I had plug overheating too. Turned out it was because I had a Leviton outlet from Home Depot. Replaced with a commercial grade outlet from an electrical supply store and no more overheating.

@@DirtyTesla I don't really know. I didn't notice the messages for a long time, so it could have been right away or it could have taken time. If the problem is due to the outlet, it should be consistent. It's weird that it took you a long time to develop this issue

Same thing happened to me. Replace with a better/higher quality receptacle and issue is fixed. I talked to an electrician and he said the only thing he could think of is that some of the lower prices receptacles are designed for aluminum wire is stead of copper. He said always ho with the highest quality available.
@GregHassler
@GregHassler 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually fairly common for the terminals to just come loose through ambient temperature changes and heating/cooling from charge cycles. Just open up both the receptacle and the panel and check the tightness of the connections.

I got the mobile charger included with mine and it works well but they could do a far more optimized dirt cheap 16A mobile one so there is no cost to including it. You just have the relay in the handle, no box midway. Just a plug and normal 2 lead wire. Super dirt cheap, very useful. Fits easily in the car. At least here in Europe you are not going to find a mains plug that can do 32A anyway. I charge my car limited to 5A because it's a shared plug and I don't want to overload it and I think I could do 5x the amount of driving I'll need limited to 5A and 10X if you use the full 10A so... optimization is king.

We bought a Juicebox Pro 40 amp when we bought our 2018 Leaf and I've thought about getting a Tesla Wall Connector for the handy-dandy button and 48 amps when we bought our 2021 Model Y, but I've just been using our Juicebox with the Tesla J1772 adaptor and it still works great and I didn't want something hardwired in case we move. The only pain is taking the adaptor off every time after it's done charging because we still have the Leaf, but it's better than spending another $400.

Keen to see charging efficiency difference between 32A and 40A from your TeslaFi data. Not expecting much. On Model Y, 32A might even be better because it can run 2x16A chargers at full rather than 3x13.3A for 40A. Model X with 3x24A charger certainly should improve. 32A is the limit on single phase here in Australia. Beyond that 400V 3-phase is required. Thanks for the km/h vid, 10m person lol.

Interesting video Chris. You drive the car a lot so faster charging makes sense for you. I charge my new refreshed Model S using the mobile connector between midnight & 6 AM (cost 3 cents per KWH) and it works fine for me. We charge every 3 weeks or so. What did you install on your garage floor? Looks nice.

Yeah anothet factor. We do a lot of driving. And it also matches with the solar really well. The floor is racedeck. Doing a video on that soon! I was going to finish it first but the last line next to the wall I'll probably not do for months 🤣

@@robkeshav800 I’m curious how solar credits work in Michigan. In California we get credits for energy sent back equal to cost at that time (I’m under NEM 2). For example my energy plan has three rates with cheapest being from 12am-6am so we almost always charge at this time since the solar energy we send back during day is worth more which earns a net credit.
@robkeshav800

@@notalenthere I am not sure how the credit works in MI. Perhaps Chris might shed some light on it. Here in KS we are on TOD (time of day) plan where we pay 3 cents PKWH from midnight to 6am like yours.

I have a similar setup except with a ClipperCreek J1772 EVSE. I keep my adapter on all the time as well, works great. EV Dave claims that you need to disconnect the adapter from the cable when not in use. Not sure I understand why, it's worked fine for me for 4 years.

I’ve been using the standard TSLA mobile charger for 4 years now. Now on a second car. Charges at 32 A 28 MPH every time. I’m running it on a dedicated 40A circuit. I can’t justify the extra money to upgrade for just a few MPH.

If your circuit is 40 amp, this would still be limited to 32 amps anyway. You can only run 80% rated load continuously

I think your overheating could be the nema outlet. There’s different ratings of the same 14-50 outlet. You need a commercial one. Your outlet could melt and cause a house fire. May want to check that.

I've been using the outlet 3.5 years. While they can become loose over time, the charging unit itself was saying *it* was overheating. Since installing this new charger, and charging at 40 amps vs 32, I have not had a single error.

Tesla Wall Connector charges up to 72 amps in older Model X's. Many are fine with the Tesla Wall Connector at 48 amps for the Model 3. No point in looking for alternative chargers unless you're also second guessing Tesla. Not until the day I would seriously consider a car other than Tesla, would I ever consider an alternate charger other than the Tesla Wall Connector. That seems like at least 20 years away or longer.

Chris, if you lived in suburbia without a garage, and your EV could be seen from the street, would you hardwire your EVSE or stick with the Tesla "mobile" connector so that you can take it inside the house when not in use or when you are away?

Hmm that's a good thought. I mean like anything else, I think it'd be fine for hardwired. I guess because it's novel people could be more attracted, but there's other things around people could mess with that we don't think about.

I don't own a Tesla nor know much about the charging but wouldn't a Tesla Powerwall be the best solution to charging at home? Albeit expensive.
@JeanPierreWhite

Not a great idea. A powerwall stores up to 13.5 kWh. A Tesla battery is often 75 kWh or more. You would totally deplete the powerwall and may not even get a decent charge.

You can connect them to 100a, but they can only deliver max 48a to a vehicle. They can then communicate and power share whatever amperage they are hooked to. Say you have 2 and can deliver 50a total, if you charge 2 cars, they'll do 25a each

You didn’t say whether your socket is 110v or 220v - that makes a big difference to the power at 40A. It’s all 230-240v here so not something we have to consider. All the EVSE can do is tell the car what the max is and then it’s the car which decides how to ramp and what it draws within the max dictated by the EVSE (charger as you call it!). It is important that the wiring is rated high enough, not just the breaker. It is a dangerous area to be providing open-ended advice without a bundle of caveats. Getting it wrong is a likely route to home fires.
