I'm Aussie and dislike Halloween. It's really no mystery why....it was never a thing here until recently and felt like it was pushed by retailers to sell plastic junk that will end up in landfill the day after.

In Australia we teach kids not to talk or take anything from strangers so Halloween goes against that it's like( telling your kids not to take lollies from strangers but Halloween is the exception ) its just asking for trouble

Pagan origins aside, Halloween just isn’t a thing for either side of our Australian family, nor many Aussies generally. But kids (and a good deal of adults) do like dressing up for whatever reason so I don’t have issues with others celebrating it as long as they don’t drag people into it who don’t wish to take part. I think most Aussies can respect the “you do your thing, I’ll do mine” principle.

I think the majority of the world agrees with you do you and I’ll do me… problem is we all got idiots and they are sinking the ship faster then anticipated 😂

Why should Australia celebrate Halloween? How much American culture should we import into Australia? Should Australia celebrate Thanksgiving Day too? And Independence Day on the 4th of July? Should Aussies carry guns and shoot up schools? Should we adopt American spelling? Should we rebrand our chemists as drug stores? Should we abolish Medicare? Aussies don't hate Halloween as such, but there is resistance to adopting something just because it is the done thing in the USA (even though it didn't originate there). If Aussies want to celebrate Halloween then good luck to them, Aussies can celebrate Chinese New Year or any other nations thing too if they wish. But there shouldn't be any expectation to participate and be bugged by door knockers wanting free lollies. Or should we start calling lollies candy? Maybe we should stop calling everyone mate and say dude instead...

You do realise that trick-or-treating originated in Scotland and Ireland, not America.

It’s hard to get excited about Halloween when you didn’t grow up with it. When I was young Halloween was only noticeable via American sitcoms. It seems to be growing in that many more people are celebrating it but the trick or treat part is still very rare. I have seem some impressive decorations this year.
@alexandratuohey4 күн бұрын
@@Raven6794 yes I think the not having nostalgic childhood memories about it is a big factor! That’s one of the main reasons that I wanted our kids to get around it - my Aussie husband was very neutral about the whole thing 😅

And the Halloween episodes of the sitcoms weren't shown on Australian television at the appropriate time either, likely March or April the next year.

Halloween in Australia is like trying to kick start that 30 year old mini bike that just won't get going. ps your kids did look they had a pretty good time though, nice.

Australia has always celebrated Halloween, but the trick or treat thing not so much. We traditionally would just watch spooky movies etc. Rather than Trick or Treat, I would watch The Headless Horseman and other similar films.

Halloween is replacing our traditions in Portugal and that is very sad. Not on the eve but on the 1st of November, allsaints day, kids would go ask for Pão-por-Deus, "Bread for God's Sake" and would get some traditional cakes and biscuits that varied according to the part of the country, nuts, chestnuts, candy and maybe a little money. This has the same celtic (the celts are one of our ancestor ethnic groups) origin but is more christianised and it has a more communal flavour to it as richer members of a community were expected to contribute with a more abundant gift to the poorer children (or their social prestige would suffer). Godparents had a specific obligation to give some money and a traditional food item (in my parents area its a flat bread baked with olive oil but in other parts of the country is other traditional regional baked goods sweet or savory, and a blessing to their godchildren. There are also "meal sharing with the dead" traditions of some parts of Portugal that are disapearing under the halloween influence: the setting of an extra dinner setting for your departed, or the setting aside of some food for the dead (that is not to be had by anyone else after)

It's mostly Gen Y Australians that hate Halloween, because they're the first generation expected to be givng out lollies instead of receiving them; give it a few years and Halloween will normalise in Australia.
