I've just always been told that if you speak spanish it's somewhat familiar to understand Portuguese but that Portuguese speakers understand spanish easier it was more about understanding the language than trying to learn it but I figured if you understand it, then it should be easier to learn perhaps

I played around with the Berlitz language program on an airplane one time and with my experience learning French, I recognized a lot of words in Br-Portuguese, so it was really exciting to me, but also I absolutely love the Brazil football team for many years, so I already have a desire to visit Brazil one day, which is more of the reason why I want to learn that one first. "Nosa Nosa Asi voce Me mata" lol

I'm not a native french speaker, but I am part french. I have studied the language over 10 yrs and I recognized a ton of words instantly my first day being exposed to Brazilian Portuguese. It's such a blended language that there's more than just Spanish in it that can help someone ease into the learning experience, such as Italian, German, English, and apparently a little bit of Japanese Oddly enough for me, I already speak English... I've studied French and German because that's my heritage, and I've studied Japanese as well. Soooo haha it seems really fitting for me

This is incredible and inspirational! I'm Australian too, and somehow we share 4 languages in total! 🇦🇺🇮🇩🇩🇪🇮🇹 (maybe I should learn French and Spanish now..🤔) I've never lived in Indonesia, but my parents speak it, and it was the first language I learnt. Whilst I've forgotten a lot as well, I'm making an effort to learn it again. I've learnt German on my own, and Italian at school, and I must say your German is super impressive. I hope that I can be like you one day..😄 I've got many years to do so luckily, but it's going to take a lot of effort to get to the level of proficiency that you've attained in each of these languages.

By the way, my mom's experience with German is so similar to yours with Indonesian. She was born in Germany and spent the first 6 years of her life there, so she spoke German fluently, and then came to Spain and completely forgot it. So don't feel guilty, it's normal to forget a language.

You have an excellent pronunciation in all the languages I know... can’t say much about bahasa Indonesia. How do you work with your pronunciation ? Do you have some tips or suggestions? Also you can actually speak them, you’re at least b2 in every language ... you might be slow at times but you can really express yourself quite well even in the weaker ones... well done!
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! To be honest, I don't spend a long time consciously working on my pronunciation. But I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I learn new words, I practise saying them out loud (sometimes several times). Nowadays the Internet is also very helpful - there are so many dictionaries with audio files. Well... I think there's a big difference among my languages haha. I have (or at least HAD) a C2 level in French and German, but I think I'm only A2 in Italian and Indonesian ;).
@naakatube6 жыл бұрын
Yes I can relate I used to be more advanced in several languages but it’s hard to maintain them all!! I can definitely imagine that you were once c2, and now just c1. I guess that for the pronunciation it really helps that you learned some foreign languages rather early on, while the sound recognition skills of children are unrivaled... I learned my second foreign language just at 28...

Once you had become fairly experienced in a particular language like Español, for example, did regional accents become more obvious to you as well? In the beginning, when I first started speaking Spanish, it all pretty much sounded exactly the same regardless of who was speaking it. But, as I gained more experience, I began to notice the difference regional inflections of those who were speaking. Like the differences between a Mexican accent versus a Puerto Rican accent. In the beginning I could not hear it at all but after many years, the different sounding accents have become quite apparent. Have you experienced anything like this?
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely! In the beginning, it all sounds the same, particularly if there's a lot you still don't understand. I then started hearing the differences little by little. And then I was at a stage where I thought: How could I have NOT heard those differences? lol Especially, say, between the French spoken in France and Quebecois.

Max , after watching this amazing video I'm blown away by your language learning skills. I could actually be one of your ESL students. I was born in Colombia a long time ago. Spanish is my mother tongue. In my frenetic desire to learn English, I came to lose some fluency in my native tongue. I studied phonetics fully mastering the I. P. A . I had a million questions about the pronunciation of certain words that nobody could answer. American dictionaries listed a variety of variants for a given word , but they were never in agreement as to which pronunciation was the most acceptable. Within a time period of say ten years ,some of the preferred pronunciations ( The preferred pronunciation is always the one listed first) had all changed. Pronunciation became the Bete Noire of English book publishers. In the last 30 years or so there has been only one book dedicated to controversies regarding English pronunciation. The title of that book is "The Big Book of Beastly Pronunciations" by Charles Harrington Elster. . Now I speak fluent non-accented American English, but I'm interested in how English is spoken in other English speaking countries including Australia and New Zealand and in knowing how the language has changed in those countries. I think that you're the best qualified teacher to answer what you'd consider the best pronunciations for a list of words that I could provide for you. Then You could make a video directed to English language teachers on what you deem the best pronunciations for the English speaking world as whole. I want English to continue to be world's international language.
@357QueenBee6 жыл бұрын
I find it funny that I hear your French as your native language more than English. My native is Spanish. English second. I'm equally fluent in both. I took French in college and I was able to understand practically everything you spoke in French. Great French accent. Although speaking is more important than having accent at the end of the day. I'm 53 and started learning Russian on my own for a year and a half and I feel that I'm moving along. Not as fast as if with a teacher. So we share the love if learning languages. Me parece que hablas muy bien español. Eso de me pones es coloquial. Mi español es de América así que hay muchas palabras y modismos españoles que no entendemos. Así que ese error le pasa a cualquiera.
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! Yes, I agree that fluency and breadth of vocabulary are more important than having a good accent :). All the best with your Russian! From what I've heard, it's not the easiest language to learn :S.

Wow! I had to comment on this. I've watched tons of videos with people claiming to speak multiple languages and I've always been waiting for them to speak french, in other to have some idea of which level they really called "fluent" and obviously, ended up kind of disappointed so to speak; but again, wahoo! ton francais est d'une perfection sans nom. Non pas bon genre "fairly good for a non-native speaker" mais plutot genre "you really sound like a native in the way that I don't even know if I must talk to you in english or in french", yes, she is that fluent. I've always considered french the most difficult language to learn IN THE WORLD (for the most learned languages). I'm learning Mandarin Chinese now as a third language (with Italian on the side) which I'd been said was the most difficult in the world and every day I tell to my self "wow, there is no way I could change Mandarin with french!". That gives you an idea. Anyway, I'm very impressed with your french. I will watch the german part in a few years once I finish with Mandarin and Italian and start with german. Bonne chance a nous!

Congrats! Gotta say that the 'me pones' bit in Spanish does actually happen to us as well. You know we say mmm too often between any two words, so we would definitely create an awkward pause there once in a while if we are not quite sure about what to order. I have a similar experience with Italian and Portuguese. A taught Spanish to my Italian ex girlfriend and so I got the (very) basics (she learnt beautifully, though). On Portuguese, my other first language is Galician, witch used to be the same language as Portuguese ages ago, so by encountering Portuguese speakers back when living in London I also got some of it. But I am bad at both. I would be interested on your perspective for comparing Italian and Spanish grammar. I find them quite similar, so I focused mainly on vocabulary. But as none of them are your first language you can probably make more interesting observations

I was gunna say that too. I'm Canadian and I've been living in Australia for a decade and she doesn't have any Australian accent I've ever heard. Probably picked up a lot of accent from her time overseas learning languages.

Haha, thanks. I know we can't complain too much because there are lots of benefits of being a native English speaker, but yes, it can be a battle sometimes when you want to practise another language. :)

Today, I'm learning swedish and I find it very funny. Tschüss !

I’ve been struggling with the German language for years, but I have a hard time to learn it. I can understand few words in a sentence; that’s it. Pronunciation is the horrible 😂mixed &messed up. Oh! I must have forgotten to mention that I have no clue about Indonesian language. Congrats on your accomplishments! Bravo 👏💐❤️

¡Impresionante! Estoy tan impresionado, Max. Anyone who has learned to speak multiple languages, tells me of the focused dedication, hard yards and sacrifices it must have taken to accomplish such wonders. Turkçe and Español are languages sweet to my ear. Spanish, from Spain, is part of my heritage. I'm teaching myself with the help of books and Dúolingo. I watch a lot of movies/series in these languages which I find is a great help. On paper, I find the languages easy to read, translate and interpret but go 'BLANK' when I come across native speakers that I so desire to be able to converse with. It really frustrates me! I may find it extra helpful if I join social clubs where they only speak in these languages. I'll be totally immersed and more or less forced to try harder to converse. Wish me luck! Greetings from a Kiwi who's lived in Brisbane Australia for near on 24 years:)

Hi, Max, I am not used to clicking the caption button in your videos. You speak so clearly that I understand you very well. And, when I watched this video for the first time a few days ago, I understood only small part of it. Today, I clicked caption button and finally, I got everything. To tell the truth, I admire you for your language knowledge (but not only for it). Let me take off my hat in front of you.(pls correct)

Este es genial! Gracias por tu vídeo. Actualmente estoy aprendiendo español y traté no leer los subtítulos 👍 I got a laugh out of your mistakes in the different languages. It’s hard to break past the fear of embarrassment (not the same thing as embarazada as I found out 😂) when learning a new language. In my 30s, seriously attempting a new language for the first time in my life I have a newfound respect for those that deal with talking outside of their native language and comfort zone. As an Australian living in a town that attracts a lot of migrant workers, it has taught me to be much more patient. They are braver with their broken English than I am with my spanish! X
