I feel like Tom is always very smart in these. Everyone else tries to go for something really unique and different but they can be polarizing, whereas classic and basic is at least familiar and safe so they always get the highest votes.

I think in the end though, having those more unique orders are the better option. You might not win the actual competition, but there's nothing that rewarding about hearing that people like the most basic dish possible. Its like ordering macaroni and cheese with a side of chicken strips- nobody is going to hate it, but it won't wow anybody, or sway them away from their potential order, which seems to be the actual point. I think watching people discover new things, such as really liking curry sauce with their order, is much more interesting and rewarding to watch. If there was an actual prize for the winner I would agree, but in this case I think it would be a super boring video if everyone just ordered the most basic thing possible and we established that people will never hate something that could be on the kids meal 😂

In the UK chippy takeaways will do salt & vinegar, curry sauce, gravy and/or mushy peas. With tomato sauce being the most popular as well (imo) and in a fish&chip restaurant table service, you'd find lemon and tartare as options too. Often with bread and butter to make a chippy sandwich. Carbs on carbs on even more carbs. Oh yeah and the chippies need to be way fatter than those, you won't regret it!

Fish and chips have come a long way from when I was a kid. Back then it was 20c for a minimum order of chips (more chips than what you get today). Potato cakes were also 20c. And when you'd get your order, it was wrapped in white butchers paper, so you'd tear a hole in one end of the wrapped meal so as to maintain the heat while accessing the chips or whatever. And you had a limited range of choices, eg: chips, fried fish (flake), dim sims (steamed/fried), Chiko roll, fried scallops or hamburger. And the only sauce was the bottle of soy on the counter for you to add. And there was always a jar of pickled onions. Some of those orders you can now get at the pub or RSL.

Curry sauce with fish and chips is a very british thing although I've never ordered it with curry sauce ever or ever tasted it. For me i order fish and chips with either mushy peas or gravy depending on my mood and always tartare sauce as a condiment and of course salt and vinegar on the chips.

Fish and chips are very subjective and depend on who you get from... first and foremost, the fish must be top quality and fresh, the batter should be crispy and not soggy and the chips freshly made not frozen. But, my order is pretty basic, Fish 'Snapper', serve of chips with chicken salt, a Chiko roll, a dim sim, and a pineapple fritter with pickled onions.
