Austin mini Steering wheel lowering bracket mod for under £10!

In this video I fit a steering wheel lowering bracket to my mini. The standard steering wheel position wasn't very comfortable as the wheel was too high and blocked out some of the gauges. This modification cost less than £10 and takes less than 10 minutes to fit. The driving position now is much more comfortable!

Those brackets make a massive difference, they provide a much more comfortable driving position 👍

I've had to do the opposite. My '88 had that same bracket installed when I bought the car last summer. Found the tilted wheel was preventing my leg from easily moving between the pedals (i'm 6'1" and long in the loins!). I'm liking the original position of the wheel much better, I guess this is why they are this way from the factory...to suit greater range of people sizes. Note there are some reports of the this lower cost bracket giving too much flex and even some breaking. There are higher quality types on the market, giving more adjustment and less/no flex.

Fortunately I'm only 5'6 so I don't have the leg issue lol and if having the wheel in the stock position works better for you then that's only going to be a good thing as being comfortable when driving is the safest way to drive This part was cheap (hence the title of the video) and there are more expensive ones that are heavy duty out there but I've never heard of the one I've used in this video flexing however I don't tend to drive my cars hard and the minis barely do 500 miles per year so I don't think this is something I should be worried about All the best, Sean

Hi man exited to see your videos I have a Thirty too so I was wondering if you could resolve my doubt that I have on some buttons on the inside that doesn’t work , mine have faded buttons so there is no decal or something that can give an idea of what it’s supposed to do.

Hi, from left to right on the panel the buttons as Brake fluid check, Heated rear screen, Hazard warning lights then Side/ Dip lights switch. Hope this helps

Hey Sean, great video - the first I've seen where the steering rack nuts are loosened, so good to know I need to do that. Regarding the shear bolt that comes out of the factory bracket - do you know what size I need to buy in advance? I don't want to remove it and then be stuck without the correct one and unable to move the car without it! Cheers

Cheers Nick, might be worth buying one in advance but if you can usually reuse them. If the bolt has been sheered you can usually cut a slot in it and use a flat head screwdriver to unwind the bolt. These steering wheels were unique to the mini thirty. They do pop up on ebay however the prices can vary and most are far too over priced in my opinion so your best bet would be to have a steering wheel re trimed. A Google search should throw up some companies that do it
