@@ciaronsmith4995 I say this as a huge Agassi fan, but Sampras' serve is the single most dominant shot in the history of tennis. Dude was serving bombs with the limited racket technology of the day. And not just the serve speed, but his placement was unreal and his service motion was so repetitive that it was hard to know just where he was going with it. Yes, his overall game was more limited than the other all-time greats, but he also had a knack for playing huge from the baseline on big points, especially that running forehand, and he hurt Agassi badly with that shot on so many big points in big matches. Other than in Australia, you just always got the sense that Pete was going to find a way against Andre.

@@tonyhughes110 It wasn't just that they were powerful - they were tough to read too. Sampras' serve is dominant but his game is incomplete. Terrible backhand, too dependent on serve and volley and never won the French. Agassi was better.
@tonyhughes110
@tonyhughes110 6 ай бұрын
@@ciaronsmith4995 A lot of fantastic players never won the French, though. It was a different sport back then. The French, on clay, was drastically different from Wimbledon and the US Open, much more so than it is now. Now with the racket technology, slower courts everywhere, and even slower balls, physicality and defensive tennis is much more a part of the action. Tennis is largely a baseline war now. I appreciated the serve-and-volley games of the power players on the grass and hard courts back then. It provided a great contrast in matches with baseliners. Don't get me wrong, I still love to watch tennis now, but I will never love to watch it as much as I did in the Agassi era.

Singles tennis matches are always between 2 people, you can’t say “Sampras let it slip away” cause that implies that there was no opposition at the other side of the net.
