FYI I have X2 RC boats, x4 RC cars, X3 drones.

Can you please explain why the need to have propellers that run inwards instead of both being clockwise? I’m working on a double prop boat myself, and I’m not sure why they do this set up.
@steveblackbird Жыл бұрын
Cancels out gyroscopic effect and enhances the rudder's effectiveness at speed. I would think...same on twin engine jets, better performance in turns.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
@@steveblackbird No. And jet engines are not counter rotating.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
You are kind of asking two things at the same time. What all twin prop boats have, are counter rotating props. These can be spun in and out. You run them counter clockwise to counter the prop torque which basically keeps the boat in a straight line. If both props were turning say clockwise, the boat would turn to the right when the rudder or drives are pointing straight. In fact, single props boat do this as well, but not as much. With surfacing props as you see here and which is what most fast rc boats run, you also get a paddle wheel effect. This is due to only half the prop being in the water. So while the prop obviously moves the boat forwards, the blades will act as a paddle wheel and try to move the boat sideways. In this situation, counter rotating props are crucial for stability and to avoid the stern from "crabbing". Now in or out. For moth mono hulls and cats, the most common is to spin the props out. Out means that the starboard prop turns clockwise, and the port turns counter-clockwise. This of course when viewed from the stern. The benefit from spinning the props out is that this creates the most stability. An added bonus is that the boat also comes easier on plane, and it leans nicely into the turns. This makes for a safe and easy handling boat. Now in on the other hand where the starboard prop spins counter-clockwise and the port prop spins clockwise, creates added lift, especially in the bow. So obviously the boat runs faster as it has less vetted surface. The problem is that now the boat has a greater tendency to run loose, and when you turn, the boat will not lean into the turn as much. The latter can be a big challenge for cats as they actually tend to lean out when the props are turning in. This makes the boat MUCH more prone to rolling if turned too hard at too high speed. Now in a monohull, this is not as much of an issue as monohulls naturally tend to lean into turns, but spinning in still greatly enhances the chance of a spinout or a rollover. As we say in real world powerboat racing, "Spin them in to win". However, that said unless you are going for that last little percentage and know what you're doing, spin them out. You can gain a few mph, but only if you are spot on with your setup. You will get a much better and probably equally fast boat if you spin them out. So that's about it.

@@AB-80X As an Aircraft Engineer of 30+ years I know that well. There were tests if I remember correctly by Pratt and Whitney. Proved the theory behind having each engine rotate in different directions.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
@@steveblackbird Yes there has been tests, and at least one plane back in the day that featured a set of jet engines that were designed to be counter-rotating. There was the Corvair YB-60 which was basically the Corvair B-36 retrofitted with jets. In modern commercial aviation and in other forms of transport aviation, there are no counter-rotating setups. As an aircraft engineer you know why this is - cost. The gases and air coming out of a turbofan, or turbojet back in the day, changes direction due to the stators, this both counteracts the gyroscopic effect but also the torque steer that might be present due to rotation of the thrust cone. So as you know, it will not make any sense for an airline, engine manufacture, parts supplier, aircraft manufacture or technician to have to deal with the expense and time consumption associated with having mirrored parts for their turbofan engines. That said, there are a few twin and triple spool engines that are in themselves counter-rotating. However, this only pertains to some fighter jets that rely on this setup for additional agility. The F-35 and F-22 uses such engines, and so does the Pegasus engine found in the Harrier. But as for modern commercial, cargo, and military aircraft outside of fighters? No. From a practical and financial standpoint it would not make sense as the benefit from a performance standpoint is slim to none.

For the cables.... have you thought about using water for lube? Pressurized water is side fed into stuffing tube and rotation of cable pumps the water to rear towards the strut. Saw it years ago put into use by a gentleman from Japan in the U.S. gas nats in 2007. We had a really hard time prounouncing his name ... we called him “H”. His rigger was a a monster on the course. He did lube with grease after runs as well.

Not sure if you read the title of the video or took the time to look at the thumbnail, but nowhere in this video does it say the boat reached 100mph. It's also not a pond, it's a lake, and it is big enough to reach top speed, it's just the conditions weren't right and the driver was not willing to push it harder and risk wrecking the boat.
