Wearing little bells when hiking will make noise and prevent you from startling bears. Carrying bear pepper spray can help to deter them. Also, you should learn what bears are in the area by identifying their scat. Black bear scat is small, dark and contains bits of berries and seeds. Grizzly scat is larger, smells peppery, and may contain little bells.

Black Bear's are the most afraid of humans and generally run from us if you making enough noise. Getting in between a mother and her cubs is usually the only way to get attacked. Grizzly's generally will avoid humans, but will attach if hungry enough. eg Grizzly man, Tim Treadwell. Polar Bears do see us as food and will actively hunt humans. Luckily there range is lightly populated across northern Alaska and Canada.

2 things that I think you'll find interesting. Firstly, we're in the Shenandoah Valley and are very rural. Our home is in the territory of several black bears. We've been here 10 years and early on I had an encounter with an adult boar. I went out to my car to go to work before dawn one day and I smelled a musky odor and heard snuffling noises. When I turned around and there was a huge black bear standing about 5 feet away from me. He had been enjoying the blackberries on our fence row. He was as startled as I was. Without turning my back to him, I opened my car door and got in my car and he lumbered across the road and into the woods. A few years ago, I spotted a smaller boar in our side yard. I suspect either Boris Sr has died or Boris Jr has forced him off the territory. The other story about deer. I have a reading handicap, so when I'm alone I read out loud. The first summer we were here I read Jane Eyre whilst floating around in our pool. I noticed a small doe would come to our fence when I was reading. Eventually, she jumped the fence and browsed the honeysuckle around our fence whilst I read aloud. Our dogs, for some odd reason, ignored her. When the pool season ended my husband walked outside one afternoon and saw her looking over the edge of the closed up pool at the time of day I usually "read to her." The next summer, I read Pride and Prejudice whilst floating and she brought her fawns to our yard. "Gretal" no longer comes by, but during the summer between 1 and 4 on weekday afternoons I read aloud from the classics to Gretal daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters. My husband likes to tell people we have the most well read deer in Virginia.

Mosquitos. We spend more money for mitigating mosquito populations than on prevention of attacks by all of these other animals combined. And btw, never run from a bear. It makes them want to chase and hunt. Black bears you charge and yell and can easily scare them off usually. Brown bears you back away slowly, talking calmly, not taking your eyes off the bear (hoping there's only one). And if a brown bear charges, shoot or play dead.

The high number of deer "incidents" (>50,000) is almost certainly because of their habitat. When the wooded areas are only cleared to about 2-3 meters from roadways, and the average white-tail deer able to jump up to 10 meters, they can appear from the bush into a road in a fraction of a second.

The video didn't even mention several other animals that can be dangerous. Bison, elk, moose, and wolves are animals to avoid in Yellowstone National Park (and moose a lot of other places too). People get hurt almost yearly in YNP by getting too close to bison, which can weigh over 2,000 pounds (907 kg) and can run up to 35 mph (56 kph). Wolves are generally not dangerous to humans, but can take down prey as big as moose or bison and will also kill livestock.

I came across this video again and although I’ve already commented I wanted to mention something else. I grew up in South Georgia which a whole lot of it is just swamp. Even the parts that are more solid ground than the typical swamp the water table is still only about an inch or so beneath the surface. If there’s ANY body of water, if it’s not spring water, there WILL be gators! Guaranteed!! Every pond, lake, or river they’re there. I’ve even encountered personally a gator climbing out of the sewer through the grate thing on the curb on my neighborhood street. I’ve also had to come to a complete stop on a highway because we’d had heavy rain and the ditches on both sides were flooded so a 10 foot gator decided to cross the street when I was coming. It just walked across and slid into the water on the other side. If the body of water is fed from a spring the water is too cold for gators. People in my area used to drive the 4( miles to a river in northern Florida that was spring water so we’d tube down it. It’s called ichetucknee springs. And that was fun but it’s pretty damn cold for humans too

Deer are friendly. if you feed any deer they bring their family back daily to eat and get pet on their backs. Moose are in Deer Family and 4 times as tall and are likely to attack. Deer is mainly a threat if youre driving, they walk in the road and stop when they see headlights. In America these Animals are more deadlier: Puma/Mountain Lions, Alligators, Grizzley Bears/Larger species of Grizzley Bears called Kodiak Bears as Black bear can be scared away and only run through your trash cans, Polar Bear if you live in Alaska and 97% of/most Americans do not live in Alaska, Snakes like Rattle Snakes and Corals even though Florida has huge Pythons, Wolverines, Wolves though they aren't likely to attack humans, bees only kill if youre allergic to bee stings as you may only see a few near flowers, Scorpions, and Bison 🦬 also known as Buffalo, and thats about it. The rest won't hurt you be ause if you see a Black widow spider or Brown recluse then they only bite if you invade their space or if you don't hire pest control to spray for ants and spiders. As ants will infest a house quicker than spiders especially if you leave crumbs and mess in a kitchen.

11:20 Yeah, it doesn't seem obvious, but it is a real issue. Most rural areas have no lights at night, with speed limits 55mph and higher. The deer love to graze on the grass on the side of roads at night, so it makes a very dangerous situation. They often go straight thru windshields and kill drivers on impact. Lesser discussed is the risk of smaller animals. I have WITNESSED people swerve to avoid a rabbit or raccoon and crash. I have lost friends to it. These issues of course are not limited to America, but our roadway systems and geography do create a high number of encounters.

I also ended up coming down with a fever a couple hours after it happened and my neck, shoulder, and jaw stiffened up, it was terrible. It ranks up there on my pain scale just below breaking a bone(finger and toe), and above gashing open the webbing between two of my toes. It’s tied with busting my chin open on the side of a pool and getting chlorine water in the wound. I’m lucky I’m not allergic, my dad and grandma are allergic and if they’d gotten stung they would’ve had to go to the hospital.

I cannot describe the novelty, as an American, listening to an Australian NOPE at American wildlife, like our wildlife is dangerous in comparison to what you guys live with on a daily basis. Like, I've met bears face to face. I have bear stories. And there are people who were legitimately stupid enough to believe the cougar/puma/mountain lion they found prowling in their yard was a (large) lost housecat -- took it in, bathed it, gave it like three cans of tuna, recorded its baffled acceptance of this treatment all the while, there are pictures. So to me, bears and cougars are only moderately concerning. I'd be terrified trying to find my way around Australia, expecting to be eviscerated by a giant predatory bird or something (although as an arachnophile I'd actually like to meet some of those giant Aussie spiders, they seem cool). And for anyone who thinks I have blatant disregard for the lethality of the animals native to my country, I don't. I respect them highly, I just also know they're not *always* in kill mode and how you behave around them strongly influences how you're going to come out on the other side.

Folks don't really ever talk about the fact that a lot of bully attacks are justified based on the dog's role as a guard dog, or the fact that they're not aggressive, they're just hypervigilant and extremely sensitive (not including the overbreeding that has lead to some sub-types having neurological issues). The name of the bully game is dont fuck around and you wont find out. They are extraordinarily fierce/stupidly tenacious defenders of their people and homes (especially the children in their families) and are also very likely to get aggressive when scared rather than cut and run. I have a bully/staffy/mastiff mix, and he's super sensitive and concerned about any negative emotion in me. He will come try to soothe me if I'm crying or upset, and if he thinks I'm in danger, he goes right into fight mode. He also "locks on" to any perceived threat and won't let up until he can no longer see or hear it. If there's no threat, they're generally absolutely brilliant, goofy, empathetic, loving dogs. On my farm in the middle of nowhere, I'll always have one, because I have every faith that they would be the difference between life or death toward a predator or other human who shouldn't be wandering around my property. The way I see it, don't force them into a place or life where they're on edge 24/7, and you've got yourself the best ride or die companion you could hope for
@malia184818 күн бұрын
Also wanted to add that a neighbor of mine has 3 pit bulls who attacked a trespasser recently. He barely made it out alive and a lot of people outside the community wanted the dogs put down. But everyone in my area was 100% behind her and her 3 good boys. They did exactly what they were supposed to do to someone who should have never been there. Again, don't fuck around and you won't find out. Just... also make sure you have a strong fence so any perceived threat isn't met with deadly force until it's an actual threat

Eh, you've got the gimpy gimpy. And anzac biscuits. So it balances out. Our visiting Australian friends tended to get poison ivy, which is itchy and irritating but not life threatening. "Seriously; the PLANTS?" Yep the plants we've got several. we both have spiders, bugs, and snakes. Just more of ours are non venomous. Horses; yes, but we have accidents while USING them; they rarely just....randomly attack. COwS? Are you serious? Just....move out of their way. Deer...that's car wrecks, usually. Again they don't HUNT US DOwN. Deer kill people due to the traffic accidents, correct. they are colloquially referred to as "road beef." I stick to two chooks. Thanks for your reaction!
