One thing I always liked about Eric is how he's a mix of his parents. He has Red's cutting attitude and sharp tongue but it's tempered by Kitty's sweetness.

It's funny because both Red and Kitty are right in their own way, Red is right that the world isn't going to coddle Eric later if he coddles him now, but Kitty is right is when you over-discipline your kids, you just make kids who get really good at sneaking around you.

In 4th grade there were 2 brothers my age who were completely whacked. Neighbors. Our family had dinner over there one night. Only time ever. The Dad would make them stand at attention, make them call him Sir and just embarrass them in front of people in an effort to "discipline" them. It was a very quiet dinner. Red is always hard on Eric and Kitty is always sympathetic for her baby boy. The roles are reversed when it comes to Laurie where Kitty is always the disciplinarian and Red is sympathetic to his little girl. This dynamic is played out in That 90’s Show with their granddaughter where Red is always sweet and protective of Leia. If Leia acts up like Laurie Kitty will most likely be the disciplinarian. Eric and Donna are more hands on and caring with their daughter than their parents. But Eric is more likely to threaten to put a foot in her ass if she steps out of line. It is an interesting character dynamic.

The big trick here is people who believe life isn't simply handed to them live in fear and go on to exploit and crush others, thereby creating the conditions they were afraid of. But the reality is that human beings have always trended towards cooperation and while you have to work at that, it's nowhere as dire as the former scenario. Being compassionate and resilient makes life better for everyone.

Discipline is good, but you still need a certain degree of freedom to both have fun, and make your own mistakes and learn from them. Too much discipline and you either end up with a child without any impulses to control - directionless, anxious, always just following orders, or a child who loses it the moment they leave home due to the sudden absence of discipline and the rush of now being able to do ANYTHING - they didn't learn impulse control, they learned that mum and dad wouldn't let them experience anything and now they had to make up for lost time.

There's a balance to be struck in effective parenting. Be strict with fair & porportional discipline when they veer off the path that they should be on. Also Jesus's forgiveness was speaking of our enemies and transgressors, not our own children.

My dad never taught me anything, he never grounded me, took care of me or disciplined me in any way, he was just there, like a roomate. When i was 11 he took 50 bucks out of my savings because he was out of change He lost my brother in a huge city when he was 6 Reckless driving almost got us killed a few times throughout childhood Every single time i brought friends home he embarrased me, i remember one of my first birthday party when i was 9, 2 girls i invited were changing upstairs and he walked on them naked, first time i invited a girl home to "study" , the first comment she made after we left the house was "was your dad high ?" He ruined my mom, if they never met she'd be happy and successful, when i learn about the things he did to her over the years i'm just angry, he made it financially impossible for her to leave him, he lost our house by doing business behind her back, he's just a parasite living off her labour. I grew up sad, i'm a mess now and the only things i know, i know them from my mom. I remember watching the show when i was young, i always thought Red was a cool dad, sure he's mean sometimes but he means well, at least he's here for his kids. Any style of parenting is better than no parenting at all.

I think this is about 50% correct. Red is clearly an authoritarian parent, however Kitty is not authoritative, she is permissive. Authoritarian and Authoritative approaches both demand the exercise of rules, structure and authority, but how those are executed are different. The authoritarian doesn't feel the need to explain or justify his or her rules, it's either you do it or you get punished. The authoritative parent does justify their rules, and explains why they are doing what they're doing.

Red is right. Firm boundaries are important, especially in teen years. My parents imposed strict limits and STUCK to them, and I really appreciate it today. But that's the most important part, and one that many parents have trouble with: it's not enough to create limits. You have to constantly maintain that limit and NOT deviate from it.

The ones who didn't want to break any rules had good relationships with their parents and saw eye to eye with them on why their parents didn't want them doing certain things, or because they respected and loved those parents and didn't want to disappoint. ...Y'know...in some sick twisted way, I can actually see Red's point. By making your kids miserable while they're growing up, it destroys any notion of them having unrealistic expectations of what life will be like as an adult...which is basically more misery and less time to complain about it. But still, I don't think it's a _parent's place_ to do that. A parent should be one of the few bastions of trust and comfort that a kid has in the entire world to go to. It's the School and everyone that's in it that's going to make your kids miserable. The day-in-day-out monotony of doing the same repetitive tasks over and over for little-to-no reward, and the ever encroaching fear that each year will be worse than the last, until they finally hit graduation...and then the _real hard part begins._ Not to mention meeting all the social expectations being there, when most kids would just like to be left alone! Heck, if you truly want to break the unrealistic expectations, then school shouldn't have as many breaks and holidays as it does. Surely that won't drastically impact mental health. The simple fact is...everyone is going to be miserable because _life is miserable._ We're all doomed to go from one stage of life's-treadmill to the next until we drop dead from exhaustion... But if you go out of your way to be the _cause_ of your child's misery...You're either going to get two things; you're going to get a bitter adult who wants nothing to do with you and probably wrote a tell-all book about you, making money off the misery you caused and probably landing you in jail...Or you lose a child entirely.

No Red and Mr. Perry are both authoritarians, unless the subject is Laurie. The only reason Eric hasn't killed himself is because he lives in a co-parenting household. Unlike Mrs. Perry who doesn't make decisions when it comes to her family, Kitty can reign her husband in and is so open that every in the gang comes to her for advice. But she's not permissive, she has a line and everyone realizes when how much they've screwed up when they cross it. Whether she let's Red do the punishing, she does the punishing, tries to weaponize Red's authoritarian nature against the gang. Like Kitty's the one you don't cross

Rotimi Johnson exactly!!! I love how people don't understand the clear cut irony the writers slipped in. "In order for him to be happy and adjusted later in life, he needs to be miserable now". That doesn't make any sense! Real parents teach their kids how to handle challenges, and teach them that they're not entitled to ANYTHING in this world. They show them HOW to work hard, accept criticism and learn from their mistakes. But then again, when half of the full-grown adults in this country don't want to work hard, accept criticism and learn from their mistakes, how are they supposed to teach those skills to their children? I think just a simple lack of any kind of real parenting is why this next generation is so fucked up.
