Welcome to the Busysuperhuman -Dr Sara Pugh
Professor Michael Crawford’s has published over 300 scientific papers the topic of nutrition, seafood, brain health, fats, omega 3, fishoils, DHA, quantum biology, marine life, and health. His work focuses around the cause of the rise in brain disorders, mental illness, autism, dementia, depression, memory problems and neurodevelopmental disorders
1989 he founded the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition as the research arm of his charity The Mother and Child Foundation.
Professor Michael Crawford is a pioneer in human nutrition research and a world-leading authority in the field of fatty acids and lipids in particular, their role in human brain development and evolution, and the implications of maternal nutrition for mental health.

Critical Role of DHA in Neural Signaling and Vision
DHA is vital for signaling systems in the brain's synapses, neurons and photoreceptors, involved in vision, cognition, learning and memory. DHA deficiency studies in animals and infants show drops in visual acuity, cognitive skills and hippocampal development. Uniquely, DHA's quantum properties enable tunneling electrons to transmit signals with precise energy levels required in the brain.
Maternal DHA Intake Linked to Infant Cognition
Human milk contains DHA and arachidonic acid across diverse populations, indicating its importance for infant brain development. Multiple randomized controlled trials found infant cognition, vision, motor skills and behavior at 8 years correlated to mothers' DHA status during pregnancy. Yet governments provide no guidelines supporting DHA for brain health.
Need to Agriculturalize Oceans for Seafood Sustainability
Fish catches are declining while farmed fish contain less DHA due to feed changes. With islands well positioned for mariculture, countries should follow Japan's lead in ocean farming of seaweed and fish to expand sustainable seafood production, repopulate marine deserts and achieve food self-sufficiency.
Shrinking Human Brain Size and Mental Health Decline
The human brain has shrunk by over 300 cubic cm in the past 30,000 years, now averaging 1336 cc compared to 1500-1700 cc previously. The brain size drop correlates to surging mental disorders, signaling the lack of brain nutrition as the most urgent threat from environmental mismatches.

Because of this interview with the brilliant 94-year-old Professor Crawford, I have just finished reading all 385 pages of "The Shrinking Brain." As the author of "Inside the Dementia Epidemic: A Daughter's Memoir" (2012), I wish I and my mother had known about the importance of eating DHA-rich fish and seafood at least several times a week; perhaps that essential brain food could have helped her avoid cognitive impairment. At least now, eating sardines, canned wild-caught salmon, or mackerel for lunch routinely Monday through Friday, I have the opportunity at age 59 to bolster my own brain health. Let's hope that experts in nutrition, public health and ocean farming will listen to the authors' recommendations. Thank you to Dr. Crawford, his co-author David Marsh, and Dr. Pugh, along with her colleagues in quantum biology who have been extolling the virtues of DHA for some time.

I wondered briefly about Dr Crawford's age as soon as he mentioned he'd started work on DHA in 1971. :) He is so sharp and on the ball for someone we (or I at least) imagine a 94 year old might be. Thanks so much to the both of you for a fantastic interview!

I can tell he wrote it with seniors in mind as well as the lay person - which is not easy to do with his knowledge

About chicken eggs, I used to have a great local source. The farmer would graze cows. Then let the manure sit for several days. When the fly eggs had hatched into maggots, he'd move in the bus converted into a chicken coop. Those eggs had to have been full of DHA. But sadly, he retired and none of his children wanted to take over the business.

Thought provoking! I live in the rain forest of the Pacific Northwest US, where first peoples here have such intense need driving them to consume, and steward, migratory salmon and lamprey. So much wisdom seems inherent in how they prehistorically lived in this land, with many millennia of use and conservation. I have been fascinated by trying to understand the marine proximity resource environment benefits compared to the risk/benefits of when some first moved inland perhaps 20 to 25 thousand years ago. And, what quantum biology influences were at play. DHA/EPA now takes on even more importance in my mind. It would be interesting to get Jack's ideas around this prehistoric migration to interior lands, and changes in latitude/light/DHA/D3/iodine/grounding shift of brain mitochondrial function support issues. Thanks both of you!

All this infomaiton about DHA and mineral deficiencies seems to be restricted to the context of populations consuming grain and potato heavy diets, and therefore would require very nutritionally rich foods to compensate. Surely, meat focused diets don't have this issue. I consume seafood whenever I feel like it. Maybe once every few weeks I'll splurge on some oysters, or make some salmon sashimi. Do you think someone eating an animal based diet needs to be concerned about the overall DHA content of their diet? Or will the trace amounts found in all the fat they tend to consume add up to be sufficient?

@@Thebusysuperhuman - DHA is also found in many foods that are pasture-raised or wild-caught, which describes most of what I eat. Also, the eggs I buy are supposedly higher in omega-3s, although I don't know how much DHA that gives me. I do eat seafood on occasion, but I wonder how much DHA I'm already getting even excluding seafood. As far as I know, there has never been a study done on the DHA levels and their impact on those following an optimally healthy diet: whole foods, organic, low-carb, high-fat, nutrient-dense, animal-based, and nose-to-tail.
