I am Jamaican and most of our traditional food comes from Africa. We call this plant Sorrel. The name is derived from an Anancy story which is a local folklore. It is a special drink made with ginger , pimento and sweetened with sugar. It is ususally consumed st Christmas time but is had all year round by many. Fabulous drink

I love this drink. I only discovered it two years ago and I had never looked back. Pineapple gives is a different tropical flavour including cloves and ginger. At times I use oranges and lemon tea leaf. Also, recently I learnt that hibiscus on its own soaked in water is a good source of hair tonic. You can also make it as a hair oil with hibiscus. Maybe from your country it's pronounced Jamaica, being Latina myself , it's pronounced Ha-Mika. No need to rinse. Just cover with boiling water as you would tea. Wait 3 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Can add More water to dilute if flavor is too acidic. Has 32% more vitamin C then an orange just by itself. We serve hot or cold, sometimes with sliced oranges. Helps collagen in the body. Will try your recipe as I'm a woman who's open to new taste experience. And just thought to share with you a cultural experience of thousands of years from my country. Thank you for sharing yours. I grow my own Roselle and this fall picked baskets and baskets of caylx (part of the flower) that is used to dry for tea. I only had 11 plants from seed planted in July and by November, I had picked and dried way more than I would ever use in a year so have been giving it away. I also drink it for the Vitamin C since I've heard it is 7 times richer than oranges and I live in Florida where I can grow oranges. Anyway, I like it warm (a couple tablespoons steeped in hot water for up to an hour, then strained, add sugar, ginger, and cinnamon - YUM. I have also got a huge pitcher in my refrigerator that I put a cup of dried leaves in 2 cups of cold water to steep for several hours, then strain and add 6 more cups of water and sugar drinking it over ice. I see you have mixed spices in and now I've tried it with cinnamon and brown sugar and cloves and ginger. That is delicious! I need to find out about all those other benefits you mentioned. I pulled the annual plants out after the first frost but saved seeds for next year - what a wonderful and very 'giving' plant. I now wish I had saved the stems with all the immature flowers and cut them just before the frost. They would make fantastic flower arrangements for Christmas. I also know the leaves are very healthful but taste as sour as rhubarb so if eaten I smeared butter over the top and sprinkled sugar into the butter. They were good then and it cancelled the sourness. I just found your channel and can't wait to see other videos. Today, I dried 10 pounds of onions in my dehydrator to make powder as I dearly love the homemade taste over store bought! One tip is to get one of the onion choppers at Amazon. I cut all the onions in less than 20 minutes - easy peasy but I do dehydrate outside, also. LOL I save the skins and tops and bottoms for making soup and I save the skins and cores from my pineapple to make vinegar - my favorite vinegar is pineapple. Add water to the jar of peeling, 1/2 cup of sugar and stir everyday and in about 10 days I have a really yummy vinegar.

In Jamaica, we call it sorrel. We usually make it simple and refreshing by boiling it with ginger and a small amount of pimento seeds. Then we add sugar and fresh lime/lemon while sweetening. We don't usually make it spicy like yours, but I heard in Trinidad it is made similar to yours. I will try adding pineapple skins next time when I boil it for a different flavor.

In Jamaica this is our Christmas drink . It's called sorrel and it's from the Hibiscus family of plants. This is our method of making sorrel similar to yours. Wash sorrel , add water , ginger and cloves . Simmer under low heat for about 15 minutes. Sometimes we add about a teaspoon of rice for quick fermentation . Leave overnight and strain then sweeten with granulated sugar. Add red wine to your taste and a dash of white rum. Chill or serve over ice . Will try your version with the pineapple .

In Jamaica we call it sorrel and how we prepare it is by washing it Put a big pot of water on to boil and you can add few pieces of orange peel while water is boiling beat or blend ginger. Add to boiling water Let the ginger boil for about two mins then turn the stove off. Pour the sorrel in and cover let it stand overnight In the morning strain it add some cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and a little vanilla also sugar to taste. Some people add rum and wine but i don't Then put in refrigerator to cool and ' wala' Very tasty Don't take my word Try it

This is another keeper. Soaked the leaves last night and made them today. Thanks for the tip on adding the ginger and pepper mixture slowly. If you slack small, it’ll be super hot. In jamaica we call this Sorrel. We boil the water and add the sorrel usually the fresh ones and add ginger and all spice berries. Then when it's cooled we mix with sugar and white rum. The rum is optional. And also red label wine. It's really delicious
