The big fly was a Horse Fly, also known as a March Fly. They're fairly common around this time of year. The females need a feed of blood in order to lay eggs and will give you a nasty bite. You'll know if you've been bitten! They're also really, really stupid, and will sit on you for some time before they get down to the bitey bit. This delayed attack is your opportunity to swat them into the afterlife. They can sometimes be quite aggressive and will fly round and around you until finally coming in to land. Simply watch where they land, no need to rush it. Then swat the crap out of 'em.
