I lived in Memphis for a year and then went back to Minneapolis for work. My friends were SHOCKED at how much my accent changed. I'm from the most southern tip of Indiana (5 minutes from Kentucky), so I had a little tiny drawl. I didn't notice how much Memphis had changed it until I heard myself on someone's voice mail.

Exactly this - I think I read/saw he did this voice for almost two years while rehearsing and filming. He even commented about it on a talk show saying people are talking about his voice. I don't think he's doing this intentional.

I notice he talked faster before. He seems to have slowed down and become more thoughtful as he's speaking as if he's thought more about the things he's being asked and choosing his words more carefully. He's easier to listen to now. Actually has a really pleasant speaking voice that sounds more mature in tone and expression.

Agree I mean people need to leave him alone like I dont even think he sounds like Elvis anymore this just sounds like his voice as it is but people forget hes grown and matures he has come into his own and his manhood which is why he comes across very self confident and very self assured there is no nervous energy about him and maybe people are not used to seeing that in todays movie stars but I think this is just the way he talks

He was younger and excited in the older interviews. He has the same tone. It’s just the power and pace he has learned to control. Most people try to change these aspects of their voices when they are speaking to a wide audience. If you deepen your pitch and slow your pace, people are more engaged. It works well if you’re in sales too ☺️

He was also younger and voices change with age, however, the "Elvis" tonality is definitely there, and since it took two years of his life, I am sure it'll be a part of him for a while, if not forever. I watched an early screening of the movie last night, and he embodied Elvis, from his voice, to his mannerisms... everything. He was AMAZING, I would be shocked if he doesn't win an Oscar for this performance - and this is coming from a LONG TIME Elvis obsessed fan.

I’m a vocalist for a living and can attest to the fact that the way to keep a consistent vocal range is to also speak in that range, so if tenors want to build up their higher or belting range they should speak in a higher tone of voice. I’m sure the years of vocal training for this role because of the covid delay has just made him more comfortable speaking in this range, and also he’s probably been coached that it makes people take him more seriously as an actor. Before he was still trying to talk with the energy of a Disney teen heartthrob now he’s made this transition into movie star, we all wear different masks ESPECIALLY performers for a living

I think the problem is with my tongue cuz instead of firmly & strongly resting on roof which I guess is normal I don't, I don't use pressure etc. Maybe cuz of that my breathing has been bad cuz I'm not at all using stomach diaphragm or whatever(shallow breathing/higher voice/not pronouncing things right/quiet). If this doesn't sound crazy etc and you have an idea that can help or tell me what the problem is like a vocal disorder, I'd be imensely grateful. As people have mentioned, one of things Austin obviously did was to consciously lower his voice for the part. Elvis's speaking voice was baritone, Austin's more tenor. Over two years it's quite possible that his vocal cords were altered by constant use of his lower range and that he has, in fact, changed his voice permanently. That's not to say he couldn't adopt a higher tone for another part if he needed to, but it may be more comfortable for him to speak this way now. In terms of accent, Austin does not naturally have Elvis's southern drawl, but he does now seem to enunciate a little more loosely - again, it's hard to kick a vocal habit you've cultivated for so long.

Like Charlie Hunnam who played on Son's of Anarchy for so long with an American accent, though he's from England lost his British accent. I saw him on an interview, where he said he had to get voice lessons and relearn his British accent to play in King Arthur. Or Heath Ledger becoming depressed and physically drained after playing the Joker. So many actors and actresses have been influenced by the characters they play with actual physical changes.

You can train your voice to change. My voice used to be very high and somewhat nasal and I deliberately brought it down a register because I also work as a phone psychic advisor (Martha Woodworth, Best Psychic For Me) and I wanted my voice to be more comforting and pleasant for my clients who were often going through difficult or stressful moments in their lives and needed a calm reassurance that things would be OK. It was actually a good thing for me, as well. Changing my voice brought me into a place of more steadiness and peace; I felt more balanced.

I understand this 💯 %. I was born and grew up in Venezuela. My mother language is Spanish but I do speak, write and hear a Swiss german dialect the whole day, for years. At work I do speak English, French, Italian, german (both dialects) and rarely Spanish. When I speak my mother language, people say I’ve got an special accent and think I’m Swiss who learned Spanish very well. Even with my family, they can’t recognized my Venezuelan accent any more.

Exactly, consider his age also, 2015 to 2022.. And the one from 2019, he might have already start working on the role... But also after more than 2 years working on such a strong character, all the study that went into it, it's absolutely natural to have something left inside you..maybe it will wash off with time, maybe not, maybe only when he gets another character...

Sounds like he is voice-acting. You can almost see how he is thinking about how he is saying everything, or really, how it will be perceived. Before, he would speak more freely, without the thought of how he sounded.

Anyone who’s ever travelled anywhere and spent some time around people with a different accent will tell you how easy it is to pick up that accent and forget your own. I’m from the French speaking side of Switzerland. I spent 2 weeks in southern France once for 2 weeks. When I got back home my friends asked me why I sounded like I was from Marseille! Took me a few days or weeks to speak « normally » again.

Seems to have grown through Elvis' life experience, and is more grounded because of it. This is called personal growth for those of you that are too afraid to leave your comfort zone. He is embracing the change he experienced and no comment from people who can't see it will ever change that.

Why is everyone so obsessed and freaking out about this? He did an AMAZING job BECAUSE of his method acting that he practiced for 2+ years working on this film. If anything he should be PRAISED for his abilities and talent and accurate portrayal of someone who was so out of this world. Most of these people talking about this topic and being critical of him have never truly accomplished anything in their life besides a few viral Tiktok or KZbin videos 😒.

Surely not everyone, only idiots. I admire his extraordinary acting method and the result was beyond perfect. The comments that irritate me are those who say that he's just faking, or that his speech has only changed due to aging from a 26 yo to a 30 yo. Damn anyone who speaks English as a first language must hear the difference in his accent. English is my second language and I hear it very well.

It's clear that he had vocal training before and during the movie to protect his voice. It's possible his voice sounds deeper to protect it during the press tour because he is constantly talking during interviews & it's easier on his vocal cords.

He had 4 or 5 voice trainers over a 1.5 year period. Playing Elvis would only work if he got his voice pattern an inflections down. Elvis had a unique voice. I'm a bass/baritone singer now but it wasn't always that way. After repeated use and training I was able to achieve my lower voice. I'm sure it was the same for him to. Tom Dutkiewicz

To me, these interviews show he matured..you can see he thinks about what he’ll say verses before Elvis where he just chattered away. To me, he grew up and it appears to be during the production of Elvis. He must have learned a lot about how Elvis maneuvered interviews and the the way he handled press. Elvis helped Mr. Butler in more ways than just awards. Elvis taught this man how to become a man and handle himself. Bravo to the change! Maturing is always a good thing
