In conversation with Tamala Edwards, anchor, 6abc Action News morning edition
Jonathan Karl is the author of the instant New York Times bestsellers Front Row at the Trump Show and Betrayal, behind-the-scenes accounts of Donald Trump and his allies’ unprecedented actions while in office and the chaotic events that followed the 2020 presidential election. The co-anchor of This Week with George Stephanopolous and chief Washington correspondent for ABC News, he has also covered some of D.C.’s most important beats, including four presidential administrations, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon, and the State Department. Karl was the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association from 2019 to 2020 and has earned the Walter Cronkite Award for National Individual Achievement, an Emmy Award, and the Everett McKinley Dirksen Award, the highest honor for Congressional reporting. Replete with all new reportage, Tired of Winning examines the ways in which Trump has remolded the Republican Party in his own image, the damage he’s left in his wake, and his improbable resurgence.

When it's loyalty to one personality that is the first goose-step. When a cult of personality forms around one person there is danger in the wind. When that cult names that person their "chosen one" and their "messiah" there is danger on the ground and to the rest of humanity.

I remember thinking when I was a young man fascinated with American history especially the history of the US Civil War and our involvement in World War II etc. How could all of the southern states get behind leaving the union, how could all of the German people get behind Adolf Hitler? Now I think how could so many Americans believe that Trump could be a good president in 2016 and possibly again in 2024?
@robertmclaughlin9472
@robertmclaughlin9472 6 ай бұрын
I'm no professional historian so I'm not going even going to try and explain in a sentence or two Hitler's ascension. As for the the Confederacy, while a gross simplification, I think that there's a lot of truth to the southern mindset so wonderfully articulated by Shelby Foote (as featured in the Ken Burns series, "The Civil Wat"). At that time people first and foremost saw allegiance to their state. People back then said the United States "are" but we now say the US "is" without giving it any thought. The Civil War was the rebirth of the nation. The socio-economic upheaval wrought by the Great Depression and WWII went even further in transforming the American mindset. Now with that said, the prospect of Trump 2024 is terrifuckingfying.

I too am dumbfounded by the gullibility of my simple-minded friends & family who still believe the lies & propaganda espoused by trump himself, right wing media & outrageous conspiracy pushing pod casts etc. So much unbelievable nonsense circulates to titillate & perpetuate false narratives to prop up trump as a super hero, answer to prayer...in the name of Jesus. I am a Christ follower myself, but trump's hero worship is false worship! Trump is a liar, a cheat & a dirty rotten scoundrel...by most true accounts. All that being said, l heartily believe "Players Always Get Played" (my own quote) because they play themselves! Thus trump will be the demise of trump!..he will play himself! undermine his own legitimacy & reveal his true fallen character for the world to see in a total humiliating fashion. It will be the ultimate Epic Fail! Mark my words. Vote Blue! 😅🇺🇸

First of all: I'm happy that many American[ian]s acknowledge the danger drumpty-dumpty poses. Although I must say you are just too nice for him. Living in Europe, I can see in from the outside. And to me, he doesn't look naive. Narcissistic & malignant, absolutely, but he knows power when he sees it. And he wants it. And to OWN power, you NEED to have a malicious mind. If not, you use your power for the better good (according to yourself) and it becomes your strength. drumpty-dumpty is not that. He is deliberately nefarious, malicious even. He cozies up to Viktor Órban, the one European leader that turned its democracy into an autocracy. Every autocrat in the book is a good example for him and he wants to be friends with them. Not with democracies, since they are a threat to his power. So he knows what he wants, and it's power. He doesn't know what to do with it or how to get it, but he knows that that's what he wants. That's not naive, that's incredibly dangerous. This image of him being naive and "he says what he means" etc., is his image. His way of getting to power, because it's what he's always done. Does he know that what he is saying is fascist? I think he doesn't care. Like his first wife said: He had a book with Hilter's quotes on his night stand. I think he genuinly doesn't understand the difference between 'good' and 'bad' here, since for him power is good. In whichever way you can get it. But I am pretty sure he knows what he is saying. And understands that if it's the Mussolini-way, then fine, let's take the Mussolini-way. So, he sounds more like someone who deliberately tries to avoid to understand any consequence of his actions, but he is well aware of what he's doing. He just doesn't have that roadmap that people like Putlin have. So he sounds like a whining 5-year old. But he's not. He's 80+.

I could not agree more. As Jon Stewart (former Host of "The Daily Show" has tried to warn his supporters: "He's not PROTECTING you, he's USING you as a SHIELD". I say- There's a reason djt's favorite poem ends with "I TOLD you Im a snake!" I blv djt's ultimate goal I'd to have his own little country to rule over & pass down to offspring, Jung Un style. And that his fans hope & pray for that to come to fruition. I think the S.E. region of USA would be the region he could take over...with cheering fans.

Actually, the story about the people being blocked from leaving Mar-a-lago on the occasion of Trump’s campaign announcement made my hair stand on end. This was not only sad and pathetic, it was something out of North Korea, differing only in degree, rather like the famous exchange between Churchill and socialite seated next to him: Churchill: "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?" Socialite: "My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course... " Churchill: "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?" Socialite: "Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!" Churchill: "Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.”

As Karl puts it, he destroys the norms and protocols of American institution. I am not an American but I have spent time in America having had to work there on several occasions. Those characteristics which Karl identifies are precisely the reasons tens of millions of Americans love Trump. They are a massive section of the American public which are disenfranchised from those institutions. And that is the root of the problem which is eating at the soul of America. Not a good situation in which democratic principles will necessarily yield good results.

Trump's first wife wrote in her autobiography that Trump had two hobbies -- Golfing and repeatedly watching and studying Hitler speeches. She said he was fascinated by how he was able to get so many people to adore him. I think we're seeing a good bit of the same ans similar language from Trump. She wrote her book over 25 years ago -- long before he decided ti run for office.

He becomes a willing tool of people like Bannon and the Project 2025 theocrats because of this tendency. Many people were shocked to hear him quote Hitler last weekend, but he's been doing this for decades. Usually paraphrased slightly, but not more than that Ishi Press International put him on the cover of their 2016 edition of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order. The very book he kept by his bed when he was married to Ivana and quite possibly still. Sounds like he may know it by heart by now. Many more US voters need to spread the word about this and Project 2025 as quickly as they can. You need to help each other prevent a swift descent into theocratic fascism in January 2025, both for your own sake and for the rest of us around the world.

To the gentleman's question about what's the difference between Americans who want to elect Trump and the Germans who wanted Hitler. The answer is there is no difference. Let explain what I mean by that. When as a young boy I learned about WW2 and the Nazi's. I thought those people were evil and I'm glad to live in America where people aren't evil. Fast forward to 2003 and I'm in a discussion on a web bulletin board and somenone posted a picture of an SS prison guard at home with his kids opening Christmas presents. Another person commented how "normal" they looked. I had to respond that they looked normal because they were normal people but they were doing evil things. That is the most important thing to understand about the Holocaust and why it needs to be taught to children. A fascist type of leadership is always a threat to any democracy it can and will happen if you don't see and stop it before it siezes power. It's happened to Russia and we are dangerously close to it happening here in the U.S.

Failed justice system no matter the outcome of the subject's verdict and sentence. Nobody should be afforded the amount of leeway to destroy democracy the way the subject has. The fact the SCOTUS is as criminal as they are may be a stronger example. Any solution requires an overwhelming reconstruction and if any party in this limited system of options we have, is not the one that begins with the letter R.

@@lynnebucher6537 Thanks for looking ! I wasn't able to find it months ago....It is remarkably comprehensive, tracing the roots of MAGA back to how Nixon wooed the Dixiecrats in the deep south who were hatefully well represented by Alabama gov George Wallace ( Who ran as an independent as well as a Dem ) champion 🏆 of the old CSA ( Confederate States of America) who NEVER wanted to face the fact that they lost the Civil War.Nixon successfully got disgruntled Dixiecrats to vote GOP & won a narrow victory ( 3% ) over Hubert Humphrey in 1968 .Once in office Nixon used the FBI / CIA & other dirty tricksters to ruin all his rivals for the next election ( 1972 ) & went on to the greatest state tally in history ( have to check # s ) FORTY NINE OUT OF FIFTY STATES ‼️‼️ As soon as he was reelected he began making plans to change the Constitutional 2 term limit So he could stay in power for ... 4 more, 4 more for ever ....reminds me of a couple fellows we know ......

That was a great quote disparaging Trump from an unnamed person who worked in his administration. That quote is not different from anonymous quotes while Trump was in office as well as quotes after the fact from sources who permit their names to be used. Those quotes do provide insight, but I wonder if all these remarks had been published with by-name attribution they might have turned some of the Trump base and donors against Trump when it could have made a difference.

I seriously doubt that bc remember; The vast majority of Republican politicians/admin or adjacent openly & very publically shared their disdain twd djt, incldg Kayliegh MacEneny, Ted Cruz & many MANY others...UNTIL there were SO MANY MILLIONS of USA voters that made it more than clear that they wanted NONE OTHER THAN TRUMP, that they decided- (paraphrase) "Hmmm..welp!- the people have spoken. So if I want to stay in Republican Politics, I guess I better get on board. Maybe he'll adapt". After watching/hearing Rachel Maddow's ",PREQUEL" I realize the ASTONISHING fact that there have ALWAYS been millions of Americans, incldg Congressmen, who have desperately & fervently WANTED a dictator, like Hitler, to rule over them & the entire country, with a cruel, iron fist. Well, I shouldn't say ALWAYS, bc Idk that FOR SURE, but, for sure, since as far back as when Hitler started up with his regime. Truman was a supporter of Nazi's, as well. There were mass parades & all sorts of events in support of Hitler here in USA. Very SURREAL.
