Hi, I really enjoying your videos, they're very educational. 👍 I've just recently bought a 2003 hatchback model (52 plate) mini and the boot light is on as if the door is open but when you look at the car, the passenger side of the boot looks fine and flush, as if it should be, but the drivers side has a gap and slightly proud when it's closed. Any ideas how to repair it? Thanks, Rory.

I think Alex Issigonis was in his late 50s/ early 60s when he designed the mini but in all seriousness I agree its not a great design, especially when the bolts seize up due to corrosion or the captive nuts on the back start spinning. When that happens, they are a nightmare to get to

With regards to doing the transmission fluid change on an auto, this is a job I haven't done however I've done a manual transmission oil change a couple of times on the R50's but didn't film it. I can only imagine the job would be simple enough but will be a tad more complex as there will be a filter to swap out

So Sorry that I'm "Late to the Party"... I just stumbled onto your channel. I Love what you're doing, in such limited space. I'm restoring a '72 Chevy Nova, and have to work outside. Right now, we have a foot of snow, and it's still snowing (I'm in Canada) I Love the job you did on the engine steady. It's the kind of stuff I'm doing, while the weather puts a stop to the bigger jobs. I just rebuilt my pedal assembly, and painted it. (Little bits and bobs that all need doing) I plan on watching your entire build, and look forward to seeing how it goes. 💪💪💪

Great video for a bit of a pig of a job. I changed both cables on my r52 convertible today. One tip I found elsewhere for releasing the cables out of the body near the lever. You used a thin screwdriver but the bracket over the 2 cable ends on my car had no gap to get a screwdriver down. However, I found another guide from an American forum and they recommended using a deep 11mm socket to release the clips. I tapped the socket over the end of the cable and then from underneath the car was able to pull the cable free. Was pretty straightforward and not too many swear words were uttered.

Oil should be BMW-LL 04 Longlife spec why you using GM OIL not mini/bmw or castrol shell etc to LL04 spec. Correct oil and filter is essential. Also note…use good fuel filter like Bosch or Mann and not those cheap inferior ones, they may cause major issues. Never use wrong oil and it’s 5w30 SPEC Bmw LL04 fully Synthetic.

For all r50 owners who cannot get the fitting/cable end out of the caliper... Heat, i tried drilling,pulling cutting hammering. Took a blowtorch and heated the outside for 10 seconds and the cable poped out with little force. The fitting is tight and the old gasket gets stuck, heat is the answer.

Hi, you only want enough gas to shield the weld, too much or too little gas will ruin the weld. Ideally you just want a gentle flow when you pull the trigger

Thank you for the excellent video. I’ll subscribe. Just one question please, do you think it would be possible to move the handbrake cables out of the way by just undoing the handbrake end? Our mini is a 2004, so knowing my luck I’ll have the same grief at the calliper end ! Be good to hear your thoughts please Best wishes Jase
@BMCWorkshop
@BMCWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi jase, you'll need to undo the bolt under the handbrake lever. The biggest problem with the R50 calipers is they are aluminium and the ferrals on the handbrake cables are steel and the 2 metals react with each other and they weld themselves together so if your doing this job take it easy and buy 2 new cables
@jasonyoutube2908
@jasonyoutube2908 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes I was just hoping I might be able to undo the handbrake cables at the front end, to be able to loosen them enough to remove the tank strap (ie to leave the calliper ends connected)? Sadly our tank strap has snapped today (driver side, but by the rear bolt has rusted through) guess that means I shouldn’t try to drive it ?
@BMCWorkshop
@BMCWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't drive it if the strap is rusted out. Top tip, check out the prices from BMW Mini for a new strap. I got one from there much cheaper than the ebay crap and it was a genuine part. I've done a video on that too

Good video, I’ve just done this job with exactly the same bearing kits replacement kits. I also noticed that the spacer is slightly less than half the depth of the original spacer. I also used the original spacers, there’s nothing to wear on them after all. I very accurately measured the width of the original bearings when placed together against the same for the new bearings placed together and they are exactly the same. So using the old spacer shouldn’t cause an issue.
