On the difference between combat sports and self defense or Traditional martial arts : One thing that is also overlooked, that I rarely hear anyone talk about is that combat sports have not only rules, but dominant tactics that shape the way everybody fights in that respective ruleset. You can try to get exotic but you have to be a genius to fight outside the dominant tactics but also inside the ruleset and make it work consistently, basically inventing a new dominant tactic (it happened, but it rare). If you don't know them and haven't mastered them you're basically f***d in that sport, regardless of your general skills. Real life violence has a much wider range of expressions, and the dominant tactics will vary greatly depending on the context and situation... The skills developped in TMA are less specialized but useful in pretty much any context, you'll alway benefit from an iron shirt, being well rooted, flexible, able to change and adapt, have efficient ways to express power in any directions etc...

Too many variables to answer this question. Do both people have gear for example? I was trained with no gear. For example, I was trained in traditional Chinese martial arts with no protection, and I fought full contact with no protection. I literally have no experience with gloves. Also, we often practiced and sparred around furniture to simulate a real life environment. Are there rules? What about the pressure testing experience of both opponents? Are weapons allowed? There's just really no way to properly say if Shaolin kung fu and compete with MMA.
@AuthenticShaolin13 күн бұрын
@blockmasterscott it was more of a rhetorical question. More for us to contemplate that we are more similar than different.

MMA means Mixed Martial Arts if you really know shall then one in the same Shaolin is full of mixed martial arts from around the world weapons 2
@angelloakira13 күн бұрын
No there is. Because the difference is when a kung fu guy puts on gloves he says the gloves get in the way. But MMA guy still works with or without gloves
@shifubrowne13 күн бұрын
@angelloakira shaolin sanda uses gloves not sure what u mean.
@blockmasterscott13 күн бұрын
@@shifubrowne I think the poster misunderstood my comment about my training not having gloves. I was just saying that it wasn't easy to compare two different fighting styles because of all the variables in forms of training.

This is a rediculas comparison shaolin uses hardened hand skills as it's main weapon and definitely not allowed 80% disarm MMA is a mainly grapplers art with a Thai boxing type leg added on its like comparing a piano to a motorbike saying they both make noise they both have their own design purposes but are meant for quite different purposes If I was a horse trader the whole thing is too the MMA advantage as dragging a piano onto a bike track has little going for fine music

The title is very silly and misleading
@AuthenticShaolin13 күн бұрын
@shifubrowne not misleading at all. I train Shaolin, and I was sparing with a Pro MMA fighter and had a great time. We trained, fought, and learned from each other. Not sure what was misleading. Thanks for your comment.
