Earl's Court - The Venue on the Esplanade in St. Kilda. I saw so many great Australian bands there in the 80s - including Hunters, Sunny Boys, Big Pig and Lime Spiders. When they were pulling it down many years later (to make way for soul-less bland apartments) I went there late one night and stood on the footpath outside the fencing to remember, to pay homage and to give thanks. I looked at the half-demolished basilica before me which held in its bones so much music and so many stories, and I cried. I cried for my memories, and I cried because those bandrooms and those bands and those days of original Australian music being played live all over Melbourne suburbs every night will never be again. I don't think any of us could have realised just how lucky we were.

Mate, I used to go there on Wednesday nights in the early 80s and I think it was $10 for several bands and all the beer you could drink. Saw Split Enz there too. I lived near Ritchies in Cramer Street and they had great bands every Friday night. We were incredibly lucky.

I might’ve been at a few of those gigs. Earls, the Conti, PP, the Espy band room. You left out the Painters and Dockers, weddings parties anything, INXs at the Townhall… , I remember the smell of the concrete on Fitzroy street when bars closed. Drunk bastards dodging the trams while tarts wobbled out of the Prince. Ahh. So lucky we were indeed! Haha. Melbourne in the late 80s-90s wasn’t all paradise, but damn it was fun. I remember Guy at school. He was always Mr "Cool" but a nice guy underneath. Reyne was as cocky as hell and I gave him at least one detention when I was a Prefect. Bill McDonough, the drummer, was far and away the nicest. He was my Sergeant in the School Cadet Corps when I was a Corporal - a really lovely bloke. Brad Robinson was a nice fella, too. Underrated, deserved more international exposure
@jondunmore4268 Жыл бұрын
No. Not really. Look, I like Aussie bands as much as the next Aussie, but there are some that just didn't exude any "international" flavor or drive. Aussie Crawl is one such band. LRB is a great example - they definitely deserved more international fame with the original lineup, but then when they got the opportunity with Farnham, all the members seemed locked into this Aussie mindset of NOT becoming superstars, even though Farnham provided the international frontman they needed. The Angels shoulda also been international - but they were locked out when AC/DC was already providing that species to international audiences. INXS broke through precisely because they DIDN'T sound like AC/DC - and they EMBRACED the international flavor and feel. I could go on, but you get my point. Oz Crawl were just too down-home Aussie, and if anything, they would have filled a small indie niche overseas.
