Today my aunt and one cousin told me that I act autistic, because they saw me getting overly excited over my current obsession. I've been meaning to get diagnosed since about 7 months ago lol

Nothing is wrong with telling a neurodivergent person to take accountability sometimes. We're neurodivergent, not babies. We have some control over our actions.

It's the opposite for me, I've always had strong opinions and most of my life I've voiced them, even though I know there'll be backlash. I'm already alone, what's the damage? Also, it baffles me how people are so afraid to oppose our bosses or tell what bothers them or that the boss hasn't thought something through. I do that all the time and haven't even had a warning, and I'm not treated badly afterwards, I don't know what my collagues are so afraid of.

Are you telling me that it's not typical to spend most of your memory remembering to remember
@SpecialInterestShow
@SpecialInterestShow 2 жыл бұрын
And then you remember that you were supposed to remember SOMETHING, but you can't remember WHAT you wanted to remember. So basically you just know you absolutely forgot something but have NO IDEA WHAT! It's the worst lol it can happen in the span of like 2 minutes to me

I think that tiktok is a really bad mis-characterization tbh .. for a whole number of reasons. For one, the ability to remember something is explicit long-term memory, and not related to working memory (or short term memory). Short term memory is the ability to hold new information for a short time. Working memory is the memory needed for elementary processing, eg doing a calculation in your head or understanding a series of words as a sentence with a statement or question. Explicit long term memory is the ability to remember something consciously. Implicit memory is the ability to remember something subconsciously. People with autism (savants not included) usually have an average working memory and short-term memory and loong-term memory (implicit and explicit). People with ADHD have a below-average working memory and explicit long-term memory, but an above-average short-term memory and above average implicit memory. For two, I don't know why she frames this as something of a "theory". The first thing you learn in therapy with ADHD is to set alarms and reminders, make sticky notes, shopping lists etc. because these memory limitations are well known, and you don't need to remember to remember, if you make a note of _what_ you want to remember. For three, it's not a 'neurodivergent thing'. Things like depression and burnout, and your overall emotional status, have wayyy more impact on your ability to remember than having ADHD.

@@SpecialInterestShow Absolutely. My point is, when she (in the video) says "neurodivergent brains do this", she makes it sound like all neurodivergent brains do this. At the same time, she minimizes the fact that there is plenty of neurotypical brains that do this because of, for example, depression or burnout or pregnancy, or on account of simply being born like that. "Neurotypical" and "neurodivergent" are collective terms and each apply to a wide range of people and traits. If you take a trait that exists in multiple groups but assign it to only one group - that's how stereotypes are created. And as I said .. she mistook working memory for explicit long-term memory - and I tried to clear that up.

ok so i came here just so i could say this. ive been questioning autism for about two years know but never told anyone afraid of backlash and i didnt wanna self diagnos. like 2 months ago my therapist (i dont like) said to my mom she might have autism you should get her tested. so the next meeting i mentioned it and was like yeah ive done research i might and she was like but why?.... me being me just shut up, froze and didnt answer. she nor my mom have brung it up again and im scred to ask i already get yelled at enough. but now i am self diagnosing i know i have autism. in that situaation is it ok with me self diagnosing?
@gabeangel8104
@gabeangel8104 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people with autism aren’t able to access official testing until older (sometimes a lot older) or maybe at all for many reasons. Although self diagnosis is a controversial thing in general, some people feel that, so long as your self diagnosis is based on a solid reasoning and information rather than just something like watching a few videos online or something (and your reasoning seems good), then it should be accepted. It’s also important why a person is self diagnosing. I think more people would think that a self diagnosis is valid if your intention is to understand yourself more and to learn about autism related things that could improve your quality of life, for example, whereas people are less likely to think a self diagnosis is valid if a person uses it in order to get away with things and get attention and stuff like that. I don’t think that is your intention though from what you’ve said. It’s obviously best to get officially diagnosed whenever possible, so if your mum and therapist are more open in the future or if there’s someone else who may be able to help you, for example at school or something, then it would be good to take that opportunity. Alternatively, you may have to accept self diagnosis for now but have an opportunity to access testing when you are older and your parents are no longer the ones making your medical decisions. You will come up against people who will oppose self diagnosis. You won’t be able to convince everyone that you aren’t making it up or to see that it’s possible to know that you have a condition but be unable to access the resources that would give you the official diagnosis. You will find people who are accepting and supportive though too. I’m sorry that you don’t feel that you have the support from your therapist or your mum that you need. I very much relate to shutting down when asked things. It was my biggest obstacle when I had therapy too, as well as in most other situations where it really mattered/matters to say something lol.

Quick answer. No. Being nervous isn't a reason for anything. At least look up and read the official DSM-V diagnostics for ASD and see if you fit them. Don't try to force yourself into them either, be genuine with it. Also, check out some actually neurodivergent channels for help with things you struggle with. How to ADHD is pretty great. So is Patrick Teahan.

Btw onlyjayus did make a video and she posted that she did feel horrible for saying things like that and she wished she hadn’t Also the video with the girl asking the guy to do somethings and him handing over a transcript but not doing anything is so relatable, my sister and i do it SO much, like when my mother asks me to put away my plate or tidy my floor i just say yep and keep doing what i am doing, then i get in a whole ton of trouble for not doing it whwn she asked because she apparently asked it a whole ton of times after she first said it but my brain tuned it out because it was going to get to it eventually and it tuned it out because it already knew what to do

And they definitely shouldn't try to illegally self-medicate. But just self-diagnosing as autistic? That's valid
