Love your guys' reactions as always, been waiting for this one! Couple of important things to mention for context: 1. All the Star Wars references are because this released alongside The Phantom Menace, the first Star Wars movie in nearly 20 years! And Austin Powers 2 eventually knocked Episode 1 off number 1 at the box office! 2. Vanessa being written out is a reference many don't get - it's to the fact every James Bond movie has a different female character every time, with no explanation as to what happened to the last one. Austin Powers 3 won't even bother with the explanation!
@TheClassicWorld Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's painfully clear that most of this is literally a mockery of James Bond, but it's done in a very sweet, harmless way -- and actually makes this great in its own right. It's a bit like how Scary Movie is literally better than Scream (though Scream 1-3 are okay and pretty funny social commentary in their own right, though I personally don't highly rate them and think it's a bit too post-modernist nonsense. It's the same reason why Elm Street are actually bad horror movies: they tried to make a strong female hero, and it just became a slasher with zero tension/fear in terms of the victims and the killer/Freddy, so their 'fight scenes' are just cringey. Thankfully, I actually think New Nightmare is good, though also meta. Elm Street 1 and 3 are also good. The rest are bad, I think, though it at least has some story and symbolism. By Scream 4, though, it just became silly. Kinda interested to see what they do with Scream 6 given that it's now meta-meta-meta in the real world...

2 recommendations for you: My Girl (1991) - terrific Motown soundtrack and Macauley Culkin's best role. Funny, sad, everything. Amazing movie. You'll be singing the songs throughout. Also, if you're up for some awesome kids horror, Return To Oz. It has some crap your pants horror moments and it was rated PG in 1985. I love it for that. Forget kids, that movie would scare people our ages! But Austin Powers is classic 90s raunchy comedy. We're not quite at the R rated, American Pie stuff yet, but it came out within months of this, so we're just starting to see that kind of humour in mainstream movies. Canadian content!

One of the underrated qualities of these movies is that they don't get bogged down in explaining every inconsistency in the story. Like how Basil tells Austin that they knew Vanessa was a fembot and he doesn't elaborate any further. Or how they never explain why Number Two is back in this movie despite the fact that Dr Evil killed him near the end of the first movie. And when it comes to the time travel bit, Basil literally tells the audience not to think about it. I love how self aware these movies are, lmao.
