Are yall just not ok with people joining the hobby? No fucks to give about people joining the gaming table with you? One of the biggest parts of maintaining a hobby you've started is how easily you can integrate into the community. I've contacted the game stored about the players and if they even carry the products and most don't anymore. Especially if you have a warhammer or games workshop store in your area. Please warn me now if this is a toxic community because it looks fun, but I'm not about to drop a couple of grand and years worth of time to never want to deal with the players.

Yep, this but Bladeguard. A couple of shields and the Axe/Sword for weapons and you can get all 4 of them turned into Bladeguard. A bit of bolstering with bits to make them more blinged and it works nice (I also really like the shield Aquilla, really emphasizes the point). Shame right handed power weapons are so uncommon though.

Dont forget the Impulsor can be made into a solid weapons platform with 5++. For 130 points you can get a multimelta impulsor with 2 storm bolters, or even add a belicatus missle array for 150 or a heavy stubber for 135. Is it super competitive? No. But it can pack a punch for a transport unit with an invul and its a good delivery mechanism for sword brethren or even some hellblasters

I’ve got an impulsor with storm bolsters, missile array, and stubber because pre-upgrade sprue. Would definitely build it with the melta if I did it again. Great little delivery service for those sword boys.

Sleep on sword brethren at your own risk, a 10-man squad is tough to move from the table when you have multiple other threats distracting you. They are a good unit to stack buffs onto, and once they reach their target, they fuck.

Personally taking two squads of 5 bladeguard in impulsors, one led by helbrecht other by the emperors champion, converting the bladeguard from sword bretheren, the idea of a bunch of heavily armoured, robed sword and shield warriors leading the charge appeals to me greatly. And my one last slot went to a bike chaplain built into a massive smash captain, works out to a pretty absurd amount of damage. Practical? probably not, fun? hell yes

Consider Vanguard Vets with Jumpacks and TH/SS combo as a way to deal with heavily armoured things like GK baby walkers. TH/LC is great for taking out infantry though, so it depends what you're facing. I'm magnetising the weapons on mine (converting from Sword brethren) so I can switch them out depending on what I need most. I was wanting to add some Assault Terminators as well, but the way the points went there isn't any room for them currently. I would like to convert some Primaris sized terminators when I'm done with my core list though, and at least 3 x Multimelta bikes as well.

And I like the crusaders you get with that box over assault intercessors as well. And you can't argue with the Emperor's Champion if you're building a BT army! The codex and stratagem card deck are nice additions as well

I bought 3 boxes of Crusaders that I am running with basic CC load out (no fists) Grimaldus, Helbrecht, Chaplain on Bike and 3 Redemptor Dreads to get started. I'm getting some Sword Brethren that I'm converting into TH/SS Van Vets, and some Eradicators this month. Then I just need my 4 Servitors, and choice of either Judiciar or Company Champ (that I'm probably just using the Emps champ model on a smaller base as my company champ, then I just need to give him a shield, but have been thinking about getting a second box of Sword Brethren and converting one of them into my Company Champ.) to round out my 2k points. I was just going to run a Judiciar, but after the changes I have to choose between Servitors and the Judiciar. The Servitors are very important in competitive games to hold objectives, so in these games I would change out the Judiciar for the Company Champ (as an even cheaper way of running Aurellian Shroud, then I'd just use him to pop over watch and stuff) It's a shame the points changes happened, as the list was perfect before. It's identical to the one Kevin Roach was running before CA (he's now playing Grey Knights instead) I have been talking to him recently to get some help, and he reckons that running a Company champ instead of Judiciar is the way to go, as the Servitors are too important to give up. We do also have to drop some rocket pods off the dreads as well though. This is why he's started playing Grey Knights competitively now instead though. The 40 points extra (well 39 as the list had one point spare) actually really hurts us competitively. Lucky foe me though I'm not a high end tournament player, so I don't really care. I am however always looking for advice and other ways to run the army. I have seen a good list that runs a bunch of multimelta bikes as well and an Apothecary, that looks decent. There's also the other Apothecary list that takes the Assault Terminators and the Sword Guard or whatever they're called and stuff, but that seems a lot more complicated to play, and as I'm just learning to play the game I don't want to over do it. The list that Kev won the GT with is more straight forward I think. Sit on objectives and weather fire. It's more about gaining more VP and basically just face tanking. He said that he barely had any minis left most games, but won because he had more VP's than his opponent, because they couldn't move him off the objectives.

The upgrade sprue is definitely a bit pricier than it should be but it's also incredibly fun. I have gotten more out of that kit than many full kits. The combination of extra heads, shoulders, a multi melta for vehicles and the incredible relics is great. The relics particularly are cool, adding items that offer real bonuses along with the cool aesthetic change has been very satisfying. Worth it for anyone considering spending the 35.... I will say that GW needs to give more shoulder pads in these upgrade kits, but that's the case for any upgrade sprue.

Howdy again! Templars aren't too terrible against Grey Knights, because they have relics, warlord traits, squad upgrades, and stratagems that make psychic powers either harder to cast or outright deny them. Templars also have a native rule that says they have a 5+++ from Mortal wounds specifically, which is a measure of protection from psychic powers. You can't lean on it though. That's why we have a vow that allows us to reroll ones to wound against psykers in melee, along with a small pre game move for our whole army if a single psyker is present in the enemy army. Can’t speak to the grey knight match up but I fared alright against a psyker heavy tyranid list and their smites. Our 5+ fnp to mortals is pretty good , plus a 1CP strat to roll a 4+ and auto deny a psychic power each turn is pretty good.

Templars have some good anti-psyker options. With a few relics and relic bearers, you can stack -3 to cast within 12 in, -4 to cast for a turn AND perils on any doubles, plus any failed casts within 18 in causes mortal wounds. There's a strat to deny on a 4+ and Grimaldus has a native deny built in. Plus the 5+ FNP against all mortals, there's a solid way to mitigate psyker damage. Just run some anti-tank in dreadnoughts and eradicators and you can do okay. Had a squad of 3 erads spike their damage and nuked a dreadknight off the board in one round of shooting.

On question I still coudln't find the answer to is the following: Ca you take a psyker inquisitor in your BT army to give them some spyker support or does that go against some of their rules? I couldn't find anything specifically forbidding them to field non BT psyker in their army.

If it's not written in the rules you should be able to. Lore wise the Templars might not like working for an Inquisitor but they don't have much of a choice due to the hierarchy so...

You can't take a Librarian model in a BT Detachment, but you can take Psykers in allied Detachments.

Yes - you can take a psyker using the Agent of the Imperium keyword rules. A psyker Inquisitor may accompany the Templars from a rules perspective, even if the lore would make them very upset indeed. I have actually done this before. Ironically, I chose psychic ritual as a secondary upon seeing board layout and how it was going to be an easy max out on a secondary. How’s that for violating the fluff but still playing rules as written? (I sold it to myself by saying the Templars didn’t know the hidden agenda and burned her after the battle when they learned the truth)

To clarify - the literal rule says that Templars may not field librarian units. It just so happens all units in codex space marines that can manifest psychic powers are librarians. The various inquisitor characters lack that keyword, and thus may slot in using agent of the imperium.

10-man squad equipped with 2x TH/LC and the rest power-swords. March it straight up the middle of the board. If your opponent wants to focus it down, they'll have to ignore your other units. If they don't focus it down, the unit absolutely fucks.

@@KameSennin4209 they can be armed with both TH/LC? that's cool. They don't come with those bits though, you'd have to get them from other kits (there's only 1 x TH in the kit and it's 2-handed) There are some nice 3rd party BT TH's though. I'm getting some for my Vanguard Vet conversions.

It is kinda weird, but I assume what you have are Intercessors? If so, then yes, you can. Realistically you'd like to take Templar Crusaders, which a Primaris Marines that can smack people with pointy sticks. But hey, intercessors ain't terrible.

Yes. Black Templars may field (almost) any unit from Codex Space Marines as well as units from Codex supplement Black Templars. I said almost because there are rules stating Templars may not field librarian units. So use your basic marines as fire support for the scary sword boys to your hearts content

Most importantly i think you should include a apothecary+1 unit with champion of the feast and relic bearer you constantly revive. Assault centurions, blade guard, terminators or a big crusader squad maybe. Bring plenty of fire power. BT melee is more supplemental. Its not a pure melee chapter. You ll be very sad thinking that.
