Being Austrian, I am sad to not have seen the high alpine training and operations. A story, maybe a tale, I have heard from someone within the military was that a group of US military joined the Austrians in high alpine training. The US soldiers (of course swole AF) poked fun at the Austrians for being rather skinny. Then when it came to hiking and climbing up mountain ranges, one after another US soldier had to give in and admit that being jacked doesnt mean that you automatically are performing better in these kind of scenarios. As I said, might have been tale :)
@XpVersusVista2 жыл бұрын
given that the US sf's always think they're better this sounds very likely. 2015 i believe the delta's joined in the biggest SF competition in the World (an international competition held in germany) and only ranked in the upper middle of all the competing SFs (Like GSG9, GIGN, SAS and so forth). They were so pissed they rioted in 2 bars and caused a whole lot of property damage that had to be paid for by the US military.

The Austrian army is part militia, including Jagdkommando soldiers. The militia is exempt from grooming standards. It's a pity they didn't show the real Jagdkommando training. Especially the high mountain training is much more impressive than the scenes shown here. But of course these kinds of videos are made to attract new soldiers, so they tend not to show the hard stuff.

Grooming standards should allow epic 'staches. :) Seriously though, that type of large mustache is a very traditional military mustache (as in centuries of tradition) in military forces around the world. It's the same way in that the U.S. Navy as recent as the early 80's allowed sailors to have beards as long as they were well trimmed. As a kid I knew a naval Captain who sported a beard. I thought it looked very professional and made him look like a true ship captain with that beard. Sadly they did away with that policy. :(

You get 9 months basic training first, then 1 year extended training which serves as selection process, 1 hellweek where you also get tortured and make an escape simulationg being a prisoner of war, and if you pass all of that it is 3 years Jagdkommando training and at the end of it 1 year in your chosen speciality before you are really done. (Sniper, Combat diver, etc.) So before you are fully "Jagdkommando" you have roughly 6 years from start to finish. The name Jagtkommando goes back to a cople of tratitions some dating back as far as the early 18th century. Back then the german speaking nations like hessia saxoni prussia and the austrian empire, among others reciuted light infantry troops for skirmishing, securing the flanks, recon and other tasks like that. They had to work independently, and had to be good shots familiar with the use of rifles. The military of the time thought people that guy that used similar skills in there provesional life would be perfect as such soilders and manly recuited profesional hunters (jäger in german) and therefore called them jäger. This concept was picked up by britain in the mid 18th century turing the french and indian war and seven years war witch lead to the founding of diverend ranger bataillons like the famous rogers rangers. At that time many of the members of these rangers where of german origin since quite a few of the settlers where german even at that time. But that might be less suprising concidering that the king was of german origin him selfe. Inspite of the success of the rangers in america they where suspendet with the end of the war. But the concept continued to flowrish in europe. In austria the border to the ottoman emire was where we had the grenzjäger that where also admired by napolen him selfe when the later fought aginst him turing the revolution and later napoleonic wars. Turing the the war of independence the german troops that where send over to america from the english kings possesions in germany and his allies there hat a large condingent of Jägers with them witch lead to the founding of the 60th (american) rifles, that ironicaly was almost exclusivly german for most of it's haydays, the famous 95th that later gained fame turing wellingtons spanish campaing and refounding of rogers rangers as queens rangers. Thes regiments where very sucsessfull but the most feared where "hessian" Jägers allthough most where from hanover. Many of them chanced sides and became part of what is the nucleus of todays US Army Rangers. In austria the grenzjäger did not survive the demice of the ottoman empire on the balkans and the army reforms of the late 19th century but the name and traditions connected with it where picked up for the austrian equivilalent of the sturmtruppen in ww1. And then after 1945 the bundesheer picked that name because of the ww1 glorry that came with it and the conection to all the earlier Jägers for its SF regiment.

During the French-Indian wars the French Colonists and Indians(Algonquins) used Jaeger tactics and even took then British Captain George Washington captive. Later during US revolution US general Benedict Arnold attacked Quebec City against French Canadian(Jaeger) Coureurs de bois and Hurons(Hunters)which defeated with a small contigent(77) the 800 US revolutionaires, and Benedict Arnold fled leaving 400 dead and wounded behind. The Term „Jäger“ (i.e. „Hunter“ in English) for light infantry units historically comes from the first light infantry units, that were not used with the „line tactics“ in open field battles / shootouts. They were utilized for flank protection in forests in smaller units. The soldiers that were used to form those new units often were actual hunters and forest rangers. They knew how to handle their rifle, were proficient shooters and knowledgeable in the woods and very Good in Land Navigation.

Our Main battle tanks Leopard 2 A4 are old and just in duty to keep the knowledge of tank warfare, same in artillery and so on. @@JamesonsTravels Just a little detail of Jagdkommando's history: It must have been in the late 50ies when an Austrian officer got the order to build up special forces. He went to the US to train with the US Army Rangers. Then came back and took their training as a foundation for a specialized education, adapted to their needs. Half a century later the Jagdkommando became THE reference for maneuvers in alpine terrain. They train mountain infantries all over Europe.

He joined as an E1 and by the time he was done with training (3 years later) he was an E5 (Sergeant) promotable.

The older guys you see in this video are the commanders and those serving since many years , its tv stuff after all . Most applicants to the Jagdkommando are actually around 18 years old and give it a go during national service . After the entry test there is a 6 month basic training course and after this course they go straight into the SF selection course . The Jagdkommando is derived from the US Rangers wich trained a few officers i believe in the 60s or 70s . With the combined knowledge they created an austrian way to do things . Our police special unit has a similar story, as the swat way wasnt really working for us but provided invaluable knowledge . BTW: Usualy our operators are well shaved , for many reasons any soldier understands .

A little anecdote to what could be seen as regular forces: Austria has a conscript army (chronically underfinanced for the last 150 years). There's also a one-year-volunteers program for people who reach a certain educational background, which i took part in. (The program is over 150 years old i think). During our 3rd month of infantery training, we took part in a big training exercise. (to be clear: It was our 3rd month of service and we trained 5 1/2 days a week.) Even the Jagdkommando took part. Sadly i got lend to another platoon to be used as messenger. (yes the poor idiot that has to run, crawl ect. with messages, instead of using radio communication... we still trained that 20 years ago) And in a little pause for me, i sat next to the radio guy (you guessed it, most of the meters i made were redundant anyway) and heard via the attached speaker, that guys from my platoon asked what to do with the prisoners they had taken. When asked who they got, the answere was: "2 guys from the Jagdkommando"😎. There was a long silence on the radio... Radio guy and I had a good laugh. -> Never underestimate your opponent.
@snakeenjoyingacanofbeans52193 жыл бұрын
@@nirfz It sounds like they used some creative thinking. We did some training with the British as our Adversary Force. They took two guys in an outpost prisoner and wore their cammies into the FOB. Nice video. The man with the moustache is a moderator from a local radio station. Because of the sort of special units we have. We have no FBI but if there is an incident with weapons or highly critical situations we have the EKO Cobra which is like SWAT (tactical police unit) inside Austria. In cases of terror like in 2020 in Vienna or political visitors the Jagdkommando also assist the local forces. Finally, we have the WEGA which is a specially trained team inside the Vienna police which is taking care of self-harm, high-risk arrests and things that have overall a higher risk level.
